Signs of Retained Placenta in Mother Dogs

Among one of the complications that may affect the bitch after birth is the issue of retained placentas. The placenta plays a vital role during pregnancy, connecting the puppies to the mother's dog uterine wall. It is thanks to the placenta that the puppies are supplied with oxygen and food and that their waste products are disposed of.

When puppies are born the placenta is no longer needed, therefore it is expulsed from the mother dog's body. Generally, this occurs withing 15 minutes from the time each puppy is delivered. Each puppy should have one placenta, therefore, it is important to count the numbers of placentas expelled to ensure none of them is retained inside the mother.

Cases of retained placentas are quite uncommon in dogs, however there appears to be a predisposition in toy breeds. Generally, it is mostly seen in large litters and sometimes in difficult deliveries.

The main issue is that it may be dififcult for the breeders to count the placentas, because mother dogs instinctively will ingest them after they are expelled. It is beleieved that the placentas will provide mother dog with extra energy that will help her go through the first days of nursing the pups. This is why some mother dogs develop soft stools for a few days after birth.

Retained placentas have the potential to cause uterine infections and toxicity, therefore a mother dog exhibiting signs of illness or that have not expelled all the placentas shuold be seen by a vet.

Symptoms Suggesting a Retained placenta

Normally after birth, the mother will develop a greenish-black discharge that will gradually become an odorless reddish-brown within 48 hours. The main symptoms suggesting a retained placenta consists therefore, of the following:

--Development of green, fetid vaginal discharge for more than 24 hours after giving birth

-Fever

-Loss of appetite

-Lethargy

-Sometimes a retained placenta may be felt as an abdominal mass

Treatment for retained placenta

Treatment consists of an injection of oxytocin, a special medication that causes contraction of the uterus which will help the mother expel the retained placenta. If there is an infection of the uterus a spay surgery may be recommended.

Prevention of retained Placenta
While there is no way of preventing retained placentas in dogs, owners must keep a close eye on the placentas being expelled after each puppy is born and should watch the bitch carefully for possibly ingesting them. While it may be difficult to keep count of the placentas in very large litters, it is certainly worth the effort for priceless piece of mind.

very informative. My Chow chow just gave birth to 6 wonderful and lovable puppies. 5 boys and 3 girls. I was kind of worried the past few days because during the delivery, I just only counted two placentas which came out my bitch.

I was so thankful that none of the symptoms are in here for the past three days.

She is very lovely to her babies.

Thanks to this... I can now sleep well.. not worrying for the retained placentas again.

Our dog gave birth 3 days ago and is starting to have a very thick, black vaginal discharge. Before wen saw the discharge she was panting. Could this be a placenta.

alexadry profile image

alexadry Hub Author 11 months ago

It is generally normal for a dog to have an unusual discharge for a couple of days after whelping, but this should reduce drastically as the days go by.. if she is panting too though (and not from the warm weather) I would have her checked to be on the safe side..

My Dam just had 10 pups on saturday, pups are doing good except we lost one on day two she was small, my concern is people are talking about the placenta's and I don't recall seeing any would there be any way she ate it without us noticing though we watched?

alexadry profile image

alexadry Hub Author 9 months ago

At times, it could be missed since owners are often distracted by watching the pups, the mom may appear as if she is licking but instead is ingesting the placenta. I would watch her for any odd symptoms. Moms and pups anyhow should be seen by a vet 24 hours post-delivery just to ensure everything is ok.

My dog had 3 pups two days ago. Today she has a hard mass in her abdominal area. Could she still be carrying a puppy?

alexadry profile image

alexadry Hub Author 9 months ago

I would have her seen by a vet. All dogs should be seen within 24 hours of giving birth with their litter to ensure all went smoothly and to ensure all pups are healthy.

Our maltese gave birth to 4 puppies yesterday. If only i've learned about this post earlier i would have watched closely the placentas that came out. She seems fine except that she keeps on digging on our floor like how she did before she gave birth. Should i be worried?

Susan 7 months ago

Our Cacapoo gave birth on Monday, she has the symptoms you have listed and we feel she might have placentas retained in her. We plan to take her to the vet tomorrow, can she die if she does not get care right away?

alexadry profile image

alexadry Hub Author 7 months ago

A retained placenta can cause problems and the dog can go downhill quickly. You would have to monitor your dog's temperature and observe for signs of systemic illness lethargy, loss of appetite, fever, fetid green discharge. I would have her seen by another vet today for safety sake, but if that is not possible you will have to keep a close eye on her and be ready to drive her to an emergency vet in the night should she get worse.

This is my first time on this site my pitbull jus had pups two days ago and keeps panting could she have a retained placenta? one pup came out without a sac nd one died a hour later do you think she will be ok. Should I

Hello, my boxer mix had a large liter of 11 pups on Friday.(it is now sunday night) All seem to be doing very well and growing already! Mom gets up and goes out to take a break and even runs and plays. Is eating and drinking well and shows no signs of the other symptoms of retained placenta that i have seen listed on several websites. However, she is still panting heavily and this has me concerned. No fever, not withdrawn, no discharge, eating and drinking well. Just the non-stop panting. Is this sometihng anyone else out there has seen with theirs?

Mitra 7 months ago

That is exactly what is happening to my pitbull..very heavy panting with no signs of any fever etc..I'm really scared for her although she seems happy everything seems ok except that..can't wait for an answer..she will be going to the vet 2mrw if it continues assd I doubt if shes not hot cause its breezy at night nd she still pants heavily

Lynn 7 months ago

Update on our new mommy (boxer mix)

Well, things seem to be much better today. Nothing has really changed except that her panting has slowed way down. One thing i have noticed tho is that her rib cage was spred to the point that from the back she looks like a cow, lol... This seems as tho it is starting to come back into place now that all the babies are out of the way. Perhaps the panting was caused from the pain of their displacment? Maybe... either way i am just glad its over for her. She will be spayed soon as nursing is over! (rather my son likes it or not) Never Again!!

PS: Anyone wanna puppy? =)

Mitra 7 months ago

Thats good to hear I'm responding cuz my dog went thru the same thing nd my dog as well has slowed down with the panting..I was literally in tears cause my funds are not up to par right now..nd my dog is getting spayed asap as well..regardless of what my boyfriend wants lol.. I wish you luck

My Chorkie gave birth 5 days ago on Oct 27th, 2011.. She had 5 puppies, 2 of which passed away right after being born.. she ignored the other 3 pups for almost 24hours, then she started to nurse them.. she seemed like everything was ok, until today... Se didnt eat her dinner lastnight or drink her water.. today i have gotten her to eat and drink a little, but she stillhas that blackish vaginal discharge(kinda smelly) and doesnt seem to be producing milk... This pregnancy was totally unplanned, and I am on a VERY tight budget, am I going to lose my dog??? Are there any facilities out there that will help and let me keep my dog??? I live in Las Vegas, NV..

My mini aussie had 7 healthy pups 8 days ago, she still has severe diahrea, wont eat or drink and if she does she throws it up 8 hours later totaly undigested. shes lethargic and tries to hide outside for hours.she still feeds her babies. my vet said to feed her puppy food but that made the diahrea worse.I tried giving her yogurt like he said but I have to squirt it down her throat. She is very thin now. Im scared for her.

alexadry profile image

Joan, I think your dog should see the vet at this point. It does not sound normal at all. She really should have been switched to puppy food a while ago before giving birth, and switching food should always be done gradually over the course of 5-7 days.

Kate 5 months ago

Hi,

I found your sight very useful! My dog had puppies 12 days ago and she is still bleeding, it is red and I would say almost clot like? She seems in good health and isn't really exhibiting any concerning signs otherwise. She eats about 3-4 times a day and is very attentive to the puppies, which are all very healthy and plump. I am slightly worried of the bleeding although it has slowed down slightly still concerns me. What are your thoughts on this?

Thanks!

alexadry profile image

alexadry Hub Author 5 months ago

Kate, generally there can be a discharge for up to 3 weeks especially after giving birth to a large litter, but it would be worth it to have her see the vet just to make sure everything is going as planned. All dogs should be seen 24 hours after giving birth to make sure there are no retained placentas. In some cases, discharges may be due to a piece of tissue still inside that is causing the cervix not to close. Best wishes.

my stray rescue pit just had pups dec.19th,there were 9 total,2 still borns and 1 died the next day.but we have 6 very healthy big mouth crybaby pups but i am concerned about the after bleeding of moma, she seems fine, she is eating, taking good care of the babies and seems to be almost back to her normal goofy self. i know the bleeding is normal, just like in humans, but how much is too much and when should it slow down? it doesnt smell funny and i know all afterbirths were expelled,i counted as she gave birth to ea pup including the 2 still borns. is there anything i can give her to help slow it down, will a cool bath help any?

alexadry profile image

Sadies moma, it can take at times a couple of weeks for the bleeding to stop and should be tapering off to a pale pink or tan before disappearing entirely. Watch her and if anything appears unusual take her to the vet.

My shihtzu just had puppies last Tuesday night, first one died inside her and then four healthy ones, then her last one was born dead. I took her to the vet the next day for her check up and they gave her the shot to clean her out . They also gave her some antibiotic to be safe against any infection. The vet couldn't feel another puppy but wasn't 100% sure because her uterus was still swollen. He told me to look for signs if she may still have a pup in there. She is doing great and no signs but when I try to feel in her belly, it feels like I can feel something. I'm obviously not a vet so I don't know what to really feel for. My question is, would it be possible for her to still have a puppy in her but acting completely fine? Would the antibiotics hide any signs that she would normally show if this is the case? Im always worried because I stress about every little thing. My sister thinks she's fine, I don't know if I'm over thinking things. Thank you!

Hi. My pekapoo(Mimzy) had puppies this morning she did a great job. I only seen one huge placenta it was the size of puppy. She completely ate it. She is drinking and eating. My only concern is that Mimzy hasn't went to the bathroom, she doesn't want to leave her pups at all. I'm also a little worried because she pants sometimes, but during her whelping she never panted. Should I be concerned?

Rosemary 4 months ago

I'm worried about my Yorkie. She gave birth to one puppy and then the second one was a deformed puppy, one that was barely formed. She ate it...Right after that she had another clear sac with greenish fluid, but was not exspelled. Two hours later, the bitch just brock the sac and licked herself. Was this the placenta? Can another pup still be expected? She seems fine and is comforting the first born pup. What should I do now?

alexadry profile image

alexadry Hub Author 3 months ago

All dogs that give birth should be seen by a vet within 24 hours after giving birth. Your vet is the best source to determine if something has been retained. He/she will give a special medication that will help the uterus contract and release anything stuck in there. Best wishes!

alexadry profile image

A placenta is a good sign as you know it was not retained but was actually expelled. What about the other placentas? Did she eat them? Keep an eye on her and have see the vet if you notice any symptoms listed in the article. All reputable breeders should have their female dogs and litter see the vet within 24 hours of giving birth.

Generally it is good practice for breeders to take mom and litter to vet 24 hours post whelping. This excludes retained placentas and helps assess the health of litter and mom, so yes, it should be a must regardless if there is a retained placenta or not.

alexadry profile image

This sounds unusual. Generally, behaviors as such are seen in young mom bred on their first heat. How old is she? It could also be she is looking for another place to nest, but I find it odd she cries and goes under the bed when the pups cry. Let's see if some experienced dog breeder can chime in.

This is why vet appointments are so important 24 hours post-birth, only a vet can determine if there are retained pups or retained placentas. I recommend a vet visit regardless if your dog looks like she is ok or not.

My bebegirl had pups on march 19. She had 6 even though r vet said 5 from xrays. This is her 1st litter{kinda mine 2} all 6 are doing good , wasnt sure if pup#1 would make it she barly breathing when she finaly came out but between mom n me she doin good. My Q is about the mom, idk to take her to vet 24 after my vet didnt say to either ni I spook to him while she was having them. Im not sure if its nething or not but she is getting super skinny and panting or breathes heavier she is eating fine/she eats asif she hasnt in a month ive increased her food by triple instead of double ifig cuz alll then pups. I dont know whats what or whats to do thats why im asking u cuz I might just be worrying 4 nothing .

alexadry profile image

alexadry Hub Author 7 weeks ago

Regardless of having problems or not all moms and pups should be seen within 24 hours by a vet. This to ensure the wellness of all and check in any placentas remain in the uterus. An injection to reduce the size of the uterus may also be given to prevent infections and other complications. You should keep an eye on her rectal temperature, should not be over 103.5.

So I would suggest her being seen. This is what reputable breeders do. best wishes.

my chihuahua gave birth last night to one puppy which sadly didnt make it, she didnt have the easiest of births and the puppy was breech and stck for a while. my chihuahua seems very depressed as i imagined she would going through all that and having nothing at the end of it but im abit worried as i keep smelling a bad smell coming from her could this be another puppy inside still? she didnt have anymore contractions or try to push anymore after the first

alexadry profile image

alexadry Hub Author 6 weeks ago

Your chihuahua should see the vet. All dogs should be seen within 24 hours of giving birth. It is not unusual for dog to have a vaginal discharge for up to 2 weeks after giving birth but it should not be foul. A foul smell may be caused by a fetus, infection, and premature separation of placentas. Have her seen to rule out any problems.

Sometimes small and toy breeds give birth to only one puppy, but to err on the side of caution have her seen by a vet. All new moms and newborn pups should see the vet in the first 24 hours since if anything remains insideit could cause an infection. Should there be dead puppies there would be no contractions. The vet would give her a clean out shot just to be on the safe side. Best wishes and congrasts!

Hello Alexadry, please help! I have a very young 9 month old maltese and she gave birth to 4 beautiful and healthy puppies. However, it has been three days and she appears to still be panting and breathing very quickly intermittently. Her discharge looks normal, red-brownish, but it smells slightly of fish. Also, I still see her straining and nesting, and she becomes distressed when her puppies cry. She's also having diarrhea, which should be fine considering she had eaten her placenta. She has been good, feeding her puppies and cuddling with them, but sometimes she leaves them and sleeps in her crate and sometimes jumps on my bed to lay with me. I brought her to the vet 12 hours after giving birth to her last pup, and the vet said that she should be fine, although he did not give her a shot of oxytocin. Should I be worried? Any help is greatly appreciated.

alexadry profile image

alexadry Hub Author 6 weeks ago

Nine months old is very young for a Maltese to be having puppies and this may make her not a perfect mom and may explain why she gets distressed when her puppies cry. Did you take her temperature? make sure there is no fever. Temperature should be 101-102 or a just tad little bit higher after whelping. Diarrhea pretty normal after ingesting placentas.I do feel though that this panting warrants further investigation to be safe. I do not like the fact that she is still straining, please give your vet a call. Here are more tips:

Hi Our springer had her litter over 24 hours, I watched and cared and resuscitated a lot of her pups, unfortunately we lost one of the litter of 9. After 12 hours the dark green liquid died back to a brown/red. During the whelping there was a small, its not foul just a lingering smell a bit like raw meat, it still seems to be hanging around, we gave her a bath of the back end only as she had made one heck of a mess but the discharge she has smells the same. We watched all of her placentas come out apart from the last which she was tugging at an umbilical cord for a while. Please bare in mind here that a vet appointment has been made for tuesday (this is the earliest they had unless an emergency arises) we are not a backyard breeder, just new to the scene :) my question is this and it sounds a bit wierd..... She keeps straining like she is having a contraction (without the muscle movement in her uterus) we thought that it could be a retained pup or placenta, but have checked her birth canal and palpitated her abdomin and there doesn't seem to be anything there, I even feathered her internally causing her to push a few times and nothing just discharge, THEN I let her out to the toilet (with torch as its dark) and low and behold she passed a faeces, could she be getting confused after the feeling of having the pups?? Temp normal, eating and drinking ok when she can tear herself away from the pups, looking a little gaunt, gums nice and pink, very settled, nursing her pups and fussing over them all of the time... Am I just panicking? Or do you think this could be an emergency.... I trained as a vet for 2 years in 1998 but left as I could not bare to put animals to sleep after we had a litter of puppies come in to the surgery that all had complications. Im also hoping this question can help out some other people.

By now, after she passed a stool, the behavior should have stopped. Is she still straining? If so, I think it wouldn't hurt to find a vet with an opening tomorrow just to play it safe. Ideally, dogs should see a vet within 24 hours of giving birth because it is easier to notice problems and take care of them early rather than later.

She was fine after a few minutes, but it really frightened me. I will take her to the vet tomorrow, but was that a possible seizure?

It is not that uncommon for a dog not to go for the first hours after giving birth. The dog may be concerned about the pups. If she is not straining or appears uncomfortable I would not be overly concerned but I would keep an eye on her. Best wishes!

My Shih Tzu maltese just gave birth to 3 pups 3 days ago and I'm concerned that she isn't supply enough milk to them. Reason being is that when i squeeze her nipple no milk comes out. She is eating fine and going to the bathroom normally. She is very active as well. The only concern is making sure the puppies are getting enough milk for their growth. i am feeding her puppy food and she has plenty of water on hand. Her nipples look full, they are just not spilling milk when i stimulate them and the puppies sometimes whine when they are nursing. is something more that i can give her to enable her to produce more milk?

my shih tzu gave birth to 5 puppies 2 days ago and is very attentive to them but she keeps pushing 2 of the pups out and they are getting cold and skinny i have been bottle feeding the 2 pups every 2 hours and they also had fluid injections under the skin yesterday unfortunatly 1 didnt make it. My concern is now all but 1 of the pups are very lethargic and unable to feed off mum. i cannot afford anymore vet visits being a single mum of 3 should i continue bottle feeding all pups and then return them to mum after every feed so she can still clean and nurture them?

Jerry, a dark green to black discharge is often may persist for several days after birth and the traces of discharge may persist for up to 3 weeks. If this is a month already I would consult with your vet to just make sure everything is ok.

Lack of milk is known as agalactia. If she is not producing enough milk you may need to start feeding some of them. You will need a good milk replacer to feed them which can be purchased in pet stores. There is really nothing that will increase production other than feeding a good puppy diet that you can do at home. Your vet may decide if an injection of oxytoxin may help. There are some prescription meds that may help, but you really need to figure out why she is not producing enough milk. Is she stressed? too hot? are the pups suckling enough to stimulate milk let-down?

generally when a mom rejects pups is because she may sense there is something wrong with them. Yes, you can bottle feed them and allow mom to clean if she is willing, otherwise you may need to wipe them with a wet cloth to stimilate their bowel movements.

Is the temperature falling at night? are they trying to nurse? s the mom getting up to eat and they are left alone? is it only one puppy or all puppies? try to observe them and let me know if you find a pattern. generally, when pups are nursed every 2-3 hours during the day, they should for most the most time sleep. If it's constant crying something is wrong.

dana 4 days ago

they are trying to nurse. it is usually all the pups. they will suckle for a little bit and then stop and then go back again. i clean her nipples once a day to fend off infection and i inspect to see if her milk is coming in. which is the case and everything seems fine. the whelping box temperature is always around 70-75 degrees. and they are always fine during the day. they nurse every 2-3 hours. i make sure if she doesn't always stimulate their bowels. i assist when needed. it only around 10 pm at night the crying begins. and around 6 am they return to normal.

Hey I'm maltese just had a litter of 4 a few days ago. in the beginning she use to stay with them all the time. Now i find that she stays outside the box rather than in. When they cry she goes to them. But normally she likes to go and play else where. Is that normal?

And the mom is being fed puppy food? Are the puppies sleeping all together on top of each other? If so, that is a sign of being cold. If they tend to crawl away and lie on their own, they may be too hot. It helps to see if the pups are gaining any weight each day using a digital scale. Check if the pups are well hydrated; ig you pinch the skin on neck and back it should spring back quickly. If you still believe the amount of milk is inadequate consult with your vet. Is she nursing them every two hours? can it be the area is too hot? isthis her first litter, and was she bred on her first heat? Some dogs bred too young are not mature enough to raise a litter of pups.

Yes, she should see the vet, at 10 years old pregnancy can be tough on dogs. She should not be acting that way, best wishes.

melissa 3 days ago

i actually took her to the vet yesterday and both the mother and the puppies are doing amazing. it looks as if her milk is coming in now. But just as a backup I brought formula replacement and i hope everything is going to be ok now.

I have been away from my desk due to work but generally this is not a good sign. This discharge can be due to be a puppy's placenta separating from the uterine wall and at times this occurs when the puppy is already dead. Please consult with your vet if you dog notice anything unusual. best wishes
