Symptoms of intestinal blockage in dogs
93Puppies are well known to eat all sorts of things
Owners of dogs with a ''vacuum cleaner'' reputation should be extra careful in recognizing the early signs of intestinal blockages.
The list of objects retrieved from dogs each year is quite impressive and every now and then, even quite surprising. The most commonly found are: coins, bones, sticks, toys, socks, stones, buttons, balls, tampons and marbles.
Symtoms of Intestinal Blockage
The symptoms vary depending on the location of the blockage. The most common factor is the presence of vomiting, loss of appetite an difficulty defecating.
If the blockage is in the esophagus dogs likely be licking thier lips, swallow a lot regurgitate right after being fed (presenting indigested kibble in large pieces and often the vomit is of an oblong tubular shape) and often suffer from dehydration because unable to eat and drink properly. Because they are unable to keep food down, these dogs go down hill pretty quickly.
If the blockage is in the stomach, the pylorus is often blocked, causing the food to not make it through the intestinal tract. Episodes of vomiting therefore usually within a few hours after eating. The most common objects to create blockages in the stomach are large and smooth items such as golf balls, marbles and bones.
If the blockage is in the small intestine it means the object was able to make it through the pylorus but that it is getting stuck in the curvy areas of the small intestine. When this happens, gas accumalates causing the intestine to become distended and eventually the blood supply will be cut off causing the tissues to die. In this case, dogs wil develop vomiting soon after eating, abdominal pain, distended abdomen, fever, shock and even death if left untreated.
If the blockage is downer down the road towards the end of the small intestine, diarrhea is more common, however, vomiting may occur 7-8 hours later post eating.
Diagnosis
Veterinarians will start with a physical and therefore will palpate the dog's abdomen looking for signs of pain and distension. Often, the foreign object may be felt as well during palpation.
Treatment
If the foreign object was injested less than two hours ago, and the object is safe to bring back up, veterinarians may recommend to induce vomiting with 3% hydrogen peroxide. In some cases, if this does not work, the vet may administer more effective medications to induce vomiting.
if this does not work, the object can be retrieved with an endoscope armed with utensils made for grasping the object. This is helpful if the object is still in the stomach and if it easy to grasp. An x-ray will likely confirm the blockage but in some cases, like in objects made of plastic more reliable methods such as Barium tests are needed
Once the object has made its way through the pylorus and the small intestine, surgery is needed.
If there is necrosis (tissue death) of some parts of the intestine they need to be removed along with the foreign object and the two ends of the intestinal tract will need to be sutured back together.
Prognosis
Prognosis varies depending on the severity of the obstruction and the presence of complicating factors such as necrosis or peritonitis. Usually, most pets recover fine. However, post surgery, dogs must be monitored for any signs of leakage from the intestinal tract. Fever and abdominal pain should be reported to the vet immediately. A liquid diet is provided in the first days and then gradually mushy, soft foods are given until the dog is put back on a solid diet.
The dog may wear an Elizabethan collar to prevent him from chewing on his stitches.
How to Prevent Intestinal Blockages:
-Keep an eagle eye on your pet, it takes only seconds for them to wolf down a toy while you are turning your back. .
-Never give bones (especially rawhide) or unsafe toys to dogs with a vacuum cleaner reputation.
-Always make sure toys are larger than the dog's throat, therefore impossible to swallow.
My dog swallowed a bone what to do?
This is something quite common. You look away from the table one second only to discover your dog getting into your chicken wings, As soon as you chase your dog, he swallows it whole. What to do in this case?
Cooked bones unlike raw bones are more likely to splinter. It helps to give some bread that will wrap around the bone hopefully protecting the stomach and intestinal lining.
All that remains to do in most cases, is just give it a wait and see approach.
Dogs that begin to appear listless, not interested in food, that start vomiting, have abdominal pain, bloody or tarry stools, strain to pass stools or just do not act normal, should be seen by the vet immediately.
The Most Dangerous Items Ingested
-Pennies
Pennies often are cause of intestinal obstruction in dogs but they also may cause zinc toxicity if they were minted after 1982.
-Strings
A string may appear like an innocent objects but often once in the intestinal tract the waves of movement from the intestines will cause the intestine to bunch up like an accordion. As the string gets tighter, it may eventually cut through the intestines.
-Alkaline Batteries
These if punctured by the teeth will release acids that may corrode the dog's throat and stomach. Dogs that have ingested alkaline batteries should not be induced to vomit as its contents are corrosive and cause more harm bringing them back up. Consult with a vet promptly or call poison control.
-Sharp Objects
Oddly, sometimes sharp objects pass uneventfully, because the intestinal tract ''detects'' their sharpness and does not spasm around them as it does with smoother objects. Should your dog swallow something sharp, it is best to give some bread as this will often ''cocoon'' around the object allowing it to possibly and hopefully to pass without much damage.
- How and when to induce vomiting in your dog
A time may come when we find out too late that our puppy or dog has ingested something potentially harmful or even poisonous requiring treatment at once. There are are a few things that can be done at home...

My dog has a terrible habit of eatting baby socks . We realized this when he passed the first one in his stool ,and we had looked for the sock for ages.
After that I took the socks off the children when they came to my house to be babysat, but he still managed to get a few.
We always knew right away and made him throw it up successfully.
We thought this was thing of the past until a teenage friend of my daughter cam eover and put her socks in her sneakers. WHen she went to leave there was only one sock .
I knew it had to be the dog but for some unknown reason didn't make him throw up.
Vacation started and we promptly forgot about the sock.Over a month later the dog threw it up. Whole and unchewed, just as it went down.
How is this possible????
I felt so awful ,that something life threatening could have happened to my dog .
Any answers ???
We've had our share of Hoovers, or as we call them billygoats, among our dogs. Years ago our Trixie swallowed a wooden clothes pin and we were lucky it didn't get stuck. After we gave her lots of bread she finally barfed it back up. She also loved chewing the small red ball that comes with a jacks set and nearly swallowed that too.
Others would rip the jacket off tennis balls and eat that.
The rawhide thing is something most people don't see as hazardous but it is.
Thanks for posting this article with warning symptoms for intestinal blockage. This information will help determine if there's a serious issue that needs the vet's attention.
Great Hub, thanks for the information. My dog occasionally gets to something on our walks before I can see it.
My vet is not giving my dog food or water and it has been 3 days!!! IS THIS NORMAL!!! He went in with vomiting and diarrehea and she will not give him any water!!! I notified her that my dog may have a blockage from rawhide bone (which I will never give him again) and she said he must go an entire 24 hours without throwing up. UGH!!! My dog is a schnoodle 13 pounds!! He is also a newly 3 months rescued dog from starvation! She explained no water to prevent more throwing up and stomach inflamation but isn't a gradual giving of water better than nothing??? I AM AT MY WITTS END and am thinking of pulling him from the vet if someone can explain this to me... It has been 3 days I do not want him to Die.. please.. someone give me some awnsers as she does not think it is a blockage but even still virus or not whatever he may have.. NO FOOD!! NO WATER!!! FOR 3 DAYS NOW and COUNTING...
Our dog ate a pispatio nut that obstructed his intestinal tract. The vet was able to perform surgery and milk it out.
Our King Charles had surgery Fri. 1-15, 2010. He swallowed an acorn!! We had no idea he even had access to one. Must have found it in the grass on our evening walk (too dark for us to see if he gets something in his mouth) He had thrown up over 15 times Friday before we took him to vet. She suggested an xray and when she showed it to me she said it looks like a very large tumor. ( obstruction was not visible) Of course we thought that was the end of our little baby because the "tumor" took up almost all of stomach area. So he was taken into surgery within 2 hours of our arival. I was called with the great news that it was a large acorn blocking passage, therefore the "tumor" was only a large amount of fluid in his stomach. We saw him today and he had thrown up after surgery and not eating yet but they say that is normal. Hope to bring him home Monday morning.
Our Doberman "Jenna" is now 6 years old. We rescued her at the age of 2 and she has always been a ravenous eater and definitely has the vacuum cleaner reputation. We never give her stuffed toys because she will tear it apart and eat the stuffing. She only gets squeaky toys.
Thanks for the excellent article.
very informative thanks
My cavalier ate a bunch of chicken wings yesterday. We took him to the vet, they made him throw up and then took an X ray. It showed that some was still there. He said to take him in again this morning for X rays, but I don't see the point yet. There isn't anything wrong yet. I don't want to operate if he may pass them. The vet said if it wasn't for our concern for money he would operate yesterday, but he isn't showing any signs at all of distress. Yes, there are still bones in his stomach, but we knew that since he ate them. What are your thoughts? I called another vet and they said wait and see if a better approach.
My airedale is a hoover and eats and countersurfs all the time. He ate a large ham bone last month and we also did the xrays etc asap. To avoid the surgery, we did the wait option and gave him carafate (prescription) then I fed him rice and mashed potatoes with water for one-two days. He showed no signs of obstruction and did great. However, he just ate a tampon the other day and I'm back with the diarrhea, no vomiting and he is not listless. He plays etc so I'm 'waiting' again! He's back on pepto bismal and he likes it. So that should tell you something.
My small dog got into the garbage and ate a tampon. The obstruction caused her to vomit for two days. Her belly was huge. She was x- rayed and the vet determined that she needed surgery. He let me take her home and said to bring her back first thing in the morning.
Then I went home and began researching online about instestinal blockage in dogs. I was told I could feed my dog before midnight. E How said a holistic remedy was to give your dog one to two tablespoons of canned pumpkin. She had not pooped in two and a half days. Finally, on the third day she passed the pumpkin on the third day. Two tablespoons of pumpkin saved my dog from surgery. Thank you E How.
My dog is laying on the couch next to me so motionless and lethargic that I'm checking his breathing every now and then. I am the one to blame as I gave him a rib bone 2 days earlier after a tiring 7-hour drive as a treat. Usually it takes him some time to chew up a bone, but this time he finished it surprisingly fast. In about 2 hours he demanded to be walked and had a diarrhea. It was a Sunday night, the end of a holiday weekend. He woke us up 4 or 5 times that night asking to be walked. Every time - diarrhea. I thought maybe he had some rotten food, or caught a stomach flew out on a farm we were visiting that day, or anything else - diarrhea happens, nothing to worry about.
But there was, as he started throwing up Monday morning, around 12 hours after we got home Sunday night. There were so many variables to the causes of his sickness - traveling, eating junk food in the car - literally, eating spoiled food, the farm horses giving him a bug - i mean it could be anything. He spent the whole day vomiting and having diarrhea. I decided to take him to the vet if the situation wouldn't change in 24 hours.
On Tuesday morning he vomited with blood and that's when I took him to the vet. Everything they were saying and doing did not make sense to me. Putting a dog on IV? Getting an x-ray? He had a 100 of these bones before and everything was fine before. And they said - it only takes once.
The dog spent the day at the vet's - they put in IV, gave him anti vomiting and stomach-coating medications, tried feeding him but he refused.
Now that i'm reading up on bones stuck in intestines - all the visible signs are there. Diarrhea, vomitting with blood, refusing to eat. He has gas in his stomach, but the blood work came out all good. If I have read this yesterday when he still was eating maybe i could do the cotton ball remedy. Now i offer him his favorite snacks - greenies and cheese and he's refusing. I see so much pain in his eyes as i know he probably wants it so much, but can't eat it. So upsetting to look at :(
As they said at the vet, they'll put him back on IV tomorrow morning and if he's still not eating they'll do an extensive x-ray with coloring liquid that would show things clearer. What if they find a bone in the intestines - surgery is the only option then? What if they don't find anything and can't figure out the cause of this?
I'm a nerve rack :(
I woke up to a mess of vomit and bloody diarrhea. I completely freaked out my dog was laying on the couch with me at 11 pm last night and was fine. I have a 5 poung toy schnoodle who is always in everything. We actually had to get him a baby gate to keep him in on place while we are not able to watch him carefully. So we were at the vet as soon as they opened this morning. They think he might have an obstuction but are unsure. They said they will do everything they can to help him but he is very sick. He had a high fever, not moving and cannot stand, and when they palpatated his intestinal area he started vomiting all over.
They just swept him up to the back and told me they would call in an hour. What is the prognosis? Can they make a full recovery from that condition? My kids are devastated.
Thank you Alexa for your help and support!
The vet did everything you said they would. The dog spent two days on IV and finally ate today a special super-appetizing food. His stomach is still loose, but no more blood!! They're keeping the catheter in the vein in case he needs more meds via IV, but it looks like he'll be just fine!!! :)))
i am so sad my little minature cav ways 5 kgs and has been sick since sunday took her to vets on monday they sent us home and said if shes not better in 48 hrs come back which i did. she was addmitted and i was told that no obstruction showed on xray but i rang this morning and they had to do emergancy op to remove obstruction and part of intestine. next 48 hours to wait and see if she recovers i am so sad and worried
My terrier mix Scruffy eats odd things, he has had three used tampons, ew, and the worst item came out at the park. I saw he was having trouble taking a poop and I thought when I saw it dangling from his butt that it was hair stuck up there and I gently tried to help it out. As I pulled it kept getting longer and longer. It looked like intestines or something. I started to freak, he was trying to get away from me and now it was hanging out about eight inches. I kept pulling and after about five more inches of fece covered tubular like thing came out I realized that it was a nylon knee high. I was relieved it wasn't anything else, but OMG he could have died from an intestinal blockage.
I spent the night watching for signs that he was dehydrated or had an intestinal blockage because he has thrown up four times in the past fourteen hours. He has been drinking and eating normal, but he has thrown up everything that has gone in. No fever, he was chipper as usual and it is hard to tell what he has going on. I am about to take him to the vet after reading how quickly they can go down hill if it is a blockage. Thanks for the info, I will let you know how it turns out.
Great article!
I wonder if you could expand a bit more on the rawhide debate? I've read so many conflicting reviews - some saying it promotes healthy chewing and jaw actions and it safe, others saying it can be really dangerous. I'd be grateful of your opinion.
One of my giant breed dogs is a hooverer. We he was young he swalllowed, almost whole, a rawhide stick and we had several agonising days waiting to see if it would cause a blockage. I did call the vet on that occassion and he told me that his stomach acids would likely break it down. Luckily he was fine.
Is rawhide safe in any form?
I have an old Bichon, he's 19 now, and to old for any kind of surgery. This past week he's had one episode of bloody stool, several loosish stools, and he is whining as though in pain at least once a day, and I've identified that it seems to be within an hour or so of him having a bowel movement. And his stomach does get distended, real tight, but when I press around on his stomach I don't get a pain reaction from him.
You think he might have a small intestine blockage? His appetite is still good, he feels warm, but no temp, and I think that's inflammation from another bout with allergies. He hasn't thrown up that I've noticed, and I'm with him most of the time as he is so old.
Besides surgery, do you think this necrosis or other things that lead to death can be headed off with any other treatment?
My German Shepherd had diarrhea that started on Friday morning, She is very happy and energetic, eats really well, drinks water, but she has problems pooping... nothing really comes out, or very little kind of a paste. Should I worry? Can she be constipated? or maybe she has something stuck? she is not vomiting or feeling sick.
My 18 month old English Bulldog swallowed a whole rib bone on Sat. afternoon. I called several different vets and they all said the same thing.. Wait and see. She has been eating, drinking, and playing just as she always has and hasn't had any problems going to the bathroom. Most people are optimistic that the bone will pass without any problems but I am just curious as to how long after swallowing the bone do dogs generally either pass the bone or start feeling sick? Anyone have any ideas? advice? Thanks!!
Hi this really is a fantastic hub.
I have two chocolate labradors, they take hoovering to a whole new level. They manage to find stuff that isn't there too find. On two occassions my youngest has either ate something or lot's of little things and ended up with gas in his lower intestine, all of the symptoms you describe were there. Off to the vet he went, emergency operation and two days in doggy hospital. Three months later exactly the same thing again. He is all fine now but we really have to be careful with him, he doesn't seem to associate picking up rubbish with a sore tummy.
As the owner of a 'vacuum cleaner' dog, I have to say this article was very interesting. She's so fast swallowing something when we're out and about I sometimes spend days worrying what it was and whether she'll be okay. Now I know the symptoms to look for I feel a bit more at ease. Though I really should put in the effort to teach her not to eat anything outside...
My 2 yr old pug just came home from the vet. She had surgery to remove a partial sock that had stretched from her stomach through the intestine. We had no idea she had even consumed this. Cost of the surgery was $2300. However her stay at the vet for the 2 days proceeding and 4 days following ran us another $3100. We ddn't have insurance. We had absolutely no idea surgery and recovery could run this high. The vet surgery quote was $1500 to $2300. He had not warned us that the costs could run this high so we had no recourse but to pay. $5400 later and we're still not out of the woods. Take care of your Hoover. I wish I had been more careful.
To keep a dog from counter surfing (and getting in the garbage) I use mouse traps. I set them on the counter and hide them under a little trash (fastfood wrappers usually) and then let the dog discover his own punishment. This way they get a loud noise, movement, and sometimes an unpleasant smack on the nose. The bonus is that it's not associated with me having to be there so there's none of the Dr. Jeckle best behavior when I'm there and Mr. Hyde when I'm not.
My Lhasa Apso 4 years old started throwing up and took her to the vet they thought it was because I fed her table scraps 2 days before and had a case of pancreatitis after 3 days she was getting worse so brought her back to vet and she had a x-ray. They recommended surgery since they saw an obstruction and she swallowed a womens thong underwear that she found on the floor of my daughters room and it made it into her intestinal tract. She would have died without this surgery Im thinking of getting pet insurance incase a expensive thing like this comes up again .It cost over one thousand dollars !!Pet owners beware of items on floors you never know what dogs will ingest.
6 mo beagle at vet now waiting for surgery to fix intestinal blockage. no clue what he ate yet and this article was helpful even post this issue. never had a dog with this issue before in all my dogs so bit unsure what the recovery is like. will he be up and mobile etc.. following the 2-3 days in the animal hospital.
My 14 month bulldog is in the hospital right now waiting for his second x-ray. We were at a friends BBQ and I have no idea what he ate (suspect carrots as there were chunks being vomited up). He was fine all that night, a little lazy for his morning routine but when I came home from work it was bad. Vomited twice, diarrhea twice outside and expelled all water I tried to give him. Off to vet and xray shows something just past stomach. I'm at home waiting for call and am a total wreck.
Anyone have advice on English Bulldog surgery? I've read to make sure ACE (Acepromazine) isn't used as the sedative and a trach tube is used (which I remember the vet saying they do). Anything inspiring will help too :)
These are horrible but good reads...cross your fingers for my little guy.
HI. My "labradoodle" (part toy poodle, part white lab) recently chewed up and ate my hard plastic (NOT metal) retainers on Monday, August 9. The next day we came home to yellow bile throw up on the floor. She threw up a couple more times that day, then once the next day, (august 11th) and her throw up contained 3 small peices of my plastic retainer. She hasn't thrown up since...(it's the 13th today) BUT she has had diarrhea & VERY smelly flatulence! We've checked her diarrhea and there's no signs of plastic! How long does it take to digest them? There's no signs of blood, distress, lethargic-ness...yet I'm still very worried. Do you think she will eventually pass it? We called the vet monday and they said just to watch her. She's been fine besides the diarrhea and flatulence...I am so worried. And now I have to pay $300 dollars for new retainer molds. Once my dad swollowed something metal and it took him 10 days to pass it...maybe it's the same with dogs and plastic. My parents think she will eventually pass it but I'm worried. Any advice?
oh and PLEASE reply asap...
Thank you for your time! :)
Oh no sorry today is the 13th and it's only been in her for around 4 nights...
My 9 month old Coton/Poodle mix became very lethargic two days ago. He went from a high level of activity to laying in his own pee. We took him to the vet and they x-rayed, ultrasound, bloodwork, parasites, all were negative. No vomiting or diarhea. No blood or pus in the urine or stool. The only sign is his heart rate is a little low. He tested negative for heartworm. The vet is completely stumped. The only thing I can think of is an obstruction. Nothing shows up on Xray or ultrasound. He did have some rawhide the day before. He eats everything but no chemicals or drugs he could have gotten into. Any ideas?
My dog is a scavenger. A few weeks ago my dog starting vomiting (more of a spit up) every now and then in the morning on the days that we would sleep in. I assumed it was because of the hotter than normal temperatures, however after further research I discovered that some dogs have a higher than normal amount of acid in their stomachs and may need to be fed more frequently. This reasoning made sense because I was increasing the time between his meals on the weekends. A couple of weeks ago he threw up a 2 inch piece of corn on the cob. Not to be gross but it was quite brown and it smelled... anyways since then his energy level returned to normal. The issue was that the last time I had corn on the cob was almost a month before, however I know I dropped the garbage and he must have gotten a some corn cob before I could clean it all up. He had been perfect since then until this morning. This morning 2 more pieces of cob were thrown up, both about the same size as the first if not bigger. I am wondering if it would be possible for the cob to sit in his stomach for almost a month and a half?? They definitely look like they were... ugh. My dog is only ever unattended in our back garden so the only other explanation would be that someone is feeding him the cobs.
Hi,
my 7 month old Border Collie was very legarthic when I came home 2 days ago. We took him to the ER vet and they took x-rays. They saw a blockage on his stomach/small intestine area. No vomiting, diarrhea, no stool. After 2 days he still hasn't pooped, no vomit, diarrhea, no stool either and he is still lethargic. The second x-ray didn't show the blockage anymore. They gave him barium containing food and the third x-ray after 1 hour showed slow movement of the barium.
Please help. My puppy is not getting better.
thanks
I have a chocolate lab, who puts a whole new meaning to the word "hoover". I have had Labs my whole life and raised other breeds of dogs. I have have showed dogs, trained dogs, groomed dogs, and NEVER in my life have I ever met a dog who will eat the things this 10 month old puppy tries to eat. Now that being said.....he has been fine all day today. I not have noticed any objects come up missing. I have kept a very close eye on him ( I have only had him about 2 weeks ). Now tonight he went outside to poop. All seemed normal...he is running across the yard chasing the cats....then he turns his circle to squat and he lets out a cry like something jumped up and bit him. Now from this moment on it is quite clear that something has him stopped up. He is eating, drinking, no vomiting, no diahirra. No other signs other than from that single moment he seemed to be in pain. Now it is 1am and that was only 2 hours ago. what do I do? Should I wait and see what happens? I offered him pumkin, he gobbled it right up. I offered him water he took it happily...hasnt thrown anything up. But he is suddenly not his normal bouncy crazy self.
Hello my 10 week old German shepherd X Rottie pup got into a left over plate that was on our deck two days ago. he swallowed a few pork rib bones. The smaller bones. He's been eating and drinking fine. I seen him go poop today. He seemed fine. He's playfully like he usualy is. Just seems fine all around. But I'm still worrying. Cuz I was readiing about blockages and what not. Should I be worried? This happened a few days ago and he's doing fine. I am still watching him tho for any unusual sighns. He Is an outside dog. My father in law won't let him in side now that he's a bit older. I just need some answers please..
my valley bulldog ate 2 spare rib bones, it was 48 hrs ago...he seems fine so far, is there anything i should do???
My dog appeared to have gotten an ear of corn and ate it. He has thrown it up and since then he has been throwing up more and it smells horrific. He is so weak and will not eat or drink at all.
Thank you for your advice. My pup is still fine. Showing no sighns of being sick. So should I just stop worrying? I will oveously be
keeping an eye out for any unusual sighns
it's been 4 days now so I would think he's alright. Wouldn't you say so?
Thanx again.
My lab puppie ate part of a nylabone non edible bone yesterday. He seems to be fine, eating, drinking, and acting normal. He did however have a tiny bit of blood in his stool, just on the outside, not mixed within. The vet said to just wait, so should I just keep going about normally as long as he is eating and drinking normally??
My shih tzu us 8 months old and is an active dog. Last Wednesday he threw up twice and ha diarrhea. By friday he didn't want to eat that much. I took him to the vet on saturday and they did xrays blood and fecal exams. The xray show some gas and the vet said that he might ha swallowed something soft because he feels so
Ething but is not a hard object. They gave him 2 shot and iv. The vet called today with the blood results he told me that he has his white cells highs and cell low. I don't have the money for any surgery right now. Is there anything I could do to hep my my dog ay home
He doesn't want to eat but is drinking some water. Please help. My head hurts from crying so much thinking of the worst.
My Doberman ate everything and I took him into get an xray and found a stuff toy in his intestine. The vet bill was $2,600. He then months later bit a person on the elbow and we had to give him to another person. That person now has called to say he's now throwing up again and is very sick, probably from eating something foreign...
Hello, A couple of days ago we noticed our morkie not being herself. She was vomiting do not want to eat or drink anything. Brought her to the vet bloodwork all fine, xray do not show anything so today they done the barium test and it seems they still can't see anything in there but the barium is not leaving her stomach as fast as it should have. So they are going to do a exploratory surgery tomorrow on her. My vet bill is up to $3000 right now. Any sugestions.....
Red and white border collie 500.00, Shipping from Spokan, WA 250.00 having My 15 week old red and white border collie await surgery for a blockage in her small intestine priceless...good thing we caught it in time and good thing I have MasterCard...
My black lab mix ate part of a wool felt toy on Tuesday night. Today is Friday and she still hasn't passed it. She has diahrea with a little blood, but is otherwise normal. What should I do?
Our dog had begun vomiting bile.. and we knew something was wrong. Vet gave us nausea medicine. After another day of not eating, we brought her back to the vet. He diagnosed her with an intersesception, a tangling of the intestines.. which needed emergency surgery. We rushed her to a university vet, and the vet there disagreed with the diagnosis saying he could see a foreign object that definitely needed to be removed. We went through the surgery after putting down $1150 deposit. The foreign object was a WHOLE pecan. And she is a small dachshund. It's been over a week now that she has not eaten, she just had the surgery yesterday and still no appetite at the vet. Can't wait to see the bill...
My 8 month old pit bull is a hoover and for the past couple days has been very quiet and lying around, almost the perfect puppy if not for the fact she's usually getting into so much stuff she makes me want to pull my hair out. has passed very little stool, and today vomited after eating grass. binding from the end of a blanket was balled up in the middle of it. shes still not herself, not eating her food but drinking water and ginger ale. not urinating a lot, but not drinking a lot either. no pain when i press down on her stomach and lower area. could she have a blockage or is she just recovering from the vomiting? how much do xrays usually cost?
My 5 yr old pug threw up his dinner this am. He had some carrots and peanuts(BAD I know) yesterday and I think its making him sick but Im worried. He is very lethargic but unable to get compfy and sleep. Hes also trembling/shivering when he is laying down and the tremble is on the intake of breath. No stomach distension or pain when I touch the belly areas, & had a regular poop, as well as normal temp and gums look healthy. He did this once before with the shaking and went away the next day. He is not eating or drinking and that is worrysome. Anyone have any ideas? Is this just another stomach flu? THANK U!
My mini aussie devoured nylabone pieces 7 days ago (Which her larger brother chewed up and vomited for her!). After a week of gassy diarrhea she vomited 3 meals 4-6 hours after eating. I took her to the emergency vet where she was given Amoxicillin, an anti-vomiting injection, and metronidazole. On x-ray, at least one piece of nylabone is visible in her small intestine. Our vet thinks it is “passing”. Do you have any advice for speeding up passage thru the small intestines? I have only fed her small amounts of food and metronidazole to prevent her from vomiting. My vet told me not to be surprised if she does not pass anything for a few days. I worry that we should do surgery now before the small intestine perforates or becomes infected. Do you think the cotton ball or pumpkin remedy would help at this point?
My 12 year old dog just crunched and ate half of a shark's jaw! OMG! It was a gift from a friend, recently caught and cleaned. She ate the bottom half, probably about 3 inches total, many many razor sharp teeth. I found her with the remainder on the floor. She's a gulper, I'm sure this is going to be terrible. Naturally it's 11 pm, the vet isn't open until tomorrow. I have no idea what to do.
i have a 3 month old yorkie and i think she swallowed a hair clip she is very small about 2 days ago i heard her choking alittle and i went to her and there was all the hair clips all around her she got to them. i freaked out and ran to my mom but she stoped choking this happend about two days ago tomorrow will be three days i called the vet and they told me the symptoms if she did swallow it she has went to the restroom regularly no problem with digesting her food she eats plays no pain when i touch her stomache has not vomitted. so far so good but i am still worried that it will take acouple of more days for the symptoms???...help:(
In the midst of this now. I gave our one-year-old lab a steak bone on Wednesday night. He started vomiting and diarrhea yesterday, vomiting blood last night. Apparently, it's lodged in the small intestine and punctured. Surgery should be starting soon. Poor little guy! I feel horrible because I gave him the bone. Should I start overcooking brown rice to feed him?
My maltese/shih-tzu is little over a year. Two days ago I came home to her having vomited and poop in her cage. Yesterday, she started having diarrhea and eventually diarrhea with blood, but no vomit. This morning, she had diarrea again but not a lot of blood in it. I called her vet and they can't see her till tomorrow. The emergency vet said to just keep her hydrated and feed her a little through out the day. What do you think is causing her diarrhea?
Hi, everyone, my dog is hoover and I keep finding big peices of plastic from toys on her poo. Over the last 12 hours she is leaving her food and treats and keeps puking. I left it over night as she is currently on medication for a an infected dew clew and the meds have recently changed so i thought it may have been related to that, however when she came over for a stroke looking all glum i felt a solid lump just below her rib cage near her stomach under the skin. It felt like it could be gland but could also be a bit of a toy or something she's been chewing on whilst she was getting her walk. This morning I took my dogs out and she was happy to run around and she did pass a poo but the lump is still there.
My 16 month old Doberman POSSIBLY ate a cooked chicken leg 37 hours ago.... Has went potty 4 times since (normal stool), has ate normal, still playful-- active as ever! Should I still be worried, or is she still in danger?!
The bad thing is, I'm not sure if she ate one or not. I forgot to gate off the kitchen, noticed it two minutes later.. and wham, walked in to find her wolfing down a chicken leg! I managed to pull it from her throat, meat and all. I'm not sure how many were in the plate to bein with, as my neighbor had just dropped it off a few minutes before hand.
Thanks!!!
My 2 yr old boston terrier is a vacuum and has had a surgery a few months ago because she ate a happy meal toy. She recently has started eating pine straw and Saturday night she ate a bunch of it and threw up a few times. Now she is barely eating and drinking. She will eat turkey and rice baby food and have some water but its been 3 days of limited intake. Her energy is good and she ate a piece of bread tonight (which we did after reading the above). She doesnt seem to have most symptoms for obstruction except for the loss of appetite. We werent tracking excretion so I am not sure of that. Any suggestions?
My 13 week old German Shepherd puppy recently pooped out shreds of fabric from clothing...underwear, socks, etc.. I hadn't noticed her acting unusual, just saw that her poop was bright and colorful. Then I realized that it was pieces of my clothes she had eaten! I then started looking thru the laundry basket, and found several articles of clothing with pieces missing. She doesn't seem to be acting much different than normal, and I just felt her stomach pretty firmly to check for any discomfort. There were no signs of discomfort, and she just ate about 2 cups of food. However, after examining her stool, there has got to be some clothing left in her because the holes are pretty big. Should I take her to the emergency vet tonight? Or do you think I should wait until my vet opens in the morning? Or do you think I should just monitor her closely for abnormal behavior? I don't want to wait too long and risk losing her, but it seems that several people on this thread have experienced this and made it thru just fine...please help. I am very concerned and don't know what to do at this point.
Thanks in advance!!
our pug swallowed whole a strip of plastic.
it's the piece of paper thin plastic from the top of a bag of cheese (the bit that reveals the sticky resealable section)
it's about 15 cm long, 1 cm wide - soft, flexible and not sharp.
she swallowed this 3 days ago.
i've been checking her stools - and nothing. she has been behaving normally, eating, drinking & pooping regularly and her energy levels are normal.
how long does this plastic take to get our of her? if it's going to cause a blockage, how long before that happens?
do i take her to the vet or just wait until signs to show up?
thank you in advance for your advice.
my dogate a large pork bone its the following day and she's been vomiting also having trouble passing stools .the stools are very hard .she ate her breakfast but brought it up and now all she's vomited is bile. she's now in her bed sleeping 'what should i do !!!
My Shihzhu Bella ate a golf ball sized baked potato and has shown signs of a blockage. She has been vomiting so we took her to the Vet. Had several xrays and ultrasound. Vet sees what could be a remainder portion of potato and has suggested a scope procedure. Are there any other options? She has ups and downs, is hydrated and will play. Not been eating well however. Been 5 days.
Hey my golden-doodle is a known sock digester. He has thrown up 3. He finds them everywhere and swallows quickly. He has been sick for 3 or 4 days. We took him to the vet and the x ray showed nothing. We are taking him to get scoped tomorrow. His stomach isn't bloated he just looks miserable. His stomach is making a good bit of noise. Will someone tell me he is gonna be alright. I am going crazy.
Thanks again guys,
Alex

Hi - I hope some can help me. Its sunday today and where we are we have no emergency vet services.
We have a 5 year old belgian cross. He stopped eating about a week ago and the vet has been in to give him antibiotics and IV fluid. His blood results showed anemia and the vet said that he has tick fever. He must have contracted it when he went missing for a week a few weeks ago. But with all the meds, he isn't getting better.
Last night he vomited and I noticed 3 little rocks in his vomit. I have no idea where that cam from but I suspect that when he went missing, either he was taken and not fed properly or he ate it from somewhere.
I think now he must have some kind of intestinal blockage. We can't take him to the vet until tomorrow morning (its afternoon here in Borneo right now)
His breathing is shallow, his stomach looks distended - he can still drink some water but he refuses to eat anything at all.
Please is there anything at all I can do for him now? I'm afraid that he will die before I can get him to the vet in the morning.
So worried.
Hi! I have a two year pomeranian, who apparently loves inedible things as his delicacy. :( I love him like he's my child. Today's monday. Last thursday he was having some trouble with bowel movements. He had diarrhea. Then on the night of thursday, started throwing up. But his was normal to us, because after he's gotten into tissue or something, he's thrown it up. and he was still acting normal.
friday. he was throwing up greenish/yellowish substance. he wasn't acting himself.. (usually he's hyper and ever energetic) he was sleeping.. being lazy. looking sad. throughout the day, he didn't eat anything or have a bowel movement or pass gas. but he stopped vomiting.
friday night. he vomitted once or twice. still didn't eat. still didn't have a bowel movement. still sad. and seemed to be shaky and crying. but because i catch bus for transportation, i could not bring him to the vet immediately, plus i wouldn't be able to afford the emergency room costs.
saturday morning. he still didn't eat. sad. all the same symptoms. at the first chance, i caught a ride to a VCA clinic with my sisters boyfriend. did a walk in appt. the vet noticed his symptoms. and he noticed his discomfort when he was feeling around his intestines. so he took an xray.in the xray he say some things that concerned him.. possible obstruction.. but he stated that it wasn't conclusive enough to jump straight into surgery. and suggested barriem series(sp?). he informed me it would cost $500 for just the barriem. and i didn't have that money, esp after the 180 xray and 77 office visit.. and the bill coming out to nearly $400 for the visit and whatever he had to get done. so i took him home, hoping to find other sources of money.
later saturday night. my baby didn't seem AS said, but still sad. didn't have much movement. but was more interactive. finally scarfed down a chicken. still no bowel movement. but seemed a little better.
sunday. seemed to have his apetite back. is more active (almost like his oldself). playful. even started barking when i tried to leave his side or when someone came home (first time since thursday). and he has that happy smile on his face again and has been doing more of his old habits. :D but he still hasn't passed anything or had a bowel movement since he ate the first chicken saturday night.. oh but he passes gas.
is he getting better? the fact that he passes gas, does that mean that he doesn't have a blockage? how do i know if he's getting better? I figure that he's not in pain anymore since he got his apetite back and is being playful. is just concerns me that he hasn't had a bowel movement yet :( please help.
My terrier mix ate a pen two days ago, it looked as if all pieces were chewed but not swallowed.... the next morning she had a bowel movement which contained diarrhea, mucus and blood.. we took her to the hospital and they ran blood work on her extensively and everything came back clear except liver enzyme a lil low but normal still... vet told us she thinks dog may have cilitosis... she is acting like her normal self.. today she through up her special canned dog food the vet gave her.. but she is still acting like her normal, playful, begging self... she is also on antibiotics.. what should i do? please help................thanx

Tom, I am going through a similar issue with my yellow lab swallowing a string. Two days ago she started vomiting with no other symptoms, still happy and hungry. And now she is still wagging her tail, trying to play and wanting food, but we took her to the vet today and she is scheduled for surgery tomorrow. Our vet put her on ragalen (sp?) Yesterday, for the vomiting but it didn't help. If your dog goes on that and is still vomiting there's a strong indication of blockage. Then our vet gave our Sophi a shot of a stronger anti-nasuea med. Today and she's still throwing up small amounts. Maybe suggest these two shots to the vet to eliminate upset stomach? Hope your dog doesn't have to go through surgery as well...good luck.
I'm a bit worried about my 4-month lab mix puppy. He's been having stool issues for just over a week: he started out with runny, very muscousy stools for a couple days but now he has hardly anything coming out and what does is either just watery with maybe some small soft lumps, or just very loose. This morning he went out and acted like he took a poop, but nothing came out at all. There was no straining or anything, he just acted like he took a normal, healthy poop. I looked at his butt and there was a tiny, tiny bit of soft stool. It hardly made a smear on the paper towle I blotted him with!
He acts fine, he runs around and plays and doesn't seem to have any abdominal pain even when I palpitate it a bit. He's had a little gas a few days but it's not constant. He's ravenous and eating fine, playing and walking fine too. I'm wondering if any of this is signs of a partial obstruction? He's not vomiting at all.
Thanks!
ashley, thank you for your response.... I dont know if this is a good indication or not, but last evening she did have a bowel movement. it was very runny, diarrhea but completely brown... today she ate in the morning and has yet to vomite... still acting like herself and begging for food as normal.. she has not thrown up since yestreday evening, the one time..i hope there is no blockage. I am sorry to hear about your lab. I hope the surgery goes well.. please let me know how she makes out..Thanx
I had a Morkie, one year old this month, until earlier tonight, when I found him lying dead in our backyard. Last night he ate fine, had no problems using the restroom, and was playing like usual. This morning my husband let him and our 13 yr old boxer out for a few hours, then when we had to leave I put him up in his kennel. When we got home a few hours later he had had diahhrea in the kennel...I noticed a small spot of vmoit on the floor, prob from earlier, that had a small string and small wood chips in it (he tends to grab small broken peices of wood from around our woodpile that we use in the fireplace & chews on them, but as soon as I see it I always stop him. I was not sure if he had thrown it up, or the boxer...but now I think it may have been him. I grabbed the kennel, took him outside, let him out, where he ran off like he had to potty, and went back inside. He was super muddy from his time outside this morning, so I was going to bathe him after they played outside a while, but when I went to call him he did not come to me like usual. After getting a flashlight and searching for him I found him lying on his side, obviously dead, next to the fence. My husband went to look at him, and when he pulled him over (he was already board stiff...prob died right after I put them outside :0( ) blood poured from his anus. He said when he first looked at him there was no blood until he moved his body. He placed him in a bad and just finished burying him in his favorite spot out back....I'm beside myself and cannot figure out what happened. He had all of his shots, great weight, drinking well, playing, etc... All I can think is that he got into something poisonous (but we could not find anything) or got a blockage from something. Like I said, I never saw him get sick, and I only found diahhrea that one time in his kennel before I let them out. Our boxer is just fine... I'm not going to take him and have him cut open to find out the real cause...I just can't handle that...but I would like someone to offer me an opinion. Thank you very much.
I forgot to mention above...the diahhrea in his kenel DID NOT have blood in it, but it did have some black looking stuff mixed in with the brown...almost like charcoal or something...fine kind of like sand.
Thanks so much for your reply. I was talking with some friends last night, who asked if he had gotten into any of the thanksgiving turkey by any chance, and as a matter of fact, the night before last I made my son a small plate with turkey & honey ham on it, and when he walked away for 30 secs to get a drink & went back he said scooter ate it all. At first I thought he may have thrown it away, saying the dog ate it so he didn't have to, but after checking in the trash & not finding any I think he was telling the truth. Scooter is the only animal here who could have gotten to the plate & cleaned it that fast. I have never heard of turkey or ham killing dogs, but from what I found online it seems that the high fat content in those foods can make them sick and cause pancreatitis....I found something about sudden acute pancreatitis (called something else) that can kill quickly....
I also think that if it had been an obstruction he would have been sicker for longer...whatever he may have ingested, if it was not the turkey & ham, had to have been yesterday morning while the dogs were out in the backyard, cuz he was okay then, & the first sign of a prob was yesterday afternoon around 4or 5 when we got home & I found the diahhrea in his kennel. Judging by how stiff he was, & that I don't recall hearing him bark even once after we let them out (which he ALWAYS does) I think he died shortly after we let them outside yesterday afternoon. It breaks my heart to think that he laid out there suffering while we were inside...but to be honest I am not sure he could have been saved even if we would have found him sooner...I mean dogs get diahhrea every once in a while, & it usually is gone by the next day, and if I had not seen any blood in the stool I would not have been alarmed enough to take him in to the vet before it killed him. I searched this morning for something he could have gotten into, & there is nothing...& with a 5 yr old we are super careful bout meds being around, so I know it wasn't that. We buried him last night...well if nothing else I hope this fares as a warning to others, that our pets can get into stuff without us even knowing it, so if this was a poisoning to be VERY careful & keep a constant eye on them.
My 13lb. Yorkie's stomach is full of gas. I can hear it across the room. Last night I let him have a rib bone but took it away before he could splitter it. Or so I thought. This morning he vomited 2x but not much, just yellow bile the 1st.time & brown the second. Did poop normal. But hasn't wanted to eat all day or drink much water. Had this before & received 2 shots at vet for gastritis. So worried as can't afford a trip to vet.Know I have to watch him ;if he seems worse will take him in.No fever ,just sad & listless. Last time he cried so I knew he was in pain but not now.
I have a 12 LB Italian Greyhound/Rat Terrier mix. Yesterday my dog had a very rumbly tummy and wasn't interested in food. I figured he would eat when his stomach settled. But he ended up throwing up bile with little red blood clots and this alarmed me greatly. I took him to the vet where they pampered his tummy, checked him for parasites and parvo. Both negative. at home his stools had been normal, but he had some bloody diarrhea while at the vet. They gave me an antibiotic and said he probably had a colitis. They told me not to feed him until the next morning and gave me a gastrointestinal health canned food to give him. The night that he was without food he whined and whined for his food so that was comforting. I fed him a small amount of the canned food this morning and he seemed very happy with it. My fiance fed him a little more before he left for work. When I came home from work there was a large pile of the food that he had vomited. No visible blood this time though. Since he isn't keeping anything down he hasn't had any stool that I could check. I'm beginning to wish they had done an x-ray but I can't afford another vet visit and the vet said he didn't feel anything while palpating and my dog didn't show any signs of pain in the abdomen. I'm very worried about him though. I don't know what to do.
I forgot to mention that the vomit with the blood yesterday was very mucus-like in consistency. Very stretchy. Not watery like it usually is when I've seen him vomit bile. And it was definitely vomit because he had very strong stomach contractions before vomiting.
Last night my dog had some stuffing tore out of one of his toys. About an hour after that and every since then he has been licking his lips tons and kind of doing a little cough. Hes acting so sick, he will barely eat, and when he does eat its grass. It kind of seems he wants to throw up by the little cough hes doing but he cant. If he did swallow a piece it was tiny and it was a piece of the fabric and a little bit of the stuffing. Hes having a hard time keeping his eyes opened and its only getting worse. Its very late right now and I plan on taking him to the vet as soon as I can tomorrow. Is there anything you think about this situation?
My10 month old pitbull eats everything! There has been numerous things in his poop! He sleeps in bed with my 7 year old son so I don't know if he is eating these things while were sleeping... anytime we can not watch him he is crated. On Sunday, he began vomiting. The first time it was a whole sock and everytime after is was just yellow bile. He ate his breakfast but not too long after he vomited all of that up. Come Monday he would not eat or drink anything! I gave him an ice cube and immediately vomited that up. I began to freak out! I called the vet and they made us an appt first thing in the am. I actually had to go with my mom to the vet for our 16 year old cocker because she was also in bad shape. Her kidneys were failing so we had to put her to sleep :( at the vet for my dog they did an exam and xray and couldn't really see anything...the vet said it was blurry. He said the only options were to get him meds and take him home and wait or do exploratory surgery. Since he also had not pooped since Sunday I didn't want to wait any longer. I was so upset my little guy had to get cut open. That ended up being the right choice because there was a sock stuck in his intestines along with large amounts of backed up poop. The vet said if we had waited he might not have made it. We took him home that night but since then he's been growling and going after his sister and my son. Is this just cause he's in pain? We were supposed to take him back to the vet but we can not afford it. Is there help with paying for this bill? I cleaned out my bank account along with borrowing money from my mom for this. It was $1500. I am on disability so I do not have the mmeans to pay for anything else but I'm worried he's in pain because something isn't right. Also what should he be eating? They also neutered him which I didn't know about until they were done. I didn't complain because it was free and I wanted it sooner or later. Please help. I can not deal with him attacking my girl and son! Thanks so much.
I have a 50 lb boxer that, after not paying attention to her for only a short time, ate the remainder of her raw hide chew, which was about 4"x2"5". Don't think she swallowed it whole, just chewed and ate it quickly. She just woke me up with gagging, was restless for 20 min., never vomited and has now gone back to sleep. Since she's not actually vomiting or in pain, does that mean she's passing it? Btw, she at it 5 hrs. ago, what do you recommend I do? I want to put off going to the vet for financial reasons, but the safety of my dog is the more important than saving a few buck
I suspect my corgi swallowed a gold earring on Sunday afternoon (it's now Thursday afternoon). It is a hoop earring the size of a quarter. He's not shown any signs of distress. I called the vet and was told to feed him bread. I gave my dog six pieces of bread from Sunday afternoon to Monday night. I have checked for the earring in his stool but no sign of it. There has also not been an increase in the volume of stool despite all that bread. How much longer should I continue to look for the earring? Could feeding him all that bread keep it from coming out? Like I said, I am not 100% sure he ate it, but under the circumstances (he was sitting right next to me when I dropped it) it is a good possibility and I have been unable to find it otherwise.
I have a 3 year old minature poodle x who is a definite hoover, she last week ate a christmas present(box paper contents and all) from under our Christmas tree and up until this week she seemed quite normal. However all of a sudden developed lethargy and began whimpering when she moved. We rushed her to the Vet where the diagnosed her as having a fever and swollen abdomen. She has been in there for two days on IV fluids and they had to stomach tube her to drain 177mls of fluid out of her stomach so they could do an ultrasound on her. She is not eating (I went down there to see if I could persuade her to eat however the stomach tube seemed to bother her) and the ultrasound didnt show up anything. Her bloods have all come back normal but she is still showing signs of tummy soreness and she still wont eat. The Vets are preplexed about what to do and are thinking about a barium xray....is this the normal procedure??? My husband is worried that the vet may be stringing us along to add up the costs!
I have a 12-month old, 19 lbs cavalier/poodle mix who swallowed an entire chicken wing drumlet last night. Took him to the vet for xray today and we saw the bone in his stomach. The vet sent us home and asked us to monitor him for any behavior change or vomiting. Will my dog's stomach try to digest the entire bone before pushing it to the intestines? And for how long? We went to the vet right away as I know that it could be a major problem if the bone gets lodged on the intestine, but the vet didn't say that a surgery is required at this moment.
I have a 15 week Bichon Shih Tzu. He is 6.5 lbs. Four days ago he ate a plastic button (with an approximate circumferance of 1.5 cenitmeters or 1/3 of an inch. Three days before the button incident I started weening him onto a new food. His appetite is the same. He's drinking lots of water and urinating normally. He usually poops 4 times a day. Yesterday was three and today he only went when we first woke up at 7am (it is 1230pm now) and it was a lot smaller than normal. It also seemed to be drier but was still soft. There has been no vomiting, diarrhea or straining to poop. I have been continually checking his belly to see if it becomes distended (which it has not) and he does not cry in pain when I push on his belly or when he is pooping. I have given him high fibre bread today to see if this does the trick. Do you think there could be a blockage or is there a chance the new food could be causing him to go less? Thank You!
thanks is there a site where Vet. Medicine students can get more information about Vet. anatomy? send the details to my in box I have interest in Vet. medicine
We have a 5 month old mini doxon (11 lbs). Last night at 9pm he threw up and that seemed odd. Then he threw up a little later and out came this large mass of sock and hair and probably some synthetic pillow stuffing from his bed he has recently pulled apart. But I didn't think he was eating any of that stuffing because we found it all over the kitchen and living room.
We gave him some water and he threw up the rest of his stomach contents (3 times) over the next 5 hours. I had enogh and took him to the emergency 24 hour clinic. He was very tender in his abdomen indicating a blockage but I didn't know if that was from the sock and other stuff he threw up causing lasting pain or if a smaller piece got into his small intestine. No fever. They did an x-ray and it was, of course, an inconclusive $140 cool picture. They recommended hosptalizing him for observation for 24 hours and they would rehydrate him with IV - all this for another $250 or so. I passed and brought him home.
He had some water at 5am and threw up around 7am. At 8:30 he ate some of his regular food soaked in water (he won't touch the soft canned food I brought home from the vet) and some water. That lasted about 4 hours when he vomited. Then he had some more water.
His underside is no longer tender. He has gone pee twice but no bowel movelment for 21 hours.
The worst part is that we are going on vacation out of the country tomorrow for 2 weeks. A friend is planning to stay at our place for that period but a sick dog seems like a big responsibility. Plus Spike will be alone all day long. Who knows if it will come to this but the exploratory surgury would cost about $2000 at the clinic I went to last night.
Maybe I should board him at our regular vet and have them keep an eye on him. $2000 seems like a lot of money for a dog. But I don't want to let the little guy just die or have to put him down. There is a 5 year old daughter involved who would not be happy!!!
Our hopes are that he threw everything up but there is a chance he didn't. Maybe another x-ray would help since now there has been more time for gas pockets to build up behind a potential blockage.
Any advice?
the question was for another place. its a mistake
My hoover ate god only knows what. He threw up something (sock type consistancy) yesterday morning, fine all day. then threw up digested dinner late last night, and small amount of diarrhea. Did not give breakfast this am, didn't seem to bother him, bad sign. I canned pumpkin really a good way to go to get him to try to pass? I can't afford the vets around here who think their office is made of gold (I worked for them, I know)
My Doberman is around 8 months old and she has been known to eat socks. She has thrown them up a few times. Last weekend I noticed her not feeling well, and she wouldn't eat much. Then she stopped eating. I took her to the vet and they did an x-ray and it showed her small intestine was dialted, so they did surgery because it was probably a foreign object. A sock had gotten stuck in her small intestine. The vet said there was a pretty big portion of small intestine that was purple and he did not want to remove all of it. He's hoping it will heal, but he doesn't know for sure. The sugery was Monday, and ever since she has been hooked up to IVs so keep her hydrated, she's been given antibiotics and something to coat her stomach. She has yet to eat. We've tried giving her chicken, chicken and gravy, cheese, and like three different dog foods. And she has no interest. Please help me out here. Any ideas to get her to eat? Anything I can do? Or the vet can do? I don't want her to die. But the vet said if her intestine doesn't heal, then she might not make it. I've seen her everyday this week to try to get her to eat, and everyday she seems a little better, I little more perky, but I can tell she still doesn't feel good. PLEASE help me out!!
All I can say is NEVER leave ANYTHING with your dog that he might ingest while you are gone. I just spent 2800.00 last July for a working line German shepherd. After destroying the basement, pulling Up carpet and etc. I left him with a squeaky toy at 9 months of age. I knew better. He swallowed about half of it which became obstructed in his intestine. I was quoted 3000.00 to 5000.00. The saving grace was that after they put him under and opened him up his intestines relaxed and he passed it through to his colon and they removed it without having to open his intestines up. Cost? 1400.00 since he was opened up for an extra 100.00 he performed a gastropexy where they attach the stomach wall to the rib, thereby preventing stomach bloat which is fairly common among large chested breeds. You can bet I will remember this and NEVER let this happen again. The sad part is I know better and it was my fault and not his. He never has a problem with raw bones and etc. I hope and pray all your dogs get well and that you learn by your mistakes like I have. All my woes happened today. Merry Christmas.
My dog was just running around with us when I noticed something sticking out of her butt. It looks like a dryer sheet or something very similar. We tried pulling on it to see if it would come out, but its pretty long and after my friend said it's best not to pull on it, we stopped. I just gave her some warm milk and I am going to boil up some rice as well (those are the 2 things I have in my house that I have seen as home remedies) but anyway its Saturday New Years day so I know it will cost a fortune to take her into the vet today. Based on what I have read online it seems like she will be fine if it already made it that far through, but I am scared now that we could have hurt her by pulling. Do you have any advice for me? I am hoping that it will pass naturally by end of day, if not we will take her in tomorrow.
I don't want to give the wrong advice for your particular situation, but I have pulled things out that were hanging out if it pulled out with no resistance. If it made it that far, I doubt that it's stuck but use your own best judgment.
Our 4 years old jack russel hasn't had bawl movement for 2 days. we noticed he acted weird 3 days ago, we thought he was upset because we weren't home much because of holidays. Then, yesterday, we saw him having a hard time to go #2, and he had diarrhea that was a size of a red bean. We can't think of anything strange he ate, only we can think of are table food we gave from leftover and rawhide bone we gave to him on Christmas, which is like a week ago.
We gave enema about a hour ago and he tried to go but just water came out and a little bit of diarrhea like yesterday. Now I am cooking rice and chicken to see if it helps him to go.
He vomited once yesterday but that's about it. He eats okay, he doesn't want to eat dog food though. He wants meat (we had pork) and he ate it pretty good. He drinks water okay, and we gave milk, prob about a cup. He has no sign of being pain.
What else can we do???
My 4 month old shiba inu has a habit of eating things off the floor, small rocks, paint chips, carpet fibers that he pulls up - so I frequently worry about him getting an obstruction. Last night he ate much more than usual for dinner. Then he just looked FAT. Like his sides were all ballooned out. He is very hyper and was being lazy, and his tummy was hard when I pressed it. He tried to poo but nothing came out. This morning his stomach looked a little smaller, he was hyper and playful, and went a little bit of diarhea but not much. He hasn't thrown up. The bloating was alarming but he's acting normal and it is going down. At what point should I be concerned? Was he just full from dinner and I'm being paranoid? He puffed up quickly...
My Chihuahua has been ill for about a week now-we noticed he could not jump up on the couch and then he would lay down on his stomach and crawl backwards-he also seemed to have trouble with his back legs so we thought he hurt his hip-we took him to the vet and they said he had feces backed up and we should take him in for surgery to the tune of $3000+ !! Some told us to feed him pumpkin with wet dog food and oil drizzled over this--we have done this and he goes back and forth-one day he is his chipper self and the next day he is lethargic and crabby, not wanting to be touched--he has trouble jumping up on the couch--he has not ever thrown up or had diarreah--does anyone know how many days it will take for him to pass this blockage? He has been known to eat kleenex and underwear! YUCK--if anyone one who has had similar problems please let us know how long it takes to pass or if we are just prolonging his agony. Thank you
I just got back from the vet hospital. my 1 yr old chihuahua just got out of surgery. he ingested some nylabone (from the red/blue and yellow keys from nylabone) ..he almost died. A few pieces of blue and red keys were stuck in his intestine and he had to have surgery to remove it. He's not out of the woods yet - and I probably wont see him home for another three days (at the earliest). These are supposed to be SAFE for dogs? I'm so upset right now. How can they still have these on the shelves at the Pet store? GEESH. I want to know how they plan to pay for his surgery - cash? check or charge!
Hello, My dog Clide is a basset hound and earlier today he barfed up three whole socks in a round tube along with some food. Then a like an hour ago he had really terrible diarrhea and he pooped out another sock! and now he seems to be feeling a lot better. But I was just wondering if you thought i should watch him to make sure he didn't eat anything else. But he seems to be just fine now! Thank goodness!
my dog at a condom...yeah pretty embarrassing. of course it was a weekend so he needed to go the emergency vet. lets just say he is no longer allowed in the bathroom. lol
My Giant Schnauzer ate a soft back library book (a Clifford book!) on Friday afternoon. He started having diarrhea Saturday afternoon and threw up some of the book around 6pm on Saturday. He has had several totally liquid stools since 6pm yesterday (Saturday) and just threw up only liquid. We fed him a light dinner last night but have not fed him since then (21 hrs since the light meal). Any suggestions on what we should do? Should we continue to fast him? Should he see the vet tomorrow? Thanks!
About 4 hours ago, my dog got ahold of a hard plastic flashlight. She held it in her paws and started chewing on the edge of it where the glass is. Before I realized what she was doing, she had eaten about half way around the edge of the flashlight. I have no idea how big the pieces were, but I doubt that anything she's swallowed is very big.
Now she's turning down food (she NEVER does that) and vomiting. The only thing she has any interest in is that darned flashlight! I got it out again to look and see how big the pieces she ate could be, and she was up and at it instantly!
It's been about 4 hours now, the Vet is closed, and we are expecting an ice storm all night (Why is it always after the vet closes when they do these things?. I'm not sure what I should do. I doubt she'll eat the cotton balls since she's turning down canned food.
What should I do?????
Well, I DID call the vet, and he told me to give her Pepto Bismol, or Kaopectate, and if that didn't help that he'd be in his office tomorrow. If she got a lot worse I was to take her to the ER Vet.
Before I could even get to buy the Pepto, she was running around eating everything in sight and acting perfectly normal again! It was like some kind of strange miracle. I'm going to continue to watch her tonight and take her to the vet tomorrow, but I think she's alright. Right now she wants to play even.
I guess I can get over my panic attack now!
Thanks to those of you who gave this thought. Sorry to have wasted your time.
My 16 week lab pup has had diarrhoea and mucousy stools for 3 days he's on a bland diet mainly rice and boiled chicken which is hellping now he's wentand swallowed one of my makeup wipes - he was too quick for me to get it off him! I,m hoping as its soft it should pass easily fingers crossed
My 3 month old 4 lb yorkie must have eaten something she shouldn't have on the porch yesterday. She started vomited around 7pm but had 2 normal stools. The vomiting continued so I took her to the emergency clinic at midnight. They gave her a shot which stopped her from vomiting immediately. She slept through the night but she is very tired and not eating, I tried chicken and rice. She drank a little water. I gave her some Nutrical. I hate to bring her back to the emergency clinic, I felt like they were just trying to get money from me. Does it sound like it can wait until tomorrow when my regular vet is open?
Wow, this is an excellent article and it has already helped so many dogs! Great work and thanks for the information.
I'm so happy I stumbled across this post. I picked up a puppy from the breeder 2 weeks ago and the morning I picked him up the breeder said one of the puppy's collars had gone missing. Even though there were 10 puppies in the whelping box I was confident if someone had eaten the collar it would have been the puppy I picked. Well yesterday morning I found the collar. My puppy coughed hard and when I came into the other room he was acting suspicious and when I approached him he took off running. I finally caught him and there he was chewing on the missing collar.
I called the breeder frantic not knowing if it was possible for something to stay in a dog's stomach that long. She said she'd never heard of it, but now I know I'm not alone. I will now rest
my dog is currently in the vets recovering from an op that she had a few hours ago, somehow as she is a hoover dog she managed to swallow a piece of string with pottery or plastic at either end and she had been really sick since late last night at first the vet x rayed her and said it could be caused by small fragments of bones but he operated and found out that it was actually string wrapped roung her intestines
My 3 month old lab/rot mix is acting very tired, she is not drinking or eating and is very whiny. She leans to one side when she walks and is having a hard time standing??? Vet in the morning, but I was wondering if you had any ideas? a pillow is missing some suffing, if she ate that, what do I do? Was fine when I left for work, then started acting like this around 4pm today.
I have a now 1 yr old Australian Cattle Dog mix and he eats just about everything but food. He loves to swallow socks whole! He usually pukes them up 2 days later like clock work. Underwear too, but they seem to make it through his system and come out the other end.
My worry right now is a plastic water bottle cap he swallowed whole, hoping that will not cause a blockage. He also loves to eat napkins, tissues and any kind of paper, especially paper towels. I have never owned a dog quite like this one! Never a dull moment around our house with him around.
alexadry-
I took her to the vet, he said to wait until tuesday i she hasnt passed it by then to bring her back in, she is drinking alittle and urinating today which is more than she was doing, I am so glad I found your site/blog, you have wonderful & funny stories and advice, I will keep up with it just to read the stories, thank you!!!!
My 4 month puppy has been eating rocks everyday and i see that she has passed a couple.. im really worried about it? how can i tell if there is a blockage? How do i get her to stop eating rocks?
My 4 month old shihtzu swallowed a button from my couch about 25 minutes ago. The vet doesnt come in for another 30-45 minutes. The button was about the size of a quarter, but about 1/2 thick and had some fabric on it. I saw her get it, and tried to get it out of her mouth. I felt it but in a split second it was gone. Right afterwards she had a bowel movement and ate some food. She's now sleeping. What should I do for my baby? :(
MY 1 yr old dog labrador ate a big sock on saturday morning, we are now today wednesday. nothing has come out either end, he eats like he's starving ( which he was like that since we got him) and he goes to poop twice a day, and pees regularly. THe vet has told me to come in to get him checked, but since he does go do #2 should i just wait a bit more?
thanks
any help would be great
Hi - I am only a guest to this hub, but I'm really worried about my golden retriever. Two days ago she
had dreadful diarrhea (like dark yellow water, full of
tiny bubbles. Yesterday she was sick - she brought up
what looked like chewed up wood and its smell was so awful every room in the house was smelling with it. The
wood was mixed with dark yellow bile. I fed her rice all
day yesterday and she seems better today so I gave her
the usual kibble and fresh chicken breast and she has
eaten it with relish. The only thing is when I took her
out for her walk in the woods, the very first thing she
did when I let her off her lead was to eat a chunk of
wood. She has only just started eating wood and I don't
know what to do about it, apart from never letting her
off the lead, which doesn't seem fair. Please advise
me. I am a pensioner and don't have a lot of money for
vet bills. Many thanks!
whole house
My advice to anyone who suspects their dog ate something he/she shouldn't have: take them to the VET IMMEDIATELY!
Two days ago, my King Charles Cavalier (my very best friend) was sick with diarrhea and throwing up. He was fine in the morning, but had gotten sick while I was at work. He wouldn't eat or drink anything and just laid around.
I was watching him closely to make sure he was OK and was about to take him to the Emergency Vet. Then he threw-up something he ate ~~ maybe a sock or underwear. It smelled horrible, like it may have been in his stomach or somewhere else awhile. But he acted like he felt better ... wagging his tail and looked perkier... although still not wanting a dog treat or anything.
So I took him to bed (it was 2 AM at this point). When I woke up at 6 AM, I found him barely breathing..... I rushed him to the Emergency Vet and he passed away on the way there.
Now reading these posts, I realize the damage was probably already done to his intestine wall and he could've been saved if the object would've been found earlier or the intestine repaired in time.
My family is so sad ... we lost our best friend. I'm devastated because I didn't know what the warning signs were and didn't know that it could be so severe. I thought he just had a bug at first. Now he's gone.
I don't mean to sound so depressing .... I just want to make sure someone else doesn't miss a symptom that may be life threatening.
my 1 yr old beagle mix ingested pillow stuffing about a week ago. She vomited 3 nights in a row, so I brought her to the vet. Vet gave her fluids, Xrays and special food (gastronomic?). He said to give her small amounts of the food and small amounts of water at 2 hr intervals for a few days. This worked well and no vomiting for a 2 day span.
She vomited again last night, this time after eating an ice cube, which I thought could get her some additional hydration. It seems that it is only the water that triggers it, as she's able to hold down food fine. She's also been able to hold down small amounts of water (mostly from me feeding to her from my hand).
Any idea how it can be just the water which triggers the vomiting? The xrays from the vet didn't show anything significant blocking. She's been pooping mostly regular, for what I expect with the new food. Should I try the pumpkin idea to clean her out a little?
my dog vomits right after eating for 5 days now, the vet prescribe ang gave her antibiotics, metronidazole and metoclopramide for vomiting but just this morning she would not eat at all..what could possibly happening to my dog?
I have a four year old lab and on Thursday of last week we brought her into the vet because she was acting very strange. During the morning she was whining to go outside which she never does and we let her out and she passed her stool I didn't look then to see if it was hard or soft but as she as walking back to come in the house she fell four times she had no balance and while she was inside aggression kept looking her balance and would lay down looking very lethargic. I made a vet appt for her and as we were waiting to go to the vet I had her on the couch with me and she lost control of her bladder she printed on herself and didn't even know it. They did blood work at the vet and they said everythinglooked good and by that night she seemed to be getting back to normal. The next day Friday she seemed pretty good as well but then on Saturday she started throwing up and not wanting to eat her dog food. So I bought her some canned soft food on Sunday hoping she would eat that and she did the first night but yesterday annd today she wouldn't eat it. She ate some regular food lastnight and then threw it up in the middle of the night. She is still drinking water and lots of it but she throws that up to sometimes. She is also still urinating but she has horrible gas. Yesterday she did have a bowel movement and it was hard in the beginning but very very loose towards the end. She is not herself at all no energy and tired and not wanting to eat or play. She is a hoover dog and eats everything. I think there may be some sort of blockage but I'm not sure reading the other posts because she still had a bowel movement as of yesterday. Please help with any advice I am very worried about her. I am planning on bringing her to the vet tomorrow.
Over a week ago (I think on the 4th of March), my 7-month old boxer/lab pup chewed apart a piece of hard thick plastic and swallowed a piece about the size of the end of my finger. Maybe 1" square, but with at least one sharp edge or point. For a week he ate and pooped normally. I checked his stool everyday and did not find the plastic. Last Friday the 11th I let him have a little bit of rawhide, and also a treat which he is not used to getting. Since Saturday afternoon he has had liquid diarrhea when he poops and on Sunday he did not want to eat. I took him to the emergency vet on Sunday because I am afraid he has a partial blockage. X-rays showed some abdominal distention and inflammation, but otherwise were inconclusive. I was told that plastic does not show up well on x-ray. They gave him sub-q fluids and an anti-nausea medicine and antibiotics. Yesterday he was happy and eating well, but he had no bowel movement at all for over 24 hours, then later he had three episodes of diarrhea. He's had a lot of gas as well. I've been giving him broth I made from chicken and water to keep him hydrated, but this morning again he is not interested in food very much. I called my vet yesterday and they cant see me until NEXT Monday! Does this sound like a partial blockage to you?? I am afraid the plastic bit has become stuck somewhere in his small intestine as he has not vomited at all but he has had consistent diarrhea and gas for 4 days now. Thank you!
Oh and is anything I give him like bread or potatoes or anything really going to help if the object is far along his small intestine as I suspect? He eats a raw meat diet which normally makes very little stool, I was thinking of getting some dog food to bulk it up and maybe help push things along. Would this be wise or cause more harm?
I have a 1 yr and 5 month old boxer and since the day we got her at 8 weeks she has had a blanket fetish, if you will. She always had a blanket in her mouth just holding it there. We thought she would grow out of it, maybe it was her way of coping being away from her mom and siblings. Well come to find out it has turned into a blanket eating fetish. I kennel her during the day and there are a few blankets in there for comfort and they are shredded. Today I got home from work fed her and within 15 mins. she vomited 5 times and the first 2 piles had blanket shreds in them. She did this yesterday too.
I have a 2 year old Spinger Spaniel called Bailey. 1 week ago today he had major surgery to remove a stone from his intestines. I rushed him into the vets on 10th March as he was vomitting white froth and blood. He was drooling grren all over the house, long starnds coming from both sides of his mouth.
After xray the vet rang and said he had an obstruction in his gut and surgery was the only option. After his surgery the vet rang and said he was really ill! they had to have his intestines out of his body to find the stone, there was infection around that area and they had to cut some of his intestine away, she asked if we wanted to go see him.
Oh my god he looked so ill, I cried all night.
Bailey is home now, long nasty scar on his belly, but he is alive and getting back to normal. People say 'its just a dog' but I love him so much he is such a good friend. I will be watching him like a hawk in the future. Love to you all and your pets....
Yesterday my dog Gracie swallowed a piece of rawhide that was a little over an inch and a half long. Normally I don't give rawhides, so I went against my better judgement and gave her a chicken wrapped rawhide. When she swallowed it, she freaked out and yiped a lot, but then she was fine. She ate dinner, played with my other dog, etc. She has not pooped, however, since 5 yesterday. She shows no sign of discomfort and she isn't vomiting or even trying to use the bathroom. I am seeing my vet in the morning just in case, but wondered what your advice is. Thanks.
I took him to another vet yesterday and they did an exploratory surgery on him this morning. Found nothing!!! Where is the plastic? I have no idea! At least I know it is not stuck inside him. Now they think he has a bacterial overgrowth making him sick, and sending him home with different antibiotics than he got at the E-vet. If he doesn't get better with those he will have to have a barium study done.
Thank you for your concern and for this hub, it is helping a lot of people I think.
My 5 month old labrador swallowed a piece of chewed up rawhide bone yesterday. It was a small piece, but she did it before I could get it away from her.
This morning she didn't seem to feel well. She ate, but not enthusiastically as she usually does. She has gone to the bathroom normally twice today, drank some water too. BUT she is lethargic. Very unusual for her. She is sleeping all day.
Reading though these posts I am feeling afraid. Should I be worried? Can she digest the piece of rawhide she swallowed?
Gracie update: all is fine! Talked to the vet the next AM and they said to watch for coughing and vomiting. She has been going potty normally and no signs of adverse effects. I am relieved, the treats were returned, and we are back to normal. Thanks to this site I knew what to look for before my vet could tell me!
Hi - our Golden Retriever is vomiting several hours after eating. I'm wondering if she might have a blockage of kitty litter?? She has had access to the litter box and loves to dine there until we catch her. Thinking about giving her some 'greens' or some pumpkin to help..? Can't afford a vet visit at all.
It is a non-clumping litter, thankfully. I've pressed around her stomach and she doesn't mind too much. She can drink water. So far hasn't vomited tonight. I've heard about giving pumpkin when the dog's stomach is upset... but what does it actually do?
I've got a six year old French Bulldog and he'll eat almost anything that we drop with lightening speed. Last night we were cleaning some stuff up and a tea light candle dropped out and with my dog right beside me, he snatched it up and gulped it down. I immediately called the vet and they didn't seem to be overly worried (its the metal or tin piece im worried about) they gave pretty much the same advice that im reading. However, I'm still worried.
The dog doesn't seem to acting out of the ordinary, although right after eating he was licking his lips quite a lot. So I decided to let it slide for the evening.
Woke up this morning and he responded very well to food. He's been drinking water. I've been feeding him bread from time to time in hopes that his stomach will keep moving.
Should I be worried? Should I just take him to the vet?
Yes, my 14lb shitzu, i think ate a used tea bag friday morning, ate fine played all day i called vet she said make him vomit, but i was at work with him and didnt get home till after 7hours and figured that was too late so i waited. and i have been waiting , hes still playing drinking water, eating food, and still passing normal stools. i cant find any signs of the teabag, could the stomach digest this used tea bag or is it still in there and still hasnt passed or is on the way there? any help would be great thanks.
My shitsu just got out of surgery today, They found a peach pit loged in his intestines, they said if I would have waited 1 more night he would not have made it. :(
My 11 month old chocolate Standard Poodle just past away she was the ultimate vacuum one time she ate and passed a whole 3 foot waist tie (for bikinis) we did not even know she ate it, until she tried to poop it... needless to say my wife and I had to help it out (gross) I suspect she died of a blockage but did not have a autopsies performed x-rays did not show anything but the vet could not rule blockage out. My advice is if you suspect anything like blockage with your dog is to get them to the vet right away my dog only showed signs for 1 day she was throwing up and not eating I took her to the vet thinking she was going to be ok and they called me the next morning to tell me my little baby Sadie did not make it, even though she was showing signs of improvement, we are devastated if I would have known more about blockage symptoms I may have been able to prevent it by noticing signs earlier and making them do more tests and not just 1 x-ray that didn't show anything :( x-rays don’t pick up soft objects (socks, string, etc.) now our family has lost a very special friend she was something special…….
My almost 10 month husky decided to raid he trash can a couple days ago, (I had wings that night) and she has stopped eating solid foods, I mixed 5 cut up cotton balls into some wet food and she has eaten it all. Hopefully they all clear without problems, she has a vet appointment on Tuesday if nothing clears by then. Any other advice?
What is it with doodles and socks? Our 7 month old Goldendoodle definitely has a sock fetish. He loves knee high stockings and can swallow them down in a flash.
He had pooped a couple and vomited them on his own a few times. The first time I actually witnessed him devouring one of my knee highs I induced vomiting with peroxide, because I thought it would be better than waiting for it to come out the other way or even worse...developing an obstruction. Imagine my surprise when an white cotton ankle sock came out wrapped so tightly that it looked like a whole sausage! But where was the GREEN sock I saw him swallow....the question was answered when he vomited that one a few minutes later.
Yesterday, I induced vomiting again, because my daughter was convinced that he had swallowed another anklet. This time there was a pair of socks....but not the color that my daughter thought was missing!!!!
So he still had tummy troubles and developed some watery diarrhea...and late last night pooped out the other sock! Three socks in one dog?!?!?
I wish he would associate eating socks with GI problems but that doesn't seem to be the case. He also loves shoes, eyeglasses, undies, tissues, paper towels, napkins, and destroying his toys. However, he only seems to eat the socks and paper products....other stuff he just chews up and leaves a big mess all over the house.
I think some aversion training is in order, and was going to spray some socks with PHOOEY and leave them out and see what happens....of course under observation. I would reduce the number of PHOOEY coated socks and substitute some untreated socks. I also like Tricia's ideas of the mouse traps. I'm going to place these on the counters and in the laundry baskets.
Do you think my plan will work??? He is soooo sneaky that we don't even know where he finds some of this stuff. Any other ideas?!!?
Alexandry - she has had a couple bile vomits, i gave her some generic pepto to calm her tummy. over night her stools have gone to diarrhea, no signs of the cotton I was able to get down her, but I did see bone fragments in her last one, she is eating wet foods and her energy levels are picking up a tad, I have checked her for abdominal pains and nowhere seems to bother her. I am quite firm but cautious with palpations. Hopefully she munched them into small enough pieces not to cause major problems
She still has diarrhea, but is eating soft foods in healthy amounts, with her energy levels back to normal. I'm still going to talk o the vet about it tomorrow
Found a tender spot, if dog anatomy is similar to human anatomy, then the bones would be near the beginning of the resending colon. Gonma give her a little more cotton tonight to help it pass the rest of the way out
I am startimg to worry that my young husky might not make it. My wife and I had to force feed her tonight, she has had one bowel movement in over 12 hours and it was a small amout of pure liquid diarrhea. No blood, no bone fragments, no cotton. I'm praying she makes it, but preparing for the other.
My Chocolate lab ate part of a turkey wishbone yesterday morning, it was about a 3 inch piece, but I saw the rest of the broken bone afterwards, not while he was eating it - so I am not sure how much he chewed it up. It's been over 24 hours and he's still eating and has had 2 normal BMs, so I am not feeling the rush to take him to the vet just yet. How long should this take to pass? I just want to be sure I am watching closely for the appropriate amount of time for any behavior that may indicate he's got a problem.
He has eaten his meals since then with enthusiasm, and has been begging for treats. I did give him a few pieces of bread after I knew he ate it.
He is crated during the day while my husband and I are at work, and I plan on going home again on my lunch break to be sure he's still feeling well, but I just want to know when we'd be safely 'out of the woods' in regards to anything terrible happening!
alexadry, thank you for your suggestions. He really is quite comical, he makes us laugh as well. If swallowing things were not just so dangerous, it wouldn't be so bad.
So because he was still having diarrhea and my daughter was so worried, a trip to the vet was in order yesterday. X-ray revealed nothing, but as you know, may just mean it is something radiolucent...although our vet thought she should at least see an area. My thought is that if a sock got mixed with some food, it might look somewhat normal anyway. Anyway, $600 dollars later (glad we have insurance to cover part of this!) some hydration and a flagyl Rx, he is home chillin' on small bland meals today after having nothing yesterday (per the vet's instruction). She thinks his GI tract may just be irritated from passing that last pesky anklet, and is giving flagyl as a precaution. We figure he lost about 8 pounds since last Thursday, although a lot of that could be fluid loss.
So he seems almost back to normal...happy and playful...but still with diarrhea and a pretty sore butt. i may try some of that canned pumpkin today.
Melliston, I hope your husky pup is doing better....
3 hours with the Army Veterinary Corps and $211. We can safely say that there is no intestinal blockage, what she does have is a "raging UTI" and Bacterial Colitis, 2 different meds for 2 weeks.... could have been a lot worse
I've got a 4 year old boxer who has a pretty sensitive digestive system to begin with. I can only feed her lamb & rice dry food or she has intermittent runny stools. So, a week ago she ate part of a dog toy that had a recorder sound device. I think there was a small computer chip in it. Anyway, she did some pretty violent vomiting and ate grass like crazy. I gave her some peroxide but she'd already been throwing up for a good two hours. The next day she was fine.
I checked her poop every day and there was a significant amount of grass in them, but no sign of the plastic/computer chip. I accounted for all of the plastic casing, but have no idea what was inside it, although there was much of the chip stuff intact.
So, here's the confusing part. She's been eating and pooping (no diarrhea, no bloody anything), acting totally normal--barking, jumping up the brick wall, playing, etc. 7 days later she's back to the 2 hours of violent vomiting, but the next day she's fine again. No bloating, distended belly, nothing out of the ordinary. I've been feeding her cooked chicken and rice. Is there something I can give her to help pass whatever may be stuck in there? I've read all the posts about pumpkin, potatoes, etc., but it's been long enough that whatever she's got in there should be in her intestines.
I'm a little worried about my 4 month old puppy who spent a few hours in the backyard yesterday without my supervision. He is acting completely normal, but this morning when I went to give him a belly rub, his belly felt incredibly hard packed (upper abdomen, just below his rib cage). He pooped normal last night and this morning, but I know its good to catch these things early. He might have eaten wood chips, that's the only thing I cannot account for. I have never noticed such a hard spot in his belly before. He ate breakfast and lunch with his normal gusto. How long does lethargy, pain, and vomiting usually take to show up?
Thanks for the reply. He just pooped out a sock. I am so lucky! I
My 10 week old Mini Schnauzer swallowed a large piece of an edible Nylabone about 12 hours ago. I was sitting right beside her and she coughed and whimpered as it went down and I tried to grab it from her mouth but was too late. She is acting fine and has not vomited or shown any signs of being in distress. She is having normal bowel movements and eating as normal. After reading this thread, I am concerned I should take her to the emergency vet. Do you have any advice?
P.S. It was a Nylabone Healthy Edibles Lamb and Apple for Puppies
Our 6yo shar pei/shepherd mix ate a piece of pork rib about 2.5 hours ago. She seems normal but i'm worried --appreciate this thread, your dedication/love, and of course your advice! Will keep an eye on her for 48-72 hours but should I call our vet Monday for consult? Thank you in advance.
Will definitely keep an eye on her. Thank you so very much!
Have learned more from this site than any other...thanks for all the helpful posts. We have a lhasapoo that we adopted from the shelter 3 weeks ago. She has severe separation anxiety. Five days ago, we went to the grocery, and when we returned home about an hour later, she had eaten sections of faux wood window blinds. I think they are actually some sort of composite plastic. There were big pieces all over the floor, as well as tiny pieces. I have no idea if and what she swallowed. Yesterday, she had bloody stool. The blood was bright red. Otherwise, she seemed fine. I have been watching her closely...she has had loose and more frequent stool, some with a bit of blood, some with none. One of her movements was pure mucus which had a milky look. She has been eating fine and not throwing up. However, she has had a lot of changes in the past few weeks. She was an owner surrender, stayed at the shelter a week. We adopted her and picked her up the day she was spayed. We had to go out of town and she stayed in our home with a sitter for a week. Then, she was there with my daughter for a week. This week, she moved to another state, another new home with me. She has seemed to adjust fine and hasn't been left alone. But now I don't know if the bloody stool is from the blinds, (haven't found any pieces in the stool), stress from all the changes, food change? I don't want to panic, but I don't want anything to happen to her. Of course, it's Sunday, and we live in a rural area, nowhere near an emergency vet. Should I try Kaopectate?
Thanks for the advice! Still no signs of a problem but I will definitely continue to watch her for the next few days and will not be giving her any more of this product.
On Wednesday my dog threw up 10 times. Thursday morning I took him to the vet. My dog has always been a "bad pooper" and is also a bit of a Hoover so we watch home regularly to make sure he is all right. The vet knows this so when I brought him in on Thursday the vet said he is most likely allergic to his food and the "pooping" problem is a symptom of this. He gave my dog two needles, one to keep him from vomiting, another for tummy irritation and a Paste to line his tummy. The doctor directing me to buy expensive gastronomic dog food and sent me on my way. We've been hand feeding him everyday small amounts and he keeps it down for 5-7 hours. He has had a couple of runny poops but most of the time he goes through the motions and nothing comes out. This is Sunday and he hasn't kept food down longer than 7 hours since Tuesday he has had 3 runny poops in 6 days. He drinks tons of water, wants to eat more food and has started to drool. I think the vet was wrong in his diagnosis and that my dog is suffering from a partial obstruction way down in his system and this is why it takes so long for him to vomit. We plan on taking him to the vet first thing in the morning to insist on xrays or more tests. Is it possible my max just has an upset tummy and needs more time for the new food to work. I'd hate to cause a bad relationship with the vet but I just don't think he took the situation serious enough. Suggestions?
My baby died yesterday at the vet. She was throwing up for 24hours. When i brought her to the vet, it was too late. The obstruction was in the lower intestine. Watch what you fury babies puts in their mouths.
Just thought I'd update anyone who's interested. My boxer had those 2 incidents of incredibly violent vomiting, but after that seems to have recovered. It's business as usual here...minus any dog toys with hard plastic-encased computer chips. :)
My 13 yr old shih tzu consumed an unknown amount of mulch last week, both on Sat and Sun. Acted fine until Tues when he began vomiting and became increasingly ill (during this time he had two normal BM's, one of which contained mulch.) Felt better and then got sick again and was so lethartic, not eating, drinking and starting with diarrhea/bloody type stool. Brought him to the vet and admitted him and has been on antibiotics, med to settle stomach, xrays showed gas but not sure about obsruction. Still not eating well today, 2 days post hospitalization and they said he can come home. I asked for another xray and (why not ultrasound?) before they discharge him. No confirmation of obsruction yet, just a basic case of colitis but don't want to bring him home and then back again b/c there actually was an obsruction. Cost isn't a factor, (well it is but what can we do?) b/c we love our dog but the $$$'s are adding up. Hate to see this poor guy sick todayhe gets home and then have to go back again. Am waiting on the results of one more xray which I requested and am getting him later today but need to know some kind of diagnosis before I bring him home, don't you think???
My 4lb chihuahua started throwing up about 48 hrs ago. I took her to the vet yesterday and they were worried because she was dehydrated, not eating, not drinking, and said her intestines weren't active. they suggested all kinds of things that would run $$$$. but gave her a shot to help with the throwing up, a shot of liquid to help her dehydration, some antibiotics and said if she wasnt better today to take her back. well when i called them they actually said i could drop her off but seeing i didnt have a appointment that she would be seen WHEN they could seeher. besides that, they want to do x-rays, blood work, which we all know will add up. I tried everything they advised me to do and she isnt any better. she does have a appointment first thing in the am. my question is, has it been too long now? she isn't in pain but still isn't eating or drinking, with out me forcing her to drink. no blood anywhere. Im so worried and confused.
my dog ate part of a small stuffed aniaml...he pooped out a button eye. He has blood in his stool and was throwing up. He has since showed some serious signs of impovement. Hes eating running jumping and drinking water...were still waiting for a bowel movement...keep your fingers crossed for me!!
I have a 7 month old pug and last sundya she swallowed a small ham bone , I immediately called an emergency vet and they suggested to induce vomitting with peroxide...tried that..didn't work. I did use syrup of ipecac..she brought up everything but the bone.
She showed no signs of any problems, but I was concerned so I took her to the vet on Tuesday and had an x-ray...the bone showed in her small intestines, the vet suggested to wait it out and call her tomorrow morning..Monday , over a week later, and let her know how she was...she still has not passed it but she seems normal, eating, drinking, no sickness, vomitting, still very playful...not sure what else they will do?? Any ideas??? The vet said it was a very risky and expensive surgery and she really didn't to do it.
Hi,
My beautiful 13 y/o Golden ate a slipper leaving absolutely no evidence. Probably on the Sat night or Sunday. He did not become unwell until late Monday night. I had him at the vetson tuesday. They could not see a thing on X-ray and thought he had pancreatitis so treated him for that. He was still vomiting the next day on the thursday they suggested an ultrasound but it could not be done until lunch on the Friday. That is when they found an 11cm obstruction and operated straight away.
As this was a linear obstruction (the slipper was knitted) it had reached down to his small intestine and caused major damage. Part of his gut had to be removed and some of it has already died. Bronson fought for two days post surgery and it was too much for him and passed away on the third night. He was trying so hard and at our last cuddle I told him I knew how much he loved us but if was too much for him it was ok to go, he died that night.
I just cant help being angry that if he was ultrasounded sooner he might of been saved. And the damage would not have been so bad or would it have already been digested to far when we got there anyway??? How long does it take to get that bad??? The 2 day wait for the ultrasound would not have helped but they said it would have been the same operation.... PLEASE COULD SOMEONE HELP ME, I'm dying here wondering about it, and this has cost our family our closest friend well before his time.
Oh, and we did not know until the ultrasound Bronson had eaten anything. He had not done this for such a long time but goes to show any dog can do this at any age.
I saw the slippers as aperfect pair on the Saturday afternoon was out the Saturday night and was terribly sick in bed all day Sunday so I didnt see him and only the next night (Mon)he became ill & vomiting the vet couldnt see me til Tuesday evening at 4.30 pm. I am in so much pain and I am just trying to put this all together. There was absolutely nothing else wrong with him. Was it too late or could another more motivated lets do something now vet have made a difference or do you think the damage was done and I can rest that I did the best I could for Bronson. Thx so much I will never rest until I get some advice XX
Alexadry I called the vet on MOnday and she informed me that the dog probably passed it, but she uses pads and I've checked her stool, and did not see anything. The vet told me that she would not bother with anything further as long as she is acting fine, eating and moving bowels normally??? She told me to just let it go.
Catherine...I am so sorry for your loss!
Thank you,
Pug of Love and Alexadry so much for commenting and well, talking to me. I know we all feel the same about our friends and yes it is the most terrible pain I have felt in such a long time. I guess the hard thing is that Bronson was in perfect health, never any sickness throughout his life, no arthritis at all in his hips, he looked and still behaved like a five year old dog. Wrestling with our one year old dog everyday. Even the vet said she has never seen a Golden of his age so well and bouncy. Even the surgeon said his insides were perfect and no tumors ar any signs of ageing whatsoever.
So yes to lose him in such a way has gutted us. I just felt even more uneasy and guilty that I could have done more for him but there was no evidence of a foreign object in his vomit. We put our trust in their doctors for thorough prompt treatment and I feel that the three day wait for another approach had cost him more damage that couldnt be rectified, and I will never ever let anyone tell me sit and wait again.
He completely blocked up and never passed a thing so I guess it was pretty bad not even sloppy stools so I guess I have to tell myself that at least I did everything for him.
My husband and I had Bronson within six months of our relationship and now we have been married for fourteen years this year. I am at home with them all day everyday and mostly take them with us when we can. We took him everywhere with us and I miss his Golden head looking out my back window, and him picking the kids up from school everyday. Anyway I thank you so much for talking to me you have no idea :) knowing that someone cares is great, I think people like us have a special gene, some people just dont get it!!!
Hope that everyones puppy tummy problems turn out for the best. Miss you so much Bronson and thank you so much for all the good times.
My 6 pound toy poodle ate a full size Trader Joes Mint-A-Breath bones meant for a 50 lb dog! It is made with wheat gluten, looks like the old greenie formula! He gnawed on it for a day and barely scratched it, then today he ate it within 20 minutes,(about 10 hours ago) I didn't think he could because it was so hard. I am so scared right now that it will expand in his intestines over time and not digest like the other dogs! Does anyone know what I can do? He hasn't eaten since, but that's typical since he doesn't like hard dog food. I don't know if giving him chicken or soft food will impact him if the minty bone is in there expanding Help! Any experiecne or suggestions? He is drinking a little and can urinate. Help?
My dog recently ate a package of the cigarette bubble gum. I called the company and they do not use xylitol in their product, due to the somewhat large amount of gum, will this be able to be passed by my dog or could it become stuck, thus obstructing his bowel? He is a chocolate lab, 9 months old...he is drinking and eating food, but no sign of a bowel movement with gum...any thoughts?
Great News! Little Max is going well. He passed it, I think. The food in did not equal the food out, but it had changed to the new food he has been eating for 2 day, so unless it can make it around anything stuck in his intestines, he is good. I am amazed that he could eat that whole thing for a dog 5 times his size, and move it out. Thankfully he didn't get sick. I will never give him anything bigger than his size, even just to chew on it. He can chomp through anything quickly! Thank you, I was so worried, but he's an amazing rescue dog!
I can't find the bitter spray bottle cap and am suspecting that my 11mths old toy poodle has swallowed it. He ate his dinner last night but appetite was not great. He's still drinking lots of water and begging for treats. I'm hoping that he will pass it out soon or the cap will appear some how soon!
I have a 12 yr. old miniature dachshund. She was trembling, panting and had a warm moist nose and not acting her normal self so I took her to the vet yesterday. Her temperature was normal. They took an X-ray and found her stomach was full of food and her intestinal tract had gas and feces in it. The vet thinks that her back is causing the pain which is making it painful for her to defecate. She is eating and drinking normally. When she poops it is a loose stool. She is on painkillers and steroids for her back. I do not know if she has a blockage because I cannot afford the barium tests. I don't know what to do. I am afraid that if she doesn't get better in the next couple of days, I will be forced to put her down.
Update: I accidently gave my doxie a double dose of pain meds one night and the next day she had a HUGE poop! I guess it must have been her back giving her pain....she is wagging her tail and back to normal! Yea!
My 4 year old Boston started getting sick on Monday. She vomited about 10 times through the night. After inconclusive x-rays of her gi they sent her home with us. She ate that night but vomited ecerything up in the morning. Took her back to vet and she underwent exploratory surgery where they found mostly carpet in her stomach that started to trail down in her intestine. She was not doing well after surgery so they took her to the overnight clinic. They have had her since friday and we picked her up last night because the the vet thought she might finally eat after a good nights sleep.
She lasted about 4 hours of unrestfull sleep while regurgitating digested blood every hour so we rushed her back in at 2am.
They have tested for infection and there is none but she has been very lethargic and regurgitating every hour still for the past 16 hours... They may do another exploratory surgery tomorrow because they just can't figure out why she isn't improving. The surgery was Thursday afternoon and it's now Sunday afternoon.
Any advice, thoughts, possible reasons? Is my best friend going to be ok?
Our 4 1/2 yr old whippet mix started vomitting a week ago, vomited about 6 to 7 times within a 24 hour period, thought at first it was just bc she had too much to eat, until she kept it up. I took food away for 24 hours sat then sun intorduced rice only then slowly added her food. She was ok until the following thurs where since then now today being sat has vomited once a day after eating. Took her to the vet today and they did xrays and said that there possibly could be an obstruction in her intestines. She is pooping just fine and wants to eat but just cant keep it down but why the break from sun to thurs with no vomiting? Of course they want to do surgery right away, is this necessary? Should we wait to see if something passes? ( she is not the type to do too much chewing, she does grab stuff off the counter when we are not home and eat whatever it is thats up there, sometimes including the wrapper but hasnt done so recently.
They said they were a little concerned with the xrays, that there could possibly be something in there but wasnt 100% The weird thing is that I have been giving her brown rice and boiled chicken all day today( no vomiting) and thats how i started the week out last week and slowly added food after only a day. We will be calling our reg vet tomorrow, we were at the er vet last night with her because thats what they told us to do. She pooped this morning a little tiny poop not sure if thats because she has had nothing in her tummy from yesterday, but we will be monitoring that closely and are looking to see if anything has come through (yuck!)I appreciate your feedback!
My dog ate 3 ears of cooked and cooled corn on the cob yesterday around 6:00. I don't know if he even chewed them he ate them so fast. Today he has had 4 poops and didn't appear straining (although they were full of corn) and 20 min ago he threw up some cob (and a paper towel he ate today at noon). Is it normal for a dog to throw up something he ate 22 hours ago? He seems fine today - went to dog park this morning and played now is just chillin' on his dog bed. If he's pooped and threw up some, do you think he will be just fine? Holiday weekend and all...no vet other than emergency ($$$$$$) is open. thanks.
Well, I think (hope!) we are out of the woods with my Choc Lab (1 1/2yr) who ate the corn cobs. This morning he threw up 5 separate times and all were corn cobs!! He ate them Sat around 6:00 and today is MONDAY. I had no idea that dogs would "hold" on to something that long. So glad it all (hope) came out! 2 poops today with corn and cob. He seems just fine. Dumb Dog! I wish he would learn from his mistakes! 2 trips to the vet in his short life for eating chocolate and an entire choc cake. He eats paper towels/napkins like they are candy when he finds a random one. He's eaten a night light bulb, silly bands, hair ties, and the most disgusting of all - a half of a dead squirrel. Yes, half. I stepped on the other half to pull it out of his mouth. I love my dog. >:/ Is it JUST chocolate labs that feel like they have to eat everything! He acts likes he's starving 24/7 LOL. Thanks everyone for your well wishes. Love this blog.
get a remote training collar and when he jumps on tha table to steal sometimes, zap him... he won't do it many times.
i have a shihtzu 2 months old puppy she is sick having a fever and vomiting for 2 days just gave her a home remedy for a while not yet consulting to vet, i jsut want to known if its fine for her a baby medicine for fever?
my dog ate a lot of used tampons 4 days ago i took him straight to the vets and he was given antibiotics he got sick 3 times that day but since has been fine eating drinking and going to the toilet and has passed a couple but today he got sick and there was a whole tampon that came out after four days after he got sick he was fine he went to the toilet and pooed another one out but then he ate all his food had a good drink and is running around like nothing happened should i be worried
This is a very popular post!! I have read all the responses and have a question about my American cocker spaniel, Charlie, who ate a lamb rib bone out of the trash 3 nights ago. We took him to the vet immediately and x-rays showed that the bone (in 2 pieces) was in his stomach. He wasn't vomiting or lethargic, so the vet instructed us to wait to see if the bones passed. It's been three days and we haven't seen any bones in his stool. He is still acting fine, using the bathroom fine, and no sign of problems. But I am concerned. How long before I know that all is well--especially since I haven't seen any indication he passed the bones? I live in a Spanish speaking country and my English-speaking vet is on vacation. So to be able to get an answer in English is much appreciated!
My lab who is ten months old grabbed a shiskabob off the plate and ran with it before i could get her. it was raw meat had not even made it to the barbeque yet..... She devoured it with most of the stick also .... i am worried that she will not pass the stick and it may puncture her bowel i did like you said and gave her a couple pieces of bread what are your thoughts on this alexadry thank you
My large 6 month old Pomeranian ate some corn cob last night and Internet searches tell me it's not good. He is being normal and had 3 bowel movements this morning, the last of which was about 85% corn cob bits.
He had thrown up yellow bile and bubbles yesterday morning (about 14 hours BEFORE the forbidden cob consumption) so I had made some plain white rice for him. This morning i gave him a huge serving of the rice with a bit of yogurt. I think the rice helped push things along.
He is being a little calmer than normal but still playful with his toys and ppl he normally won't play with. He is just friendlier to ppl and dogs today but just as barky at home at strange noises. It's also record highs today, really hot. Can his subdued behavior be attributed to the heat? Or should I get him checked out?
He will eat food, but since a really long walk and meeting a new, large friend at the park he doesn't want water. So this not drinking thing is concerning me. What is recommended? is he I. The clear? No vomiting or diarrhea. The earlier vomit was before the cob incident and coincidental, but probably expected from all the crap he finds and eats.
Also, I was told I can muzzle him on our walks so he doesn't eat as much garbage. Is this a good idea?
I spoke too soon. My pom pup had a tiny bit of diarrhea tonight. Can feeding him white rice do that?
Should I be concerned about blockages now?
Our 17 week old, 48 lb. st. bernard ate 1/2 a corn cob our toddler threw off of her high chair.. not quite sure whether to wait for vomiting or just call the vet!
I just got a Min Pin puppy a couple of weeks ago, and she received her 1st series of shots on Thursday in the left hip. Yesterday I noticed something different about her back legs when I took her outside to the bathroom. I came home from work and took her out of the cage to take outside and noticed her tummy seemed bloated. At first I thought she may be constipated, but she was finally able to poop. I can't pin point it, but something seems wrong with her back legs, like she is uncomfortable. She has a noticable difference in her activity level, but her appetite seems the same and she is pooping. At first I thought maybe it could be discomfort from the shot, but she is the same this morning and I am starting to get worried. I read the article above on dogs with a ''vacuum cleaner'' reputation. She chews on a lot of things and she has gotten a hold of my other dogs rawhide bones (which I see now I need to make sure does not happen), so I got to thinking maybe she may have an intestinal blockage. Would this be a symptom? What else should I look for?
Hi there. Today I noticed that my 4 year old female Boston Terrier has been straining to defecate. She tries and tries (we counted 9 attempts within 20 minutes) to defecate, but nothing comes out but drops of clear water. Other than this, she is acting fine. Normal, aggressive appetite for both food and water, playful, looks a bit pudgy but nothing too unusual (she's been putting on a little weight in the past few months). She does have access to a rug which we've caught her tearing up. She pulls the string out and then spits them out (never swallows them that we see, but there have been strings in her feces before). Should we be concerned? I gave her half a slice of bread and canned pumpkin today, so hopefully that'll help. If it doesn't, should we see a vet or wait and see since she's acting normally? Does this sound like an obstruction to you? Thanks in advance for your help!
My mom's dog seems to have a lot of these symptons, EXCEPT vomiting and diarrhea. This has been going on for a while. Is it an obstruction, or might it be something else? He's about 9-12 years old, a medium-large mutt, and has never really been much of a chewer, except on rare instances. Any ideas? He may be put down due to lack of funds to fix such a problem. I don't want this to happen, and would be greatful of any help that may prevent it.
Strange one this problem. Our Border Terrier has suddenly gone off food, she cannot defacate and when out for a walk and after attempting defacation she will not walk far, she sits or lays down.
We took her to the vet and he gave he several emenas plus rear end probing to clear and hard stools. Eventually she was xrayed and a lump was seen in her intestinal area. When they operated they found her gut wa a sort of tangled 'S' shape surrounded by fat. Neither the vet nor his colleaugue has ever seen anything like this before - anybody heard of it?
My dog started with diahrear, 2 weeks ago, been eating the food recommended by the vet chix rice pro biotic stuff. Drinking and eating stopped 3 days ago. He has cushings disease, but he got into the trash there was a chicken in there. How can I tell if its a blockage and not the cushings and he is just crashing from that? He is 18 years old.
My dog ate a couple napkins and they got stuck in his small intestine we took him to two different vets but they said he was okay just needed sleep and time 3 weeks passed and we got a call from the vet and they told us he needed surgery he lost 10 pounds from not eating. He died on the surgery table.why did they wait so long to tell us? Why?
Have you any ideas what causes some dogs to have the desire to eat crazy things!? I have kept dogs before, but never had one like my current one. She is a very fussy eater and often will go days without eating her dog food. I have changed the brands and tried wet and dry. I never give in so eventually she gets hungry and eats it. When we are out on walks she will eat anything - the more dangerous the better. I live in Thailand and there are lots of street dogs that wander about, and even these skinny hungry dogs wont eat what she does. Here is a list - large cooked fish bones - a cooked chicken neck, a squashed toad with maggots, rocks, Polystyrene, branches, elastic bands, lots of leaves, extra spicy week old curry, cat vomit, dead and very smelly bird, etc etc.
I don't know where she finds them. Once she has the thing i have no chance to stop her eating it, unless its a big thing. Even on the lead, she just swallows it in a second. Off the lead she runs off and hides and comes back home on her own later. I have never encourages this behavior, never chased her, shouted at her, or made any fuss. I just say NO and take the thing and forget it.
So my question is why is she doing this. She nearly chocked once on the chicken neck and her tongue was blue. I had to pull the thing out of her throat. She usually vomits the rotten stuff up when she gets back home and usually this is on our one expensive rug! Thanks
My poor little foster dog chewed off the ends of one of those ham bones they sell wrapped in plastic at the grocery store. She's a 45-lb. pitbull mix (on the smaller side), but I didn't realize how brittle those things are. Since then (last night), I've been worried about her (reading all over the Internet the dangers of cooked bone)... She's been drinking a lot of water, eating all her food and going on walks, but her stools are loose (no blood) and she seems sleepier than usual. We've fed her bread and cotton balls, so far. Planning on taking her to the clinic if things worsen, but AHHH -- what's the normal prognosis for this? We love this dog and want to adopt it ASAP, and can't stand the thought of losing her.
my puppy is in the hospital right now. she was puking..had no energy..stopped eating..soon enough she wasnt drinking and peed blood. the vet pulled 2 pennies out of her behind..and an xray showed alot more. she had a blood transfusion last night and surgery afterwards. she seems to have taken okay to both..despite some issues that came up with her immune system. she had all kinds of change in her but the worst was she had 18 pennies which contain zinc. the zinc affected her pancreas and now she has to stay in the ICU to make sure she heals okay and that her liver and kidneys aren't infected. shes 12 lbs..shes a year old. shes just a baby and im praying everything will be okay. i miss her and i just want her home.
is there anywhere on the internet with stories of other people whos pets have had zinc poisoning and had to haev surgery? (uplifting stories preferably..)
im so lost right now..shes my baby.
if your dog ever starts puking bile..and you haven't noticed her eat anything. just get the xray. maybe if i had caught this earlier the zinc wouldnt have affected her so bad and she could be home already.
my vet bill is going to be $6300. nevermind the $300 i'd already spent on her this week for antihistamines and other medicine before all this.
take care of your babies..dont leave change anywhere. something so small can harm them so much. sorry im just really depressed right now. i need my boo.
My lab had really bad diarrhea yesterday and threw up any water he drank. He usually wants to eat 24/7 and yesterday and today he wont even go near food. He has been acting like he needs to go "number 2" aleast once every hour. When I go out with him he literally shoots blood out of his behind and nothing else. We took him to the vet earlier today, before I noticed that he seemed constipated, and she did a test for whipworm that came out negative yet she still treated him for that. I have only given him one dose so far and it doesnt seem to help at all. What else could it be? Also, if it helps, I noticed this all started after I gave him a raw hide bone that we noticed he ate really fast. HELLPPP please!!!
Hi all,
My belgian malinois has been vomiting up her food a few minutes after her meal for about 2 and a half days now.
She still defecates pretty regularly, about twice a day.
Does this sound like an obstruction? I intend to take her to the vet tomorrow morning but I wonder if I should go to him more urgently than that?
Thanks
My Pomeranian got to a corn cob yesterday and ate like half of it. Today she vomited some. I am worried if she will be okay. Is vomiting pieces of corn cob good or bad?
Hi there. Great article.
One question. . . my dog Benny (15lb terrier) ate a chunk of bark/stick about 36 hours ago--maybe a bit more. I tried hard to get it out of his mouth, but he chewed a couple times and it was down the hatch. Since then, he's eaten all of his meals (3 of them) enthusiastically, and I included some bread and extra water. He seems generally like himself--excitable at times and chill others. . . which is generally normal for an 8month old puppy.
He's had at least three bowel movements since then, all of them normal, none of them strained. . . or including pieces of sticks/bark. Zero vomiting. Zero blood anywhere.
I guess my question is. . . when are we out of the woods? When will I be sure that something didn't splinter off and hurt him or cause intestinal bleeding or something? Are these things generally rapid-onset?
So far so good, but I'm still worried, because, well, I'm a worrier.
Hi,great page which i have found whilst desperately looking through the net.I have a 2yr old French Bulldog which is having problems. She started to get in pain 3 weeks ago, crying about once a day and shaking for no apparent reason and if she jumped, which after a few trips to the vet followed by some xrays it turned out she had a compacted bowel. These results were discovered after about 12 days. She had been going to the toilet but less and by the time we had the xrays she didnt go for 3 days. The vet gave us a laxative and some rectal gel to be applied daily.Previous to the problems we had changed her diet to include pasta and rice with her tinned food as she was having allergic reactions of itching to the kindle and she also ate a heap of pork rib bones. Her stools where very dry before the full on constipation also.We have been giving her the laxative, gel and also feeding here pumpkin and only wet tinned dog food to help her go.She has been going on average once a day (normal 3-4) around mid morning but is acting very depressed and by night time she is sat hiding in a corner ,sometimes crying with her head looking up at the ceiling. Its like she is trying not to go to the toilet. We have obviously been taking her out on the field by the house to try and get her to go a few times a day and when she is in pain also. These attacks of pain can last 15mins to 2hours.We feel so helpless and unfortunately we are expats living in Tunisia and the vets her dont seem very helpful along with a bit of a language barrier. We feel so helpless and when she is in pain if i go near here she just starts screaming. In the morning we can wake to her crying and shaking then she can be ok all day (although down) then by the night on agony then fine a bit later, although the last few days it seems to be more bouts of pain.We are so worried and wondered if you had any advice please. How long can a blockage take to clear that has built up over 2 weeks? We though a couple of days. Although she is going once a day (which isnt much but she is only on 2 small meals of wet food and pumpkin)is it possible that it is a partial blockage ? Im starting to think she is scared of going!!There is nothing obvious to a blockage on the xrays, just a full bowel! Thanks in advice for any advice.
My black lab ate a small portion of my underwear. Te first time was four weeks ago and je seems normal. He has thrown up a couple times but it is not un common for him. He did it again and ate a small portion of my underwear. He is acting normal with normal stool. Should I be concerned? What should I do?
Hi there, my chihuahua dog is a year old and on thursday afternoon he started throwing up his food, we just thought that the food had given a tummy ache and he was still very energetic but Friday morning he didn't get up to say bye to me (which Is a big deal) and he didn't eat the whole day, and was vomiting and had diarrhea but no blood, on Saturday we took him to the vet and he gave him an antibiotic shot and something to control his diarrhea, it's Sunday morning and he's still not eating he's down to 3 pounds he's lethargic he's been throwing up and hisbreathing is dragging idk what to do hes my bestfriend...
My dog swallowed a hole bone a week ago, now she is vomiting an is smells like feces. What do I do?
I have a Shiba Inu who is more fox than dog, and a week ago he swallowed a chicken wing whole. I did my internet research and kept an eye on him, and nothing seems to be wrong so far ( I gave him bread, check to make sure his stomach isn't distended and he has been poohing regularly) but I haven't noticed a bone yet, so should I be worried?
My American bulldog throw up a sock this morning. We do not know were she got it from because it is not my husbands or mine. I called the vet they told me to watch and make sure she is eating, drinking, peeing and pooping okay. She is however she has been throwing up still. The vet doesn't have an opening until tomorrow afternoon. Sure
I take her to another vet or emergency clinic?
My moms pup was 2yrs old i woke up yesterday tn a weired noise wheni went to get up i steped in vomet. as i tried to get to the light i steped in more. when i finaly got it on i saw it all over the carpet. i figured she had an upset stomach. then i noticed take when she tried to potty all that would come out was blood. i told my mom take her to the vet over and over but she started to look a a lil better the blood had stoped for about 1hr to 2 the it started again. i told my mom i want to pin her for the night so she wouldent bleed on the kids blankets and we wouldnt have to step in any of it in the morning. my mom gave her a big soft blanket and we set her up in the corner. today at 6:05am our coffee alarm went off i got up to check her and she was gone.we dont know what caused it but if ur dog seems fine one sec andd then is vomiting everywhere the next take her in and have her seen
Hi Alexa, as disgusting (and unfortunately common) as it is, my 7yr old Lab-Chow mix has ingested a tampon. At this time, it was around noon yesterday. He had eaten previously and was able to defecate, but later on in the day, he did his usual routine and was unable to produce a bowel movement. I gave him the night and called the vet this morning and he suggested 2 tablespoons of Mineral Oil soaked in bread to help him pass it. Around 4 this afternoon, he was finally able to make a movement, but I saw no tampon in his stool. He has his appetite, and is still his playful self. Do you think we are in the clear now? I plan on keeping an eye on him throughout the night and calling the vet with an update in the morning. Any advice will help. He is actually my mother's dog who I took over due to her having a stroke, so I'm a little under prepared financially, and mentally for these emergencies! Thank you!
We have puppy who is four months old and he loves to chew so we bought him a Greenies bone... he was doing quite well with it then suddenly swallowed it! I have been looking all over the internet and asking all kinds of people for advice what to do... it has only been four hours ago and he has eaten since then and drank... no vomiting yet... I am curious if this is something we should bring to a vets attention or just "wait it out"? I am very concerned for little Winston... he is a pug and they are known to gulp things... please help!!!! =(
He threw up a bit ago all undigested kibble he had after the treat I am sooo worried...
Just a caution in case our story helps any dog owners and/or saves a dog's life. Dyna our 7 year old standard dachshund with a vacuum cleaner appetite suddenly refused to eat one morning. She vomited her undigested dinner from the night before so we took her to the vet. Xrays showed no blockage only gas pockets in her bowel. 2 days later we spent the night up with her whilst she whined and yelped in agony (We now know this was the time her bowel ruptured). Back to the vet where we asked for exploratory surgery to see what was wrong. They insisted it was "haemorragic gastroenteritis". She was straining to poop and all she managed was runny, bloody muck. The next 5 days were spent in and out of the vets, but mostly at the vets being observed and getting pain relief.
Finally one week after refusing to eat they recommended surgery and found a dish cloth stuck in her bowel, the bowel had perforated and peritonitis was all through her belly. She came through the surgery but one week of not eating had reduced the protein count in her blood to the extent that she couldn't heal. She never came home again. The following two days she spent at the vet not improving. A drain was inserted into her wound and peritonitis was back. Emergency surgery was again performed 10 days after she initially got sick but her organs had already failed and she was euthenised.
We are still devasted and angry at our vet for not operating sooner and taking the cautious approach with her. I didn't find this blog until it was too late to help her. Please insist and speak for your pet as they cannot. We would probably still have Dyna if we insisted on surgery on day 3. Now all we have is her ashes in a box.
I worked at a vet clinic and did an x-ray on a yellow lab who ate a tv remote control. The x-ray showed the batteries and the remote in his stomach. We ended up doing surgery to remove them before they did any further harm. The yellow lab lived and went back to his business of packing things around and chewing them up
Hi Alex,
My family have been struggling with our German Shepherd's Diarrhea for a few months now. Daisy is almost 10 years old and otherwise very healthy. (good weight, active, no fever, good appetite, no vomiting, etc) One day out of the blue it started up and the Vet gave her a prescription of Metrodiazonale (sp?) for Clostridium. After the prescription ran out, it came back and we did 2 more 10 day cycles of it with the same results. After the last round of Metro I went food-defensive on Daisy with Pumpkin, Rice, eggs and Chicken. She went 10 days after the last prescription before the symptoms returned, and I'm having back-and-forth loose poop/firm poop results with this diet.
One thing I've noticed, it seems like any dry/hard food causes liqui-poop. Eggs, Chicken, Rice, Pumpkin give decent results, but a few hours after I give her kibble or even dog biscuits, the liquid poop returns.
I know about the Clostridium spores, and their resistance to everything, but I can't shake the thought that Daisy might have a partial obstruction towards the end of the digestive tract.
She has ample access to kids toys, "squeakers" after she "kills" her own toys, and anything in our back yard.
And if it is really Clostridium, why would she be fine for 9 years and then have chronic Clostridium ( or whatever it's called)
My own vet suggested a Colonoscopy, but this costs well over what we can afford. What do you suggest?
I know that the Metrodiazonale would stop the Diarrhea completely, and enable her to eat dry food again, but is this just masking something? Should we try x-rays? Ultrasound? Thank you for any ideas or suggestions,
DaveS
Hello,
I have a one year old pomeranian who I'm sure ate some chicken bones yesterday. I(Monday) came home from work and she had gotten into the trash. There was nothing left! It is now Tuesday evening she's eating, drinking, playing ect but she seems to be panting a lot. (Though I've noticed the ppanting before, I'm highly paranoid) and she had loose stool the past two days. I doubt she would swallow them hole cause she chews everything but ugh I jst don't know what to do. Idea please? I need to avdoin the vet as mch as possible .
15lb 12year old maltese. ate a good sized meal of his regular food. then chewed up a denta type bone. a few hours later throwing up whitish foamy puke. along with this he developed a "cough". stomach/intestines making a gas bubble sound off and on. dog is very uncomfortable and tried to drink some water only to let it run and cough back out of his mouth. love you for helping people out on here.
i wrote you at about 3am with a vet visit planned later that morning. 9am he vomited again and i found 3 little pieces of the bone. He came back inside and drank a bunch of water and seemed comfortable but wore out. i checked his gums again and as always they were pink and turned white when pressed on. He slept all day and then woke up and was wanting to eat and go for a walk!!! Back to his old self. Thanks for the help.
hi, my 1 year old pug swallowed about 3 inches of rawhide treat almost 2 days ago. he's eating, drinking, pooping and acting fine but there is no sign of the treat, what action should i take? if there was a blockage would there have been symptoms by now?
my dog had an obstruction in the colon and did not eat or pass stools for the last one week.......my vet sugessted iv fluids....now he is eating OK and the stools are almost bak to normal....so do you think there is more cause for worry???
Hi, I don't know what's wrong with my little man puppy and set up an appointment to see the vet because my little man was acting "funny" He's eating, pooping, peeing, sleeping and everything else, but sometimes he'll shake and cry for what appears to be no reason. I assumed it was a blockage but every time I get ready to take him to the vet, he'll suddenly bounce back and start playing and acting like his normal goofy self again.
I was gone overnight visiting my aunt and when I got home Remi was NOT his normal perky self. He normally jumps off the bed and couch, even though I have steps for both he likes to jump where he wants to jump which scares me to pieces but I truly cannot stop him. Initially I thought maybe he had pulled a muscle but then one day when I picked him up he cried and after he pooped he cried and shook for about 45 mins. It began two weeks ago this Saturday coming up. I had an appt last Saturday but then he was literally eating, pooping, playing, EVERYTHING like normal so I cancelled the vet appt because I just had a miscarriage and missed a week of work and now I'm single and the vet bill would have killed me. Since he seemed okay the vet tech said I should just monitor him and make another appointment if I needed to. Monday, Tues, Wed he was fine and then WHAM! Today, Thurs, he starts acting all funny again and he's shaking after pottying. He's crying and won't jump down off my bed. He even peed in the house, which he NEVER does! I'm gonna have to take him to the vet but I thought the worst was over because we had so many days without incidence, so I paid a few extra bills. In a few weeks when I've gotten everything paid up, I'm afraid that it will be too late but they said at the vet's office that if he's eating, pooping, peeing, sleeping, drinking, etc, that he probably doesn't have an obstruction. *sigh* If money wasn't tight because of missing work I'd just do it and not think about it but we need lights and I need to make sure that he's okay. My dogs are like my kids. I just don't know what to think or do. Please help.
Oh, yeah, Remi's is four years old, or so, and he weighs about five pounds. Those might be important things to know about him. I've caught his sister and him in the trash eating foil, tampons, maxipads (sorry, I know it's gross guys but they'll eat that junk), gum, paper towels, paper bags, string, almost anything. I am SO careful to pick everything up around the apartment, in fact all my trash cans are covered and I lock them in my bedroom when I leave to make sure that they don't get into things while I'm away. I gave him pumpkin because I saw online that it's good for helping dogs have softer stools. I'll maybe try the bread and see if that helps. He's been fine for a few days but that could be because he was eating the pumpkin in his food and then I ran our Monday and he was fine so I didn't open another can. Perhaps the pumpkin was helping and not having it made it worse.
Oh, yeah, and I've been fishing around in his poop, sorry but he's my kid and I'd do it if he was a child if necessary, and haven't found anything untoward. I did find that ONE of my dogs, I have four, had somehow fished out a maxipad (it was clean) and ate it and had pooped it out. It seemed that that was all he/she had pooped out though, which was odd.
Today we had to put our dog down, he ate string somehow and it got tied up in his intestinal tract. I have four more very expensive, very dear to my heart dogs, how can I tell if they have done the same thing and how to get to it before it maybe kills my other babies?
My 10 year old hunting dog used to eat everything in sight. As a rule I only fed him dry food though. It's been a month now and he refuses food, drinks a lot of water. took him to the vet twice. he ran all sort of blood tests for her, and said there is nothing wrong with her. However when he touches her tummy she wince back. The vet said her intestines are swollen. She is practically living on special paste that the vet gave me, which I have to paste to the roof of her mouth. Sometimes she eats a piece or two of boiled chicken. but when I think that ok she is eating now, she stops all over again. Her stools (hardly) are black and liquidy. I really think she has an obstruction. what do u think? ps she still looks pretty healthy, I mean runs after the cat etcs, but I dont know for long this could go on. She lost a lot of weight of course.
Christine, I'm obviously NOT a Vet but I'd DEFINITELY be taking my dog to another vet for a second opinion. It could be something serious and if after a month he's not getting better after a month and is living on what sounds like NutriCal or NutriStat then that's not a good thing. I'd rather get a second opinion and have that vet say to let things go than to NOT get one and lose you furbaby.
Sooo, I took Remi to the vet today and they did xrays and said he had an enlarged colon but other than that he seems to be good. She said that his food is moving through and that she can't see any obstructions but that the enlarged colon and constipation could be causing the problem. He's been good for a few days now but I decided to take him to the vet just for piece of mind. I'm SOOO glad that my sugar baby is okay!!! Thanks for the page, it had lots of good advice.
My bulldog / boxer mix jumped over the kitchen gate today and had a lunch of cotton make up remover pads.. He ate the entire bag of them. I came home from work and discovered this.. Do I wait and see if it passes or rush him to the vet right away? It has been well over 5 hours since he's eaten them, so I don't think vomiting will be the solution..
Help!!??
Hi, sorry if this is a repetitive question but my 5 month old pup swallowed a whole cooked chicken drumstick about two weeks ago. We've been watching him closely since then but he hasn't been out of sorts at all and we weren't too worried thinking it would have passed thru. The last couple of days he's had sloppy poos (and loads of killer farts!), and today he's had diarrhea with bright-coloured blood and mucus in it. He's also straining to poo. No other symptoms though, he doesn't seem to be in pain (even if i poke his belly), he's not lethargic or vomiting, and he's as food-focused as ever. Could the poo situation be from the chicken bone stuck somewhere? The other morning i also found a bunch of fibrous woodchip sort of material in his poo. He also spent a couple of days on a friends farm recently where he ate as much chicken poo, rabbit poo, and unidentified animal poo as he could possibly sneak in (among other things i'm sure). Should i continue to wait and see? Would bread/mash potatoes etc be a good precaution?
I have a mini poodle shes 5 pounds and shes been having diarrhea for about 2 days i thought it was caused cause she ate a lil too much yogurt drop treats shes always been a picky eater but she didn't eat at all for those 2 days on the 3rd day she ate a lil and her poop was a lil softer so i figured she got better, today she actually threw up so i took her to the vet and she said she felt something in her intestine and that she should x-ray her just in case she has something inside... i dont have the money to be paying $260 on an x-ray is there anything else that could be done?
Ok I just finished reading your other page http://alexadry.hubpages.com/hub/Causes-of-blood-i and it has been really helpful! I think the blood might be from giardia or some other tummy thing (he does eat a lot of crap!), not the chicken wing. Going to get a stool test done now! Thanks heaps :)
I have a Mini Bull terrier who is the definition of Hoover. we've stopped giving her Rawhides which we never left with her unattended, and only let her play with toys while were watching. weve been to the vet several times this month for different things.. but lately it has been for soft stool that wont seem to go away. She eats drinks plays and is her normal self. The first visit to the doctor they said she had a lot of bacteria in her stool and gave her antibiotics, about a month later she now has an ear infection. and as soon as we brought her from the vet she started having soft stool again. now 24 hours later its already better. Reading all of these posts is just making me think that perhaps she does have something blocking her intestines? I made an appt to take her again she they mentioned they wanted to do a stomach ultrasound.. HELP
My 13 month old dachshund eats toys, sticks, etc.
Last week, he got into our wood chips/bark in the yeard (I didn't know at the time) and the next morning became very sick. Continued vomiting for the bulk of the morning and afternoon, until I took him to the vet. (Thursday) They gave him a couple of shots to calm the GI and metronidazole. He threw up on the way home and one more time that evening. The next day he seemed a bit better, but not great. Very lethargic and uninterested in food, but I decided to let things 'shake out'. Every time I gave him the metronidazole, he seemed miserable. He stomach is not distended nor does he seem like he's in pain when I rub it, but he keeps stretching out his body a lot.
I returned him to the vet on Saturday. They did the barium test, xrays and bloodwork. Bloodwork was fine and xrays showed inflammation in the intestinal tract.
Later in the day he passed a piece of wood chip in his stool, so we figured he was going to be ok. But his eating hasn't greatly increased and still he is not back to his usual obnoxiousness. The vet felt that maybe there was just a lot of irritation.....
The following Thursday, he was doing a bit better and ate a good breakfast and had a bowel movement. I thought we were out of the woods, but that evening, he drank a bunch of water, then threw up everything from the morning, and would not eat any dinner. I got the metronidazole down him that night, then the next morning (today) he wouldn't eat at all again. Got a few pieces of scrambled egg down him this afternoon and then he refused dinner again tonight. Called the vet and am taking him in the morning, but she said to get some Pepto down him and some calories, too. He started off at 17 lbs., but now has probably lost close to 2 lbs. I feel like I'm more worried than my vet and after reading all of these.....I'm VERY concerned about this little boy........
Please advise??!!!
Thank you!!!!
Hi,
We have a 2 1/2 year old Rhodesian/boxer mix. He has an autoimune disease called thrombocytopenia. His name is Reese and he is the most amazing animal. Three weeks ago Reese has a serious relapse. Just as the medicine was working and things were finally getting better he ate a tennis ball. Whole. Due to his imune system being terribly weakens our vet and the internal specialist do not want to operate. They feel he much to much of a high risk. He is eating, drinking and going to the bathroom as normal. Can a dog throw the ball back up?
My husband and I are scared and worried. We are praying a miracle happends because our 100 pound Reese is the best boy anyone could ask for.
I have a 9 year old hound mix that until last Friday has not ever been seriously ill. I came home from work and noticed that she was very lethargic. She had gotten sick in my bedroom and had had an episode of diarhhea. I took her to the vet on Saturday and he diagnosed her with a gastrointestinal bug saying that she would most likely be eating by Monday. Monday came and went and she was still not eating and getting weaker by the day. I called the vet again on Wed morning and was told to bring her back in. This time my dog saw a different vet who was very thorough in her questioning. She decided that it was important to do an xray to see if there might be a blockage. Sure enough the xray revealed foreign material in 2 places in Cricket's stomach. The decision was made to keep her at the animal clinic so that they could give her an enema that night and repeat the xray in the am, followed by a barium xray. Cricket will most likely need surgery to remove what she ingested.
hi, this afternoon my 9 month old siberian husky got into the plastic wrap, which you wrap around flower pots, and he ate it. he has been puking up water and his food, he isnt walking right, and he has diarrhea. he is our baby, and we are very scared! if anything happened to him we would be heartbroken. we cant get to a vet this late. does anybody know what we can do please!
SLCpretty: I would find a 24 hour emergency animal hospital asap. I hope your husky gets better.
Hi, My dog ate a piece of Kong bone about 1 year ago. He threw up some pieces about a month or two later and was fine, but yesterday he threw up all day and eventually another piece of it came out. I took him to the vet multiply times yesterday and they said the only way to see if there are still pieces in there is to run a barium treatment that is about $500 Then, possibly surgery. I took him home to think about it and he is still very sleepy and threw up twice last night. Should I take him in? Is that a normal price for the barium treatment? What will happen? Sorry, I am really freaked out...
I think my dog ate a pair of my underwear three nights ago. This has happened before a few times and she just throws them up within a couple days. This time, though, she hasn't thrown them up and she has a ton of really bad gas. No vomiting, no loss of appetite. Some small amounts of diarrhea. Until this afternoon when she vomited a tiny bit. She is an 85lb Chesapeake bay retriever who is not in distress and doesn't mind me messing with her belly.
From what I have read here, it sounds like there is a possibility of partial obstruction. So, today I gave her some canned pumpkin and some mashed potatoes. Tomorrow, she goes to the vet. Would a pair of underwear show up on xray? Is there anything more I should be doing right now before she goes to the vet tomorrow?
Thanks!
Update on Cricket. Cricket did have to have surgery. She not only swallowed a necklace, but yards of material were found in her intestines. She developed necrosis on her intestines and the vet had to do repair work as well. This was done on Thursday and today, Monday, she is still not ready to come home as she is still running a low-grade fever. The vet said that considering all, she is doing extremely well.
I have a 4 and a half month old weimaraner puppy who is suspected of eating a small plastic sandwich bag whilst out on a walk 3 days ago, yesterday she started vomiting after her tea and also after this morning’s breakfast, but still seems to be full of energy, and her poo seems regular and firm although no sign of the plastic bag,
Am I worrying needlessly or should I get her to a vet
My dog won't stop passing
Out! I am playing with her then she just collapses on the floor
For like one minute! I am very worried if this could be fatal! Please reply asap!
I am so sorry for anyone that have lost their beloved pets, I am one also. We lost our beautiful yellow Lab 10 days ago. She ate plastic and tinfoil, had 3 blockages, ended up with 6 incisions in her intestines and stomach, complications with suture fabric and needed a second surgery . Surgery again to fix the 6 incisions that caused 6 blockages. She ate objects before and was always OK, I thought this time she would be fine again. Please, never, ever think it will pass. By the time she vomited and became sick it was too late. I am consumed with guilt and heartbroken. She was only 6 years old. I wish I could bring my baby back.
I took my dog to the vet and they said they would watch her
For tonight. They said it is probably a heart disease. :(
Hi Alexadry,
what a heart-warming, heart-breaking but fabulously informative site! I thank you in advance for what i have learned and in anticipation for any help you may be able to offer me over my poorly Husky Nina!
At 11 she has already battled and won agains mammory and ovarian cancers. She has always had a wobble when she walks and through tests thats the conclusion is a neurolgical problem. That said she is usually happy and hungry all the time :-)
the last few days she hasnt eaten nor pooed! She is known to eat socks, knickers, shoes, cat litter and go through the rubbish! Not good i know but i always try my best to remove and secure areas before i leave the house.
I have just moved house (2nd day in new place) and at first thought it could be a readjustment to new surroundings but in hindsight ithink she may have eaten something again that isnt shifting! Cat litter as a rule is natural soft organic wood pellets kind of stuff??? It turns to a fine dust! But last days in house i had already moved my sacks of dog and cat supplies and had to purchase some grey gravelly stuff from local shop! Could this be a problem? The other possibility is a flip flop thong from a few weeks ago that i have not yet found!! i have 2 other chewers (only when left together! i honestly think they dare each other) and i daily inspect ALL ablutions with gloves as i do poo patrol but no purple flip flop thong!
today is saturday and my vets are a charity and not willing to do much til monday and only if i have relevant paperwork.! I havent yet got new id for new home!!! I dont know what to do as i dont have funds nor credit til later in the month again due to move.
I have give her pancake syrup on gums also a couple of spoons olive oil to help motion. She drinks water but she wont eat. I am in the uk and cant source tinned pumkin but im trying to locate a fresh one from halloween that hasnt been carved. How do i prepare it if found? In your opinion what from my rambling message do you think is the cause and also anything more i can do?
Again may thanks to you and all contributers!
My 2 year old female boxer Georgie Girl ate a small (4"x6") bag made of craft polyester felt. It had nontoxic glue and glitter on it. She also ate part of a plastic bag. This was yesterday. Last night she vomited a lot and there was a bunch of felt in it, and I'm pretty sure she barfed out all of the plastic. Yesterday she was eating and drinking and running around normally, but today she won't eat, she's dry heaving every once in a while and she's moping. No fever, no swelling of her belly, but she hasn't pooped. I don't think she ate anything else, and my husband is out of town which I know upsets her. If she won't eat in the morning or vomits again I'm taking her to the vet. Does it seem like this is something to worry about?
with ribbons, strings and pretty much anything being bad for an animal, in the event my 3 yr old black lab did eat/swallow ribbon, would the size of her dictate how long any side effects would talk place? Like obstruction, or it passing or partially passing?
hi you just linked me to this page and read it. my dog potchi didnt have any diarrhea and doesnt have blood on his stool and bile. no fever as well. what should i do for her to gain energy? dextrose needed?
my dog is only one and is really playful but yesterday he started acting sluggish so i just thought he was getting tired.but this morning i woke up and he had puke in his kennel and he is still acting sluggish. i dont have alot of money so i wanted to know what you think i should do
Our puppy (5 month mini american eskimo) swallowed a small chicken bone yesterday. He wouldn't eat or drink today so we took him to a vet. The vet took a abdominal x ray which found no bone but gas and prescribed pepto bismol. He told us to contact him if situation does not improve. How common is this and how worried should we be? Some additional info that might be useful is Dog did not vomit at all today and played outside today but is withdrawn/tired inside.
My puppy Hattie suddenly went lethargic, started throwing up and having diarrhea saturday. at first I thought it was some terrible disease like parvo or Coccidia but sunday morning her bm was more solid again and she wasn't as lethargic. She still wasn't eating, but she seemed to be doing a lot better from saturday, so I started to think it may have been a blockage. Monday morning she vomited twice, but it was all stomach acid. I tried giving her food she wouldn't touch it, but her energy was coming back up and she was looking better. by evening she still would not eat her food but she would eat her treats again and she wanted the cats food (which I refused). Now it is Tuesday and this morning she finally had a solid bm again only it looked like it was poopy stuffing. So I am guessing that her duck that she ripped apart is the culprit to her problem, and that she thinks it is her food. I did buy some canned dog food today and mixed a little in with her dry dog food and she is eating it like nothing ever happened. My question is should the stuffing just pass normally since we got a good chunk through her system? Should I take her to the vet? and I was planning on giving her her first set of shots this week but now that she's been sick I'm wondering when I should give her the shots? She is back to her normal self which I am very thankful for I just need to know if I need to take any more precautions or is the worst over? Thank you
my dog is in the process of passing of a sock - it's beyond the throwing up stage, he eats food, drinks has lot of energy but is having a hard time passing the sock. I assume partial blockage or just slow moving sock. Any idea's if there is something i can give him to help lube him up a bit?
My family and I went to the gym on Saturday, when we returned, we found the turkey from Thanksgiving in the middle of the kitchen floor and my pit bull no where in site! 24 hours later, she began throwing up and that continued all night long! I took her to the vet the next morning. After running some blood test and an xray, they found that she had 2 bones visible but because it was near her colon, surgery wasn't needed! They put her on IV and gave her some medication. She has not passed the bone yet because she has nothing in her stomach to poop out! She is very lethargic and it's hurting my heart! She is still throwing up a little.. Yesterday it was grass! The vet suggested sending her to another hospital to do an ultrasound and possibly surgery! The problem with that is, I can afford it..At all.. Please advise!
hi... can someone give me advice on what to do with my puppy. My puppy is a 3 month old chinese shar pei and he ate a 4 inch barbeque stick and i'm afraid that something bad might happen to him. Please help, thanks!!!
my dog ate my roommates condoms. condoms as in plural. I had to help pull one out today and we came home to find her trashcan pulled over again and she admitted to feeling like he could have eaten two or three. what should i do?? will this hurt him? i am a college student and i don't want to spend a fortune on something that would not cause him any harm. he's a 23 lb boston. any insight?
my daughter has 11week king charles was not eating or drinking being sick all the time took him to vets put on i.v and given antibotics.sented home next day had to be brought back that night nothing showed in xrays or bloods had operation to find bowel was blocked had no insurance and wonderful vet only charged £430 puppy seems to be doing better is drinking and started to eat.
Yesterday woke up to my 1 yr 8mth old vomitting. Noticed there were three more puke piles in the room. One of them she must have eaten again. She then continued swallowing a lot for an hour or so. I took her to vet and got this liquid to coat throat and stomach and some antibiotics. Today she seems to be swallowing less but not having an appetite to eat her own food. Yet she would eat a piece of bread. She is also drinking water. In the last two weeks she has not chewed anything up. I let her chew on deer antlers with a bit of the skull and took it away when i saw her breaking off pieces of it. Is it possible for her to have a sliver of the bone in her esophagus and now its irritating her? or what could this possibly be?
I have a schnauzer, well actually I have two, but this story is about just one of them. Being a good "Momma" to my dogs, I try and spoil them as much as possible with lots of love, toys and treats. By reading the above posts I made the mistake many of you other dog owners did as well. I gave my dogs a bone and almost killed one of them.
Thinking that dogs and bones were meant to be together, I stupidly gave a smoked bone to both of my schnuazers. One of them was not effected, but the other was severely impacted. He started walking around very listless, and his cute little tail was tucked up so close to his behind, it looked like he had no tail at all.
I was up all night with him, as he was very uncomfortable and roaming around. On our first walk of that horrible night, he tried his best to have a bowel movement, but could not. Totally not like his usual habit. We came home and he continued to look very uncomfortable and restless. My other dog had decided it was time for his sleepy time and went off to bed, leaving me with the sick dog.
As the night went on, he grew more irrated, and he started shaking and shivering. I was thinking he was cold, so I kept him close for body heat and put a cuddly blanket on top of him, but his shivering got worse and worse as the night progressed on. By morning, we had gone around our neighbourhood block 3 times, with the thought of walking would make him have a poop. No luck
At 9am I called my Vet, and brought him in to get looked at. I was there for 2 hours and after a blood test I was told that although he could not feel any blockage when the vet examined him, the blood test revealed that there was a spike in his test that showed leakage from his intestine. I was then told that surgery would most likely need to be performed, and that even that would not guarantee that my beloved pet would make it though.
Needless to say I was crushed, and left the vet almost $300 dollars poorer (in tears) and with 5 different kinds of medication. I came home and started with the medications that he did not get by injections at the office and purchase some electolites and the simple but amazing aid of canned pumpkin (no spices added).
The blood test had also shown that my dog was severely dehidrated, so I was syringe feeding him water and the electolites. He managed to pass some digested bone, and I was hopefull that this was the turning point to him getting better.
He disposition started to reflect his normal behaviors, and he started looking for food. I was told to make him plain rice with added hamburg or chicken as it is easy for him to digest. I did that and fed him small amounts.
It is now almost 30 hours since he has eaten the bone, and although he is acting much more like his normal self, I am still concerned as his bowel movements are still very soft and small. I lay awake tonight listening to his gentle groans and breathing scared that this horror may not be done yet.
I never thought my life could be so impacted by my dog's stool. Who would of thought! I pray that my dog will make a dump as he use to and them maybe I can safely breathe again.
Please if anyone has taken the time to read though this long drawn out description of my although good intention screw up, PLEAE NEVER FEED YOUR DOGS COOKED BONES. Even if you have in the past and had no problems, take it from someone who knows.......Your pet's life is worth so much more than a bone.
Thank you to all who posted above it was very comforting to read your thoughts and experiences.
For all you dog lovers--please know that obstructions are SO common and if you want to save your dog, DON'T WAIT! My friends dachsund and a small 1 - 2in corner of a rag and seemed fine. My friend forgot about it because the dog was eating, drinking, and pooping normally. On the 4th morning, he suddenly was less interested in food, but seemed OK. She came home and found him dead. The vet found the little piece of rag obstucting his bowel. Know that people often make the mistake of thinking the dog is OK because it is still eating. drinking, pooping. It can take several days for there to be a sudden obstruction, and it can get very serious very fast. My two dachsunds have both had to have surgery for this--one eats socks and underwear and the other tears fur and stuffing out of stuffed animals. Three surgeries, so expensive, but when they are obstructed, the intestines start to die off aftertime and they die from this. If your dog is sick, DON'T WAIT, especially if you suspect they may have eaten something other than dog food. It can be a very small object or piece of something and it can still obstruct.Anything with strings is really bad, i.e. shreeded the fur of an animal so it is stringy, shredding a sock, again, the threads can wind through the intestines as the dog tries to pass it and it can twist the intestines like an accordian. Again, this gets serious very fast. Most will say if the dog eats and poops normally for several days after eating an object then suddenly has trouble with vomiting (even if nothing comes up) and /or stops pooping as much, that could mean an obstruction. BUT, know that both of my dogs, while obstructed, ate and pooped-- it was a partial obstruction that allowed some things in and out, but still serous and deadly, as eventually the intestines start to die off. When my dogs get obstructed, they act normal for days--eat, drink, play, maybe just try to gag/vomit a couple times but nothing comes up. Seems like just a touch of upset stomach. No diarhhea. BUT, days later, start to go off on their own a little bit. maybe hide under the bed, sometime make stretching movements or even try licking themselves in the hind end. Dogs can often be very sick without acting like it so if you are seeing signs of illness, get it checked out! I didn't want to believe my vet when they said I needed all these tests like xray, barium study (like a dye where they can watch it move through the digestive track while xraying to see if the dye is slowing anywhere. In all 4 cases where my dogs needed surgery, the XRAY SHOWED NOTHING! If they eat a hard object like a rock, you would see on an xray but not fabric! Barium study with xray really is necessary, and even with barium, they can sometimes be obstructed and the barium will go through, again, especially if they ate fabric, ad the liquid barium can go through the fabric and make it appear there is no blockage when there actually is. Please please don't wait--if your dog eats something it is not supposed to, if you take it immediatey to the mergency room, they can often put a scope down into its tummy and fish out the foreign material before it gets into the intestines and causes trouble requiring surgery. If it is too late and you see signs of distress, not pooping or eating, you likely have very little time left to help your dog. Don't wait! I wish our little friends could understand how much eating these wierd things can hurt them. I sincerely hope this post helps someone make a decision to take their dog in sooner rather than later..I hope it saves a life. Good luck and please spread the word-- many people don't know how serious obstruction and intestinal blockage is.
hi, I have a 9yr old dalmation, for the passed 4 wks he`s been showing sign of what i think is a blockage. It first started one night , he wouldnt settle, kept paceing, wouldnt lay down, panting, had a fever and wouldnt eat his food the following morning(which for micky is simply not heard of, he`s the only dog I`ve had that will eat till sick eat more then go and eat the sick :-S ) We took him to a vet who perscribed synulox tablets 500mg, symptons didnt really get any better so went back to vet, again perscribed the same tablets and also zantac relief tablets, with instructions to put him on a diet of pasta rice and chicken as he`d got a stomach virus. Over the next week things slowly got better, fever went but he still didnt poop much (still daily but not the amount/size as norm). When trying micky on anything else to eat the symtons returned. We then took him to another vet as we couldnt watch him suffering, this vet wasnt happy , said he`d still got a slight temp and was still showing signs of pain. Once again given an injection for pain relief and appointment for xray on spine and stomach and to keep him on a very light diet. Xray came back fine just said micky needed a good poop as there was a large build up but no obstruction found so keep on light diet for another week (now 3 1/2 wks).End of 4th week back to vets to be told he has a food allegy, dont know how they came to this , theres been no blood test so am confused. Any way this week end micky`s bad again panting in distress, paceing, trys to bit when you touch his stomach and yelps when he trys to bring his legup and forward to his head, all because he ate the endings of the carrot peeling ! We are taking him back to the vets but dont know really what to say as they have signed him of althought he`s still not on a proper diet??? Any advice please, thinking maybe it`ll be kinder to give the final call than watch him suffer :(
I actually JUST went through a blockage removal surgery for my 9-month-old Brittany, Milo. Milo started vomiting on Friday night. I took him to the emergency clinic, but they told me there he was bright and alert, and to see my regular vet in the morning.
Saturday morning (Christmas Eve) I brought him to the vet and they said he had a GI infection. I believed them because at this point, Milo still seemed fine, vomiting aside. He was perky and playing with the other dogs in the family. He even jumped into the pool for a swim.
Christmas Day, however, there was a big change. My playful, energetic puppy became a ball of mush, lying on the couch, barely moving or responding when I called him. I rushed him back to the emergency clinic, where they confirmed a blockage. He was monitored to see if the blockage would pass on its own, it didn't, and at 3:00 in the morning the day after Christmas, they did surgery. Imagine my surprise when they presented me with a huge plastic button.
hey heres another condom one. my dog got into my sisters trash can and swalowed a condom. monday afternoon. its not tuesday night and hes seems to be fine except is last poop was much smaller then normal and i saw him sit with his hind legs sticking out once(where he might drag his butt, however he just sat). Other then that hes acting and eating completly normally. He also doesnt mind when u push on his stomach in any spots. Im still very worried. Im guessing by tomorrow if I dont see it in his stool then I should call a vet?
My 7 month old American bulldog has been being sick for 3 days now - his chicken meat today was in a cylinder shape - the only thing we know he's eaten that he shouldn't have is kitchen roll - going to get him into the vets tomorrow - has anyone got any advice?.
Alexadry thanks for the reply. Heres a lil update. So he ate it monday afternoon and by yesterday he didnt poop at all all day. He stil has been acting completly normally and eating though. I was worried last night since he hadnt gone all day so I called the vet(which ive been avoided because im flat broke, but if it came down to it id sell my stuff to get him help). Anyways I just said he ate something from the bathroom trash can and said his symptoms. The vet assistant didnt seem to concerned and said if I wanted i could give him a childs ennema. I skipped on that, though bought one. This morning he finally pooped. Still no signs of the condom though. I guess things are ok...
What I dont know is if it could do damage being in there long term. Even though he acts fine and still has bowel movements here and there. Its still in there. It must be clogging something up
My just 3yr old golden retriever had obstructon surgery 2wks ago..he was acting very lethargic, wouldn't eat, dehydrated.it took my vet 3visits in 3days to figure out what was the matter with him.so we went forth with the surgery and came home the next morning..they pulled out little pieces of plastic that was all held together by a piece of string...they said it would have passed if it wasn't for the string..so when he came home he was back to his normal self for a few days then bam..same exact symptoms as before..so I broight him back to vet(mind u..hadent even gotten stitches out yet)..and they decided to re-xryhim..then they found ANOTHER obstruction in his stomach...they said they thought it should pass on its own because it was smaller so they sent us home..i took xare of him like a sick child for days with no sign of improvement..so I decided to call a different vet at this point because I was "waiting it out" any longer..newvet said obstruction is still on stomach and he is having a second surgery tomm.now my house is SPOTLESS..ivebeen watching him like a hawk..as far as im concerned..the vet didnt get all of the 1st obstruction out or they left something behind...it had only been 1wk since surgery..and he DOES NOT GENERALLY CHEW..so this was baffeling from the get go..but since first was obstruction kind of a fluke thing because it was held together by string..than what could this 2nd object be??ill find that out tomm...this is all not normal and everyone that knows us thinks our regular vet has messed up...really..so theyre telling me that my dog that felt "decent" for a couple days wolfef something else down..ok..im dying to know what this is!!
Hi, my 3 year old sweet little girl( 18lbs), king Charles ate a used tampon(sorry, I know how gross that is.) I find no traces of it anywhere besides that I knew it was in the garbage and now it is not. It's been exactly 27hours, two normal stools, no vomiting and eating and drinking just fine. I feel terrible and shocked. Her belly feels normal but I think I may feel "something" on her left side by her ribs, but I'm not sure if I'm being paranoid. Can a dog her size pass a tampon and be ok? Gosh, I'm beyond worried. :(
Update: I spoke with the vet after she had another normal BM, and he said to keep an eye on her and bring her in first sign she starts acting strange. It's been about 36 hours and she's playing and running around. I'm anxiety ridden. It's almost the weekend, so if anything were to happen, we'd have to go to the emergency pet clinic. $$$ :( do you think I should call more vets for second opinions?
Thanks so much for your speedy response. We just went on her nighttime walk, and she had another normal BM. We're almost at the 48 hour mark. This is so strange, I'd expect to be acting even the slightest bit different. She's a very sensitive dog, very wary of strangers and loud noises, almost had a heart attack when she was spayed and had to wear an e-collar(literally foaming at the mouth and shaking of fear), so I'd imagine she'd let me know immediately if something went awry. I'm going to continue monitoring her since I will be home for the next few days.
Another Update: Yesterday morning, Buttons didn't seem interested in her breakfast. I immediately took her to the ER Vet. Once I got there, she did her business outside and it was normal. The Vet did a physical exam and said her temp, belly, and heart looked good and "she wasn't acting like a dog that ate a tampon 4 days ago." They told me she probably already passed it but they could do radiographs for another $200+, just to be sure. Unfortunately the same night this happened, was the same night my work closed down with no explanation or notice. I asked if I could take her home and monitor her and try to feed her soft food and bring her in if she got worse without paying another exam fee. They agreed. Buttons came home, gobbled up the soft food and took a nap. She's still acting normal, eating all the soft food and it's day 5. I'm not sure what to think at this point, and I'm afraid to leave her alone. Sorry for all the updates- it must be all the obsessive poop searching and stir craziness!
Yes, with a fine toothed comb(practically) and there's nothing! Not even diarrhea. Or straining. I went on a long walk with her and she started running at the end! Question: Can their stomachs break down a tampon over a long course of time?
Just thought I'd share my story as I've just had to deal with this. My Maltese is 6lbs and 2yo. Friday I came home from work to find he had thrown up several times (foamy) and had not eaten his breakfast. He normally does, but hadn't so I left it in the area he stays in during the day. He threw up several more times and when I saw some blood in it I rushed him to the vet. They gave him two shots: Cerenia for vomiting and Famoltidine (Pepcid) for acid and gave me pills as well. They said if he was not better Saturday to bring him back. He was fine overnight, but was throwing up again Saturday. He could not even keep water down and refused anything to eat. I went back to the vet and they did blood work (all ok) and an x-ray. The x-ray showed an odd gas pattern but they could not see any blockage. They recommend me to a specialist. There they did another x-ray and an ultrasound but neither were conclusive. They did however feel something and wanted to keep him overnight for observation. In the morning they did another ultrasound and thought they saw something. He went into surgery a few hours later.
The surgeon called me to say they fished out two pieces of rubber. One in his stomach and one in his intestines, which was blocking him. The ONLY rubber I can recall him having was a puppy Kong he had ripped the top off of 3.5 months ago. I asked, "Was it purple and white?" He said, "Yes! Do you know what it is?" I told him the dog had eaten part of the top piece of a puppy Kong almost 4 months ago. I was very concerned when he did it, but I watched closely for any signs of illness and he had none and a day or two later I saw pieces of it in his stool so I assumed he had torn off small enough piece to pass it. I was wrong.
Luckily, he's back home. It has been 48 hours since his surgery and he's almost back to normal, much different than he had been over the weekend. What an ordeal!
Wow-Mike, I'm glad your Maltese is ok! My dog is still acting fine and it's been a week tonight. I'm still worried about a partial obstruction from some of the stories I've read about on this hub. I'm wondering if I should call a vet that's willing to do an endoscopy into her stomach. The way she's acting(and passing food) makes me think
that if there were an obstruction, it would be in her stomach?
I have a 4 year old big boned Golden Retriever who weighs in at 90 pounds. He has epilepsy. Usually before a siezure occurs he acts alittle different. I almost always can predict one. He has been acting strange for about 4 hours. Then suddenly I remembered my grandbabies were over exactly 48 hours ago and we couldn't find the baby's pacifier. Suddenly I'm worried that maybe he may have eaten it!! He has not vomited or has not had diarrhea to my knowledge. I haven't checked his poo because I had no reason to do so. His tummy is not bloated and he does not appear to be in pain. However,he seems depressed and is glued to my leg. (Which could mean a seizure is coming) Should I call the vet now? I'm not even sure he ate the pacifier and my daughter hasn't returned my call yet. What should I do?
Good News! The pacifier was found in the couch and good ole Murphy is acting better but still has signs of the seizure coming. I believe he does not have the blockage as I feared, however, I will be watching him closely for the next few days. He does take Phenobarbital for his seizures but still has about 4-5 per year. His blood levels were checked last week and everything was good. Thanks for your response! I appreciate it.
Hello everyone! I have had Dobies for over 30 years. I had to put mine down 2yrs ago,she was 12. I just recently was able to get another one. She is 4 months old. She seemed to be having problems, doing #2. I thought it maybe cause I gave her a rawhide or pig ear. So I didn't give her anymore. Now she has diarrhea, and seems as tho she still needs to go but can't. I have mixed a little pumpkin in her feed. She is normal every other way. Eats, drinks, plays, no bloating or vomiting. Any suggestions? She has been wormed and had shots. Thought I might get some feedback before taking her to the vet. Thank you
My son's puppy is 11 weeks old. He is crated during the day while he works. Came home on Thursday and he had chewed his bed up. Saturday morning like around 3:00 am he started having vomiting and diarrhea. Went to vet at 1:00 pm. After several tests they say he has an intestinal blockage, he ate pieces of the bed. Told us to take him home only give water, hopefully he would pass it. As of 11:30 pm, he has not. They want him back at 11:00 am Sunday morning for more xrays and possible surgery if still blocked. They hydrated him and he was very active and playful tonight. My question is due to the cost of surgery, would the plain pumpkin be worth a try first? How long should one wait before going ahead with surgery. We are prepared to go through with it, but if there are other options would may want to try them first.
I am sitting for a 5 year old black lab. She swallowed 2 socks, and threw them up this morning. It is now evening and she is still not eating or drinking. She is pretty lethargic, although seemed bouncy for a few minutes when we went for a walk. She has pooped twice today, and urinated normally. Vet says I can wait until morning, but right now...looks like a long night. Seems to me, if she passed everything, she should be feeling better by now. Is it safe to wait.?
I need advice I have a jackRussell that site something that is blocking. The small intestine I cannot afford the vet fees what can I use to. Try to unblock. Intestine Any help you can provide I would much appreciate I love my dog but I don't have the money they want to send my dog on a referral thank you
my dog ate a pillow 2 days ago and is now feeling sick we are taking him to the vet tommorrow but am worried today what can i do besides worry
I adopted a pregnant Shih Tzu about a month ago. On Thursday she knocked over the garbage can and ate half of all the bones of a baked chicken. She started yelping off an on for about an hour so I took her to the E-Vet had X-rays done they seen the bones in her stomach and decided to induce vomiting. They followed with a shot of antibiotics and some pain meds, all for almost 500 dollars. She yelped on and off all that night and the next day. Saturday was less yelping and today she only yelped after scarfing down a piece of pizza my younger brother left on my couch. She has been eating, drinking, peeing and pooping(I still haven't found any bones in her poop and a plus is that there hasn't been any blood in it). But she still isn't acting like herself. She's normally all over the place and running and jumping. While I was at the vet they said she looked like she was due for puppies in about 2 weeks, so I was wondering if that may have anything to do with the more mellow attitude(however it isn't a lethargic attitude). I have been taking her temp every 4 hours and it is normal as well. I am so confused as to what to do. Thanks in advance for any info you can give.
I will be bringing her to her usual vet tomorrow. The e vet I brought her to didn't do another xray after the induced vomiting nor did they say that any bones came up. So I'm wondering if there may be a blockage near the valve that separates the esophagus from the stomach since she can eat pureed food fine but not solid. I've been feeding her chicken vegatables and rice sent throught a food proocessor fine. She's got soft poo but not diaharea(sp) and she's been drinking fine as well. Hopefully we can figure all of this out tomorrow with out ggoing over my 1500 dollar budget. Will keep you updated.
Brought her in today to her regular vet. They looked at the x-rays from the er vet and took a few of their own looking for anything else that may be left in her their were no more bones in her belly, she had passed all of them safely but they did determined that there was a chicken bone(a super small v shaped one) caught in the esophagus. It was in all the X-rays. Even the ones from the Er vet. Kinda makes me mad that the e-vet didn't catch that and then once they sent them off and got them back they didn't think to call me and let me know. Anywho, we got sent to a Oncologist office for dogs because they had a scope that they could go down her throat with and remove it. Tired as hell and 2000 dollars later my little fluff ball is recovering from surgery, is on antibiotics (she has a slight infection) and has a scratchy throat. Hoping for a smooth, easy and speedy recovery for my little fluff ball. Thanks So Very Much for this page. It helped me so much.
I have a 7 year old Labrador who LOVES socks...I couldn't guess how many he's eaten, and passed. Then there were a couple he couldn't pass, which required surgery, and now, when I read the symptoms, I dose him up with hydrogen peroxide for vomiting, and some thoroughly rendered bacon mixed with greasy canned food to help him slide it on out. He's determined, sneaky, and good at opening drawers...
Hi there, I just wanted to share our experience right now because we're quite worried about our 2 year old German Shepherd. He's been ill for the past 5 days or so. He threw up most everything he ate for the first 2-3 days, then he started to refuse all the food we gave him (and he usually LOVES eating), and now he is struggling to poop and has diarrhea. We brought him to the vet yesterday and they are currently running some tests to see if he has a bacterial infections. However, they also said that he may have a blockage. The poor guy seems so sad and uncomfortable, he's just not his usual self. We're really hoping to find out what's wrong with him in the next day or two. We started him on a white rice and boiled chicken diet yesterday, but now he is even refusing to eat that. Any other suggestions on how to make him more content and comfortable until we find out what's wrong with him would be much appreciated.
Thank you so much for your response. After taking Nova back in they did an xray of his abdomen (had to do 2 because he is so long), and they also did an ultrasound. Nothing showed up, so no surgery, thank goodness. They kept him overnight to keep him on IV and the next morning he was happy and more like himself, and even accepted some food from the vet. All his blood tests and stool tests came back inconclusive, so they couldn't tell EXACTLY what caused the problem, but he definitely has a nasty bacterial infection in his guts. His liver enzyme count is also ridiculously high, indicating that he got into something toxic/poisonous. Weird for him though, because he's always with us when he's outside and he rarely puts anything in his mouth that we haven't given him permission to do so. So we're thinking that somehow his kibble went rancid and somehow got some nasty bacteria in it. Has anyone else experienced something like this? We had his kibble stored in a tub, but we don't do that anymore because we heard it could be bad. That's the best solution we could come up with. He's home now and it's so nice to see his big goofy grin again. He's on antibiotics and some other meds, which is very challenging to administer since he's still not keen on eating very much of anything. We're hoping he starts to feel better soon.
We've really been struggling to get Nova to eat, and since he won't eat, we can't give him his pills. We would've had to bring him back into the vet to go on IV again if we couldn't get his food/pills into him. However, we came up with a solution, and I want to share in case anyone ever comes up against the same problem. The major issue was just getting him to eat, he showed no interest at all in food. But if he did take a bite or two, once we added his pills he would refuse the food, and then stop eating again altogether. So we separated administering pills with eating. We now treat giving pills like one of his 'necessary duties', like having to lie still while I brush him and clip his nails. He doesn't necessarily like it all the time, but he knows it must be done and has to behave. We wrap the pills in a little bit of meat, put it in way in the back of his mouth, and then he swallows and drinks some water. Feeding time has now turned into an exciting game, where we run around the house doing differnt things and when he's least expecting it we offer him food as a reward (acting very excited-like) and he's so excited himself and caught up in the moment that he eats it without thinking. I think that separating his pills from his food has been key, so now he doesn't associate one with the other. Hope this can be helpful for someone else.
I came home today and my dog ate 2 halves of the home interior apples. He has been spitting up foam looking stuff. He has been laying around. He won't eat or take a treat.
Mt dog ate a glove today whilst out on a walk. I tried in vain to get from him but he wandered out onto a frozen pond where i couldnt get to him and roceeded to eat the whole thing. It was made from wool, and looked like an adult size, but cant be sure.
This was at 10am, he has since had food at 12.15pm and he still seems ok running around and playing with the other dog we have in the office.
What should I be looking for here? As he seems fine at the moment.
Thanks
Luke
My 2 yrs old, dachi-mix, ate a long plastic baggage tie and buckle-woke at 4:00AM, a couple days ago, diarrhea and blood in stools--took him to vet-he was put 1 pill for the diarrhea and 1 for the blood in the stool. Got us next morning--couldn't move his hind legs-back to vet--checked for obstruction and brought in bag with pieces of plastic baggage tie that he chewed up and is pooping out--will take time--on other medication for pain antibiotics. Eating good and pooping the plastic out--go with boiled hamburger and boiled chicken and rice, yogurt helps to coat the stomach--also cooked macaroni, cooked oatmeal and soft-boiled eggs--feeding 3 to 4 small meals a day for the first 2 days-thr slowly switch the diet back to regular food--dry food, not wet food or mix with.
I have a now 13 month old Chihuahua. When he was 5 months old.I bought an Adams flea, tick and larvae collar from wal-mart. He was fine that day,.but the next day, he was in bed all day. He refused food and went lethargic. I couldn't figure out what was wrong with him. Then I remembered the collar. I read the label, washed his neck with soap and water like it said and rushed him to the vet. He ended up with an Iv the next day and was back to his playful self. Now I tell everyone to buy the flea and tick medicine from the vet. I learned my lesson.
