How to Keep Male Dogs Away From Females in Heat
81Expect Admirerers Looking for Your Dog
When your female dog is in heat expect all your neighborhood intact male dogs to know. No, in the canine world there are no needs to join websites like match.com or to read through romantic classified ads to find love. The news simply travels through the air even several miles away reaching the male dog's noses and turning them from calm, relaxed dogs into hyper dogs attempting to escape.
It is not unheard of admirers showing up on your front porch awaiting anxiously for your princess to come outside to do her business. If you live in the country, where there are no farm dogs, do not be surprised to even find some coyotes nearby. And, yes, if you even wondered, your female dog is not completely safe in a fenced yard. There have been instances of dogs being able to mate even through chain link fences!
Tips on How To Keep your Female Dog in Heat Away from Males
-Supervise Her
Of course, just as the males are eager to meet your dog, your dog will be eager to meet her admirers. She may whine, pace back and forth near the door and even howl. Keep an eagle eye on her, as she will attempt as well to escape. When going out to do business always keep her leashed and carry a spray bottle or a stick to threaten dogs away.
-Keep Separated
If you own a pack of dogs, you must keep males separated from the female. This can be done by crating dogs, keeping them in separate rooms or having a friend temporarily keep the male dogs. In any circumstance, males should be kept separated as well, because a female's dog heat may spawn terrible fights among males.
-Close Windows
While there is not much that can be done when ''love is in the air'' owners can minimize the flow of dog perfume by closing the windows.
-Chlorophyll
There are reports that chlorophyll may help mask the smell of heat. There are generally two versions: tablets or liquid. The liquid form may be found in health food stores in 100 mg. Generally 1 tablespoon in the morning and one in the evening poured on the dog's food may do the trick. To work best it should be given on the first day of heat. This is not a solution! Male dogs may still want to mate, sochlorophyll will only mask the smell a bit. Expect odd green stools after administering chlorophyll.
-Lust Buster
This is a special product that can be sprayed on the dog to make her less attractive to males.
-Britches
Britches are special panties for dogs that may help prevent unwanted pregnancies when worn properly. However, always keep dogs supervised as they are not mistake proof.
Of course, the most obvious and highly recommended solution is to spay and neuter dogs. This way there will be no more annoying episodes of howling and cleaning up messes, or risking unwanted pregnancies in an all ready over crowded and over populated dog world.

my dog is like the most relaxed dog in the world, he never barks/cries anything. every 6 months this bitch goes into heat and he can't control himself. It's the most bloody annoying shit I have ever encountered. He is a smart dog but when that fucking smell overpowers his brain. He simply can't control him self. He shakes from head to toe if the door makes any remote sound.
I forgot to mention that I am going to attempt the vicks thing you suggested. If it works I will be in a world of bliss.
been up for the past 2 nights because of my male dog barking crazy for my femail whos in heat. its driving me mad!! tried the vix thing ,no chance! these last 2 days hes changed from a lovable quiet relaxed dog to a crazy hot panting nutty dog! all i want is some sleep!
My son has a Grand Show/Nite Champion Walker Female who is in heat. She is in a kennel. We have asked are neighbor to put up his male dog three times we've already chased him off three times. Now he waits until 2:00am to 3:00am to come calling any ideas what I can do? because I would like to get some sleep
I"m hoping the vicks vapor rub works I have 2 females in heat at the moment.
Let's be responsible pet owners. Unless you are a registered breeder.........have your pets spayed or neutered.
I did this to my dog, and as a result, he does not need to be caged. Nor does the neighborhood hear him "cry" and whine throughout the day and night.
Any reports on the Vicks working? My 14-month old Westie has gotten his first sniff of "love" in the air. Kills me to hear him whine like his paw has been stepped on. While I am a responsible pet owner, thank you, right now $$ in our household is a major and unexpected issue and as soon as finances become available, we will have him neutered. And speaking of responsible pet owners, in my personal opinion, I feel that owners of female dogs in heat should take responsible and safe measures to hide the scent of their dogs in heat, if they are not in the business of breeding the bitch, with commercially available products on the market, so that their neighborhood male dogs do not go crazy trying (and sometimes unsafely) to get to their dog in heat. That's what I would do if the situation was reversed.
why dont some of the "annoyed" people stop whining
about a perfectly natural behaviour, that is animal instinct.....you just have to put up with it and shut up!!! or get the money and have your dog spayed/neutered
and dont blame your neighbours dog .....for being a dog!!!
bored listening!!
My bitch is having her first season, other dogs are a nightmare, and I have taken 'precautions' in making my property more secure, and tried masking her scent, to no avail, all I can say is....
Would someone please bottle this and sell it as perfume!!!!
It boils down to, I wanted her, I love her, I'll put up with it untill I get her spayed!
:-)
I have two dogs, a male and a female....great right? >:/
I was wondering if the Vicks thing actually works....well does it???
The Vicks works miricals my male would whine and he would go balistic but thanks to this website they can and my family can sleep in peace...well everyone else can but i can't i can always hear her snearing at her! It's like rape but there dogs because she wants to sleep and wants HER! He had to sleep in the kennel in the garage he would bark and he would loose his voice and he would rub the top of his muzle raw against the kennel door it was horrible and our female would sleep under my desk on an old puppy blanket from when she had littlers but now all is well!
vicks rub does NOT work,sorry
Im going to try the Vicks thing. My female is spaid but has a problem with her bladder after she was spaid. The Vet gave her a hormone injection to help controle the bladder, but now she has gone into heat. My male boerboel has been barking, panting, sniffing and licking for a week now. No sleep for us and one stupid looking male dog - with his nose where it does not belong.
i had jusst ried the vicks thing but my "bitch" has been in heat for 3 days so sad tthing is shees almost done the good thing is the vicks does work like jack(my male doggie) would go up to jill's (my girl doggie) butt then hell walk right back out hes now getting some sleep after like 5 minutes of doing it hes not whining.
Ready to try the Vicks, Until I get my little boxer/beagle fixed. (in the very very near future) she has gone into her first heat at 7 months, and my male pitt, is driving me insane. I cannot wait to get her fixed. (hopefully within two weeks she will be fixed and life will be normal again). So for those who whine that I am not responsible, I was just hoping I had a little bit longer, but I found a facility with a reasonable price to have her spayed and I can calm down the male, who is full breed and unaltered with no plans of altering.
I find this interesting because I know a woman, who lived in a typical suburban neighborhood, whose female dog was never spayed and came into regular heat cycles and was NEVER bothered by male dogs at all. Her dog went from house to fenced backyard and never did she have a problem. Never did she have any unwanted guests camped on her front lawn. I also know of a very well-known veterinarian/breeder/dog trainer/research scientist, author, Yale faculty member, etc., of yesteryear who did research into this matter and said that it is a MYTH that male dogs can smell female dogs in heat from a mile away. I also have a friend whose female show dog came into heat and the only dog that bothered her was her very own neutered male who lived in the same house with her! The male dogs that lived on either side of her house didn't have a clue. Go figure! Her dogs also never left the house or fenced backyard - never went for walks. Maybe that's the key. Neither of my friend's dogs left their homes or yards to deposit urine throughout the neighborhood that could be tracked back home.
i had my female dog fixed yesterday she was in heat and her takin care of but the two male dogs i have are still whinning and shaking and all that shit and its driving me crazy....what can i do she is fixed but is she still giving off the scent being she was in heat when she got fixed
Well I have two chihuahuas ,our female is in heat but our male won't mount her only sniff and stuff and go crazy when she is not around. But we do seem hump the blankets. So I dont understand what is wrong? Any idea anybody?
Thanks for the info, seeing people commenting the same way I feel has relaxed me somewhat. I know its instinct and am not scorning my dog, but mentally I just cant handle how he's gone from relaxed and obedient to wild and jittery. It stresses me out!
Cant wait to have my animals spayed and nuetered. I dont think vics will work, their sense of smell is waaay too strong, but, i'll give it a go... in doubt
Could my shyt zu be affected so much as he is now in his second 2 week peroid with 2 different females. He does almost no eating he has blood in his stool for a week now. And of course the female owner did nothing to help the situation. He even did not keep his dog away from mine .My shyt zu was in a seperate cagged area and the bithches owner did nothing to help.Quection is does my dogs blood problem stem from his behaviour caused by the bitch?
my pit is in heat and the other pit is losing his mind. Also my border collie is going crazy. The biggest problem is that they think I'm in heat. They are constantly trying to get to me and it is a bog problem. i have to walk them and they use this as this as their chance. I keep all of the dogs in separate rooms, and just endure the annoying howling and whining. I tried to contact this place that will neuter for 15. pits, but no response. Called "speak for animals".that stuff is 60. to get rid of the odor, but cannot afford that. I will buy the vicks, but another thread said not to use it because it was bad for the dog.
i`ll try the vicks my dogs a wein and is driving me mad i`ve had no sleep for two days!!!!
I have a female chow that had not been spayed, I was okay with that since she is a inside dog and my other dog was a female who had been spayed. The only reason I had not had her spayed is bc my brother had taken a dog to have spayed and it died after surgery from seizure. I was scared. I had already purchased certificate for the procedure. Well, I adopted a male dog from a rescue this summer.. He had been neutered. I thought I was good because even when she goes into season he can't get it up... WRONG, WRONG, WRONG! He can and they did... In my house.... Needless to say they can and will still mate, he will just be shooting blanks. I took her to be spayed yesterday and now she is back home. The surgery did not take care of the odor so here I am with the same problem but now she has had surgery, needs to behave herself and I am running after them both to make certain that nothing happens because I do not want that crap going on in my house... yuck!!!! I am going to go get the vicks vapor rub and try... Also, doggie diapers... maybe this will help too! Wish me luck......
I just used the vicks on my male dog and had instant results. He looked at me confused as his brain cleared and is now resting for the first time in 3 days. A million thanks.
Hmm Vicks worked for oooh ten minutes. Am knackered after 4 nights of no sleep. Darned dogs. How long does the female secrete this hormone for?? Thank goodness it'll never happen again!!
So my 8 month old shih tzu is in heat and I can't get my male away fom her. He won't sleep or eat anything he has started to pee all over the place ( this dog never went in the house ). Is the peeing part normal? I have started putting a doggie dipper on my female but doesn't do any good he jus chewys it right off of her. I called pet smart to see if they can suggest something they talked to me like I was crazy. At this point I'm willing to try anything. I'm going to try the Vicks trick. I sure hope it works. It's already been about a week is it too late to start? Or it doesn't matter? Oh n how cani get my male to eat something? His lost a lot of weight.
What I can't understand is why people have 2 dogs one male and one female don't have them spayed or neutered and then complain about the problems they are having when the bitch is in season.
This is a dogs natural reaction and if you don't ever intend to breed then why have 2 dogs one of either sex and not have them spayed or neutered?
if one is younger than the other then why have the other before having your 1st dog spayed/neutered?
Just common sense really isn't it.
wonder whats going around in the male dogs head when a female is in heat...
I'm SO thankful for this hub - I've never had puppies or dogs before and they came as a packaged deal for my mother - one male, one female - 12 weeks old. Well, the female came in heat and the male dog, usually so well behaved, became a raving maniac - I tried some pull ups on the female --- the male dog would go to any lengths to get to her and the barking all night long was driving us all crazy - I would have gotten them fixed but it was over a weekend this happened and I had been tied up with care-taking of the extreme measure - my 90 yr old mother and three great nieces - 3, 8 and 14 - who all wanted my undivided attention. So, in absolute desperation I went to the web --- I tried the vicks thing and absolute quiet - I couldn't believe it - blissful quiet ---- thank you SO MUCH - I'll get them fixed on Monday!
It was really interesting reading everyone's comments. I have a female mixed lab/German shepherd that's a beautiful white color & the sweetest, most gentle dog ever! Recently we got a male lab in a beige color because we'd like to breed them since her kind is almost impossible to find. We live out in the country, so they have lots of room to run around & they're both outdoor dogs. It must be true that dogs can smell another dog in heat because our male dog's been barking nonstop the past few nights & we saw 3 stray dogs in our yard last night, one this morning. All different. I don't know where they've come from, but I'm kinda scared. One of them tried to attack me this morning when I walked my daughter to the bus. I can hardly wait for our dog to just get pregnant & then we can bring her to the vet...
No offense, but what is the purpose of breeding a mixed breed? Sounds like you are a backyard breeder. With so many unwanted pets in the shelter do you really think there is a need to produce more puppies? Have you found homes for them? A responsible breeder has a list of people before even mating. Do you have the money and knowledge to breed? Can you afford a c-section should the need arise? I just cannot find a good reason to breed when the shelter I work for is killing dogs on a daily basis, sorry there is no excuse for breeding without a purpose...please visit your shelter and think it over
My female husky was fixed 12 years ago,yet still goes into heat and bleeds every time the weather changes. She is 14 now and other than some weight issues the last couple of years her check ups are always good. Now I have a year old Pom that I might strangle before her heat is over. Lost my job right after I got him so fixing him has not been in the budget. Hoping the Vicks helps tonight because I have not slept in a week. Thanks for the info here. Can't wait till I can see my husky without a Pom attached to her head or behind.
My male dog who is due to be neutured next week has been showing sexual advances to my new puppy who is five months.
It's always during play could this be because she is getting ready to come into heat?
Thank you for your advice on here, I also have a problem with my Lhasa pup, she is five months old and is really picky with her food. I've tried allsorts, from Eukanuba which she soon went off, then James Wellbeloved, both wet and dried. She will eat liver and obviously chicken, but very little else, she is gaining weight and is the correct weight for her age I feel. I take the bowl away when she has eaten and don't feed her tit-bits unless they are rewards whilst I am training her.
I too had a big problem with covering up the scent of my female dog in heat, especially since I have two dogs one male and one female, and I recently discovered how since dogs don't like the smell of Cinnamon that if I mixed both Vicks and Cinnamon (not to much just one or two shakes) that my male dog sniffs my female and walks away; and that's cause he has been trying to get her these past few days. It works on my dog and hopefully it can help with your dog.
What I did I got some Vicks, spread an thing to medium coat along my fingers, got a bit of Cinnamon and spread it along the back end of my female dog. Be careful to not to get it on her certain area just around it and around her tail and butt area.
please what is this vicks that everybody is talking about? im going crazy please be quiet ooh my head :( vicks vapor rub?
Must be nice to be a dog, just imagine how different the world would be if we could meet our partner from 3 miles away;)
