Home remedies for vomiting dogs
91How to help your vomiting dog with home remedies
Veterinarian discusses causes of vomiting
When should you consider dog vomiting home remedies?
If your dog is vomiting and you are looking for home remedies, the first thing you should do is assess if this is really something you can take care at home. There are many causes for vomiting in dogs and some can be quite serious requiring a trip to the vet. If your dog vomited once or twice, is bright and alert, and you strongly believe the vomiting is due to over eating or an abrupt diet change, then you may try some home remedies at home. However, if your dog is repeatedly vomiting, acting lethargic and there are other accompanying symptoms such as blood in stool, seek your vet's advice immediately. Following are some serious condition that warrant a vet visit.
Parvo is a potentially deadly disease in puppies, so if you pup has not been vaccinated or has not yet finished his vaccine series consider this as a possibiility. Parvo causes vomiting, bloody diarrhea often of a foul odor, lethargy, and loss of appetite.
Some dogs are prone to pancreatitis. This inflammation of the pancreas often takes place after eating a fatty meal. Dogs suffering from panreatitis need to be fasted but also require vet attention. Learn more on pancreatitis here: Dog pancreatitis, symptoms and treatment.
Some dogs may get gastro-enteritis which is another worrisome condition in dogs. Affected dogs may have vomiting, bloody diarrhea, loss of appetite and lethargy. At times, the underlying cause may not be found. Learn about this condition here: dog gastro-enteritis.
If your dog has ingested a bone, foreign objects such as socks, rocks, or corn on the cob, and is vomiting, your dog may be suffering from an intestinal blockage. Learn the symptoms of this disorder by reading; Dog Intestinal Blockage Symptoms
If your dog tries to vomit, but is unable to, you may worry about bloat, especially if your dog is deep-chested and his abdomen appears swollen.
There are many other worrisome causes of vomiting in dogs. Your dog may have ingested something potentially toxic or he may be suffering from a systemic disorder affecting the kidneys or liver. As seen, there are many causes of vomiting in dogs and it is imperative to carefully assess the situation.
On a lighter note, dogs may be vomiting because of parasites, stress, motion sickness and as mentioned earlier, abrupt diet changes and dietary indiscretions. However, if any worrisome or out of the ordinary symptoms arise along with the vomiting, do not hesitate to have him seen by a vet promptly. Chances are that it may be just a minor issue, but as with most issues, if caught promptly it likely will not evolve into a more serious and costly issue.
*Note: owners at times confuse a condition known as ''bordetella'' for vomiting. In this case, dogs cough, gag and bring up mucous or foamy fluids. To learn more about this condition and watch a video of it, see my hub on Dog Kennel Cough
** Note: if your dog vomits yellow fluid during the night, it may be from being on an empty stomach for too long. In such cases it helps to feed a bed time, early morning snack. Do not fast!

How to help your dog get through vomiting spells
Working at an animal hospital for some time, I have learned about some effective home remedies to help give some relief to vomiting dogs. However, I have also learned that while mostly effective, these home remedies may not work for all dogs, and that in some instances medical attention is required to solve the problem. Here are some basic guidelines:
- Fast the dog. This will give his gastro-intestinal tract some rest and time to recover. With food out of the way, there should be less vomiting. If the dog vomits yellow bile it simply means the dog is vomiting on an empty stomach.. Usually, a 24 hour fast is necessary for adult dogs while puppies should not be fasted for more than 12 hours.
- Give a Bland Diet. After the fasting period, when the vomiting should have ceased, take away his normal food and replace with boiled chicken and rice or boiled hamburger and rice. If you use chicken make sure it is skinless and boneless, if you use burger make sure the fat is drained off. Make the rice the bulky part of the meal. Keep giving this diet until the dog seems to get better. Then, re-introduce gradually the regular food. This should be done slowly over a few days.
- Provide Ice Chips. If your dog cannot keep water down, take the water away and try to re-offer it later. If you are concerned about dehydration try to offer ice chips . Ice chips are better tolerated than just gulping down water.
- Invest in Electrolytes.Provide some unflavored Pedialyte or Gatorade to help replenish lost electrolytes if your dog is able to keep liquids down. If not, you can freeze one or the other and offer it frozen to prevent further vomiting.
- Do a Hydration Check. Try to lift the dog's shoulder blade or back skin in a tent. If the skin returns back promptly he is well hydrated, if it takes a few seconds or worse remains lifted it means the dog needs immediate vet attention and fluids given under the skin or intravenously. To learn more about dehydration read: Dog upset stomach
- Check the Gums. Have him seen immediately if his gums turn pale, whitish, grayish or purple. Normal gums should be a healthy bubble gum pink. Try as well to press your finger on his gum. The gum should become whitish and return promptly pink. If it takes a few seconds the dog again needs to be seen ASAP.
- Magic Pink Bismuth. Ask your vet if you can try to give over the counter Pepto Bismol. He will give you dosing instructions if he thinks it may be helpful. As with any medications there may have side effects. Pepto contains aspirin so do not give if you know your dog has an allergy to aspirin. Ask your vet first!
- See a Vet. Have him seen by a vet if the dog becomes lethargic, the vomiting continues regardless of diet change or stops and then returns, other symptoms develop such as diarrhea, inappetance, or fever. The dog may have parasites, gastro-enteritis, pancreatits, a foreign body ingestion (usually along with vomiting), parvo, and many other serious conditions that need prompt vet attention.

Very informative hub and information we were looking for in our household. Elderly beagle who throws up (always in the middle of the night) mostly because no matter how hard we police her she manages to steal "food" while being walked outside. At least that what we know is part of the problem.
$2700 vet bill to try to figure out why this is a chronic problem (he removed a pound of fat from her gallbladder). Better, but probably an issue for the rest of her life.
We're going to try some of these suggestions to see if we can break the cycle.
OMG! And that $2700 vet bill couldn't suggest that? It is yellow bile, we'll be trying that. I'm too old to be getting up at 2:00 a.m. every night. Thanks!
Great! Thanks again!
gr8 hub
I have a young dog with diabetes and we found that out because he had pancreatitis. He would just vomit up bile and the poor thing was so week. It all came about as he had a bad reaction with Rimadyl and a steriod given at the same time. Even though he has a strict diet will still have days when his tummy is upset and the vomiting begins. We give him pepto because its gentle and most times he will keep that down compared to an unpleasant flavored medication.
good hub thanks for the info
HI THERE. I HAVE A MINITURE PINCHER PUPPY WHICH IS NOW 4 MONTHS OLD. SHE GOT HOLD OF SOME OF MY BILTONG PIECES AND IS THROWING UP ALOT SO WOULD IT BE POSSIBLE THAT SHE CAN JUST HAVE AN UPSET STOMAC? I AM IN THE BOKSBURG AREA AND LOOKING FOR A NUMBER FOR A VET NEAR BY. THANKS.
All these tips are helpful as long as you KNOW that the dog has only an upset tummy, but how do you know that without visiting the vet? First make sure that a vet confirms the dog is not seriously ill, then use home made remedies, not the other way round! A lot of people wasting time with tips and tricks like this and a lot of dogs are dying of, for example poisoning/ blockage / infections that could be still alive if seen earlier by the vet. You really should stress this point more in your hub that only a vet can make a reliable diagnosis if it is only an upset tummy or something worse.
I disagree, I think the author pointed out well that the remedies are not good for ALL dogs and that the dog should be seen if other worrisome signs develop. This is exactly what my vet staff told me last time my pom was sick and they had no openings for that day. He said to keep a watchful eye for exactly the same symptoms the author pointed out (lethargy, excessive vomiting etc). I gave the bland diet and she was fine just a day later. Personally, I think we cannot rush our dogs to the vet for simply a bout of vomit! We do not take our children to the hospital just because they vomit once or twice do we? It all comes down to using common sense :)
Hi - really useful article. My dog has an upset tummy from time to time. When he is recovering and I'm beginning to feed him again, I find that a little yoghurt with probiotics helps to settle things more quickly. I buy vanilla flavour (he particularly likes vanilla!) with some sugar in, which I'm sure helps perk him up more quickly.
My dog sometimes eats too fast which causes him to vomit not too long after eating.
some dogs deliberately vomit, don't they?i think that happens when they start chewing grass - think i am right. These are very good home remedies.thanks.
nice hub
Our dog started vomiting what appears to be a mucus/watery consistency. She has vomited before, but it has always been bile like and had some food, mulch, or grass in it. This is something new. Any ideas?
You shouldn't fast the dog if they're throwing up yellow fluid. It's occurs because there is an excess amount of stomach acids and the dog vomits them up to relieve their pain. My dog had this problem and we fixed it simply, just by giving her more meals throughout the day and a bowl of food at night. Fasting would only exacerbate the problem.
Ok..I'm going to worry myself sick. For the past couple days (2- 3) mY 7 mth old husky mix hasn't been wantn to eat but he would drink a lot of

Home remedies when comes quick, its the best but when the professional touch is needed better going for it always. Yet switching for a faster and effective relief one can try lot of things as mentioned here too. A good infomative hub indeed.
Excellent stuff. Thanks
My dog is vomiting to few days when he eat he don't , but when he eat and drink right away after he eat he vomiting, I don't have any money for the vet What I can do to help him in to the next 10 days when I have some money to the vet , please help!
Hi ,
Cool info our dog started being sick for what appeared to be no reason, would you believe it turned out to be an allergic reaction to new food.....
I'm going to try some of your suggestions. I'm sick and tired of waking up in the morning and having to clean up bile before heading of to work. And I'm sure my dog will feel a lot better when she's not throwing up bile anymore :-)
I have a 7 month old terrier mix, who eats anything BUT his food. Tonight he was throwing up what I believe to be bile (yellow, slimy, small bits, but nothing substancial). Many times in the past he's eaten something non-edible n thrown up or past it in his stool. I don't believe that to be the case b/c I was watching him all day. Now you've mentioned it could be b/c an empty stomach. He only ate this afternoon, but there has been food in his dish all night why wouldn't he just eat it?
BTW he has not been larthargic. He has tons of energy. He was actually more active today b/c I was home, then he has been all week while I was working.
alexandry-I just published a hub about my dog Birthday, and linked to this one. I hope this is okay. You have given the exact same instructions here as my vet gave, though my Birthday has other health issues and is 15.
I thank you for writing this marvelous article.
Hi
My 11month staffy cross was warmed 4days ago and has vomiited all his food for 48 hours now. Its his 2 nd dose but its a different brand im hoping its a bad reation to that as he is still 100% in himself but voms about 3/4 hours after dinner. For the first 24hours he had very bad uncontrolable poops like jelly!! Horrid! ive tried plain rice but that came up covered in bile and all yellow. Im worried as we rescued him and hes been on a weight gain diet coz he was too skinny and now hes looking skinny again. Ill try 24 hour fasting as hes only gone 12 hours without so far. Its very hard as he gets so hungry and you can gear his tummy rumbling i feel so bad coz he begs for his dinner when im inthe kitchen :( thanks for the info makes me feel a luttle better xx

I have a 7 month old American Bull Dog / Pit mix and he got into my trash a few days ago, maybe even 3 days. Now he has lost his appetite in the last 24 hours and doesn't want to drink much. He has vomited a foamy liquid as well has diarrhea a few times a day. He is laying around a lot and looks sad. My vet is booked for the day and I am pretty concerned about this issue. Any advice?
my husband and i went on a mini vacation two weeks ago and left my 11 lb dog boarded at his vets office for two nights and three days. after picking him up he began to vomit a day later every night for two nights. after a couple of days i found him eating the cats indoor formula food and he began to vomit again that nihgt. i have since then blocked the entry to the room where the cats food is and have restricted him to doggy biscuits and his dog food only. he has now vomited again today. his vomit was yellow and had chunks of mini bones. a treat i had given him this morning before going to work. i have given him that treat before and do not understand what may upset his stomach at this time....his gums are pinkish purple and he passed the hydration test. he is a bit clingy at the moment but still would like to know what i may do to help him feel better.
in the two nights that he had done it it was a yellowish whit saliva type of vomiting. but today it was yellowish with the mini dog treat bites. he is fine now and will give him some gatorade/water stating tomorrow. but he has eaten some food and water this far. an is acting normally. he has just never vomited in this way before or often. anything to get him back on track and not vomiting will help. i should confess that finacially it is not a good month but if needed will have to take him to the vet. any advise will be taken into consideration.
Nice post. Thanks for the info
hi my baby (dog) had puppies and they are 9 weeks old. i recently just sold two of them but still have one more ..they used to throw up yellow foam stuff (not all the time tho, maybe once) but the one i still have just threw up today i gave him a little piece of turkey earlier today and he threw up and u could see it was cause the turkey now he threw up again and it was just like liquid and then kinda foaming. He also was gonna go poop so i grabbed him put him on the potty pad and it started to come out, it was a reddish brown color but only drops as if it was liquid he tries to poop but nothing came out. he laid down i gave him water he drank alot and now hes sleeping.. does this meananything? or is it just from the food earlier? also we\when he was thrwoing up earlier he was playing wild just like always and seemed fine. can any help out on what couldve happened?

A few months ago our carin terrier cattle dog mix Sammy was throwing up once every week. He'd throw up mostly foam and he'd seem lethargic and then all of a sudden he was fine. we called the vet every time, and we did exactly what they said. It went on for a couple of weeks then late one night we woke up to find him covered in puke and he continued to puke the whole next day. So we took him to the vet and he had colitis of his intestine( the intestine was inflamed prob from something he ate) He was put on antibiotics and a powder digestive med for his food for about a month. Every now and then he gets an upset stomach so we watch what he eats carefully!!!!! If your not sure what to do always call the vet!!!
Do not give Pepto. The formula has changed in the last few years and it is longer acceptable for dogs.
It won't really help and sometimes it can make it worse for dogs.
Just to clarify...Pepto now contains a product that is the main component of aspriin. Most dogs can take low level of aspirin but people have a tendency to give lots of Pepto, thinking the more they give, the quicker it will work. Would you give your dog three aspirin? No? Well then watch how much Pepto you give. Plus my vet says the new formula doesn't work as well in dogs and it can limit what can be prescribed directly afterwards.
Do not start PEPTO without clearing the dosage with your vet. And follow the dosage exactly.
And Pepto can be deadly to cats.
Just my two cents. :)
Thanks for this hub. I will save it to favorites in case my dog gets sick again. I wish I have this information when she got sick. It cost me hundered at the vet for this advice.
my min pin is 10yrs the last 2 days every morning that there is yellow vomitting. he drinks lots of water but doesnt eat and just lay around the house. we feed him 9am before work, then around 5pm dinner.
thank you for the reply but i followed the first step you had posted about fast for 24hr and i gave him Pedialyte but did a 50/50 with water and seems to like it alot. last night i refilled his bowl, this morning it was empty and my wife says he seems alot better now. i well try the bread thing and slowly introduce his food back. but i have notice that he hasnt gone #1 or #2 so i well closely keep an eye on him. thanks for the help.
We have a amer. Bull dog about 11 to 12 mednight vomits? We have changed food, but it still happens, We started only feeding him in the morning & noon, an still (3 to 4 night a week he vomits) what should we do, we got him from the pound about a month ago.
Good Hub. Any information I can share is anecdotal based on the 1000's of conversations I've had with pet owners over the years as a holistic pet product rep in the field. Vomiting can be associated with many things and sometimes it's hard to say what a dog can get into that causes it. After all, we are talking about an animal that will eat dirty socks. But, the first question I always ask is WHAT is the dog vomiting. If it's intact kibble, I look at the food. If it's the yellow foamy bile stuff, I look at feeding behavior. If it's the bile, I suggest pushing the last feeding to later into the evening so the dogs not sitting empty all night. Otherwise I often suggest giving the dog some canned pumpkin as a late night treat before bedtime.
HELP! We have a 10 yr old mix that has been diagnosed with acute lymphoid leukemia. As there is no cure, we are basically treating her as a "hospice" patient. She has thrown up all of her food today and we're just trying to keep her comfortable. She has the appetite but nothing is staying down.....any suggestions. It's been 3 weeks since diagnosis and she is on prednizone. I know we don't have much longer.....
Thank you for the help... Now I hope my dog will stop vomiting :(

Wow, I had no idea about most of these natural at home remedies. I currently own two dogs, and I found this artical to be very helpful and informative since my cocker spaniel/poodle (cockapoo) tends to have some vomiting spells periodically.
AMAZING hubpage thanks for sharing this great info it's really helped me to get my dog from stoping vomiting thnaks for sharing ps i atually just wrote a hubpage on how to teach your dog to heal you should check it out http://hubpages.com/t/18e50e
We give small pieces of banana so as to replenish the lost electrolytes and make her recover fast.
A very helpful and well-written article. I'm going to follow you! Linda
My dog is 9 years old and she has recently started throwing up he food. It has been the same food she has been eating for years.it's only when she eats this food that she will throw it up right after she eats it. I have gave her a couple of treats and she manages to keep them down. I was wondering if it is time to change her food or should I take her to see the vet?
I took my dog to the vet and he told me she is in perfect health, We just need to change her food which we did and now she has more energy and she is like a new dog she is also having no problem keeping the new food down.
I just wanted to thank you for your advice.
Hi i have a 4 month old boxer and shes been regurtating up water/food shes updated on shots an no worms per vet. The vet suggested we change her food to canine gastrointestional He after trying several different foods she ate it for the first 2 days then stopped eating it completely but she drinks water and is hydrated. Should i try the bland diet? shes still really active she was underweight when we got her 2 months ago she was 15lbs and now shes only 20lbs please help!
No parvo and shes been on the bland diet for a couple days and i've been adding her food in with the chicken and rice and no vomiting for the last 3 days..fingers crossed. im slowly adding in the dog food but should i continue giving the rice and chicken and for how long?
Question, occasionally my big yellow lab will eat quickly and then I will find somewhere in the house that all of her food has come back up, undigested. What's that?
Thank you so much. You truly know your craft. I will check it out today.
This is good information that all pet owners need to know.
Although we do not need to rush to the Vet for every little upset, if a small animal is sick or vomiting for more than a few days, they need to be seen by a Vet (or their Vet at least needs to be made aware of the situation). For instance, some Vets are willing to run tests on a fresh stool sample without seeing them). I have noticed that animals bounce back from illness and injury much quicker than we do, so if they do not, that is cause for concern.
my Cattle Dog seems to have bouts of nausea in the very early a.m. I do feed her a few TB of canned dog food around 11 p.m., but it is not unusual for her to wake me around 5:30 or 6 a.m....frantic to run outside and eat greens - her preference is the leaves of ornamental grasses. If I DON'T feed her at night, she is apparently hyperacidic and has stomach gurgles - an antacid usually helps but I don't want to do that too often. Sometimes she sounds uncomfortable. Going on for 2 years - has been to vet with no diagnosis other than "hyperacidity". Any thoughts on what might be going on with her?
...sorry...forgot to mention that my Cattle Dog is hypothyroid (on levothyroxine), is blind from SARDS and had a bout of pancreatitis 1 1/2 yrs ago. She is fed good quality - carefully. Her weight is now good. She is 8 yrs old. I've tried everything - probiotics, aloe vera...but she still seems to feel very nauseated in the early hours. Totally puzzling.
if the dog is eating grass is that an indicator that their stomach is upset? I know it might just be an old wives tale...is there any truth to it?
I had a 14 year old dog died an the other dog is greaving she eat very little an she vomits 2 time a day ,I gave her Aspirin. I give her Egg& 2%milk to keep her going I started walking but I dont know what to go for her she lossing weight.if any body has any please tell me
This is real.. Thanks for this.
My 8 week morkie has been really lethargic lately and threw up a couple times today. She was energetic in the morning but it changed.
Chico (9mo gChihuahua) vomited yellow bile in the morning by the evening he was lethargic. I took him to emergency and they said there was a penny in his stomach and becuase was so small it was unable to pass through. I penny started to corrode and caused liver damage. I had to put him to sleep that day. I have lost my best friend, a companion and love. I miss him so much. I spent most of my time walking him and teaching him new tricks. Every time I came home he acted like I just got back from the war, he was so loving and awesome.
I need help my dog is throwing up her water and not eating!
we have an 8 month staffy who has been vomting small amounts of bile, still really excited to see you but not moving around as she would normally do. she is drinking water normally and her stools are normal do you have any idea what i could try doing before taking her to the vet.All she wants at the minute is lots of cuddles
My 1.5 year old Norwich Terrier was seen by the vet 3 weeks ago after he started refusing to walk and seemed to be in pain. Although an x-ray showed his back was probably hurting him, the blood-work showed he might be suffering from the beginning of pancreatitis. I switched to Hills prescription bland canned food from the vet, and gave him Pepcid for one week. He seemed fine--had never vomited. Now, for the last 4 days, he has vomited every morning. It's the same thing--when he goes outside in the morning, he eats grass, then vomits bile. After that, he seems pretty much the same. I am going to bring him back to the vet on Tuesday (it's a 3 day weekend and they're closed), but wondering if this sounds bad? Currently, he's running around happy, but I am afraid he has cancer, or something serious...
I have a yorkie/min poodle mix who is 2 years old. She has been vomiting at least twice a week for a while now. I took her to the vet a couple times for this and they keep telling me there is nothing wrong with her. They haven't run any tests on her. Today she threw up bile this morning twice. She was hungry so I fed her breakfast and she was fine all day. About an hour ago she threw up her dinner and bile. She has thrown up 4 times in the past hour. She will drink water just to throw up minutes later. I have never seen her this bad. My town does not have an overnight vet and the vets are closed tomorrow due to the holiday. I'm so scared there is something wrong with her.
my 14 week old puppy threw up hes food last night, then seemed ok this morning he threw up again foam looking stuff twice now hes not throwing up hes just sleeping, what could be the problem
Please do not give your dog pepto bismol
Hey, i was just wondering if you could give me some advice. My family adopted a 2-3 yearold collie mix. When we adopted him he was really thin, and we suspected he had been abused. He has been with us for around 6 months and he has settled in fine, we also have a female collie and he doesnt eat when she is in season. Lately he has been losing weight, but he still eats more than our other dog. Last night and tonight he was throwing up food his bed, or simply ignoring it. We dont have him registered at a vet, please help?

Needless to say it is 4 days later and he still is vomiting... I donāt know what to do next?

Hi, alexadry, I'd like to get your opinion on something: I volunteer at a dog shelter and one of our dogs has been having a weird problem that the vet doesn't seem to be helping. At first, she was getting sick on food, and they thought it was an intestinal problem, so they changed her food and cut out treats and had her on a medication for two weeks. That's long over, and it's been weeks now since she's had any vomiting problem, so that seems cleared up. However, we've got her on six cups of kibble per day, plus canned food for snacks, and she's keeping it all down, and yet she is losing weight like mad. She is a pile of bones. She has been wormed already in case that was the problem, but it didn't help. She has a ton of energy, she acts like nothing's wrong (she doesn't feel bad at all; she seems very happy), but whenever she is outside, she is obsessive about tracking down and eating every small stick in her vicinity. She doesn't care about grass or playing or people, just sticks. Sticks, sticks, sticks, find me more sticks. Sometimes she manages to get so much bark down that she'll have a bowel movement the next morning and it's just like mulch. Otherwise, her bowel movements seem just fine, regular when she hasn't been able to get to too many sticks. We don't understand why she keeps losing weight on so much food. She's a smallish black lab. Her coat is shiny and beautiful. She doesn't look sickly except for her bones sticking out everywhere and a warm, moderately dry nose. Do you have any ideas what this could be?
My dog been vomiting the yellow fluid for about 2-3 days now he wont eat but he drinks. He past the dehydration test. He does nothing just lay on the bed and sleep. My poor baby looks like he going to pass but he's just sleeping . plzz help !):
My 20 month old min. schnauzer has been throwing up everything she eats for a week and half now , we took her to the vets , they gave her all kinds of shots and meds to take home ,said don't let her eat till morn. when we talk on phone. Well she got in the cat food the next morn and threw it up talked to vet about half hour later. he said bring her in we need to do exploritory surgery. They did the surgery , the nurse said she will be in extreme pain and be on narcotics for a while. They took out every organ and checked or felt for obstructions and found absolutely nothing, nothing wrong in bloodwork now she is going through all this added pain for nothing and I can't imagine how bad she is going to hurt now every time she throws up I aam beside myself without her here at home and all by herself. I have given myself a headache from crying , I can't quit now I am worried about what problems we will have aused her in the future from letting them do all that to her insides. I have never had a dog I have loved this much before , she just has the best most loving personality of any dog I have ever owned.
my 4 year old mini dachshund is paralyzed in her rear legs since for over one year now. she is happy but in the past couple of months seems to vomit CLEAR liquid and foam ONCE per night, most nights. Sometimes in the middle of the night she wakes up, wretches and vomits this up (clear and foam). After a few minutes she is fine for the next 24 or more hours. no other symptoms, eats and drinks and poops well. Could it be due to paralysis causing some problem, or just empty tummy at night? She never used to have this nighttime problem before paralysis but also did not have it for first year of paralysis, just in recent months. I don't want to spend more money on her to diagnose this since I spent over 5 thousand on back surgery that failed.
Yes I use to give my dog Pepto 1/2 tab for upset stomach and my holistic vet said not to because it does contain aspirin and she is a seizure dog on Phenobarbital 16.5 mg a day. She is also on special diet Natural Balance limited ingredients and grain free everything. She hasn't had much problem with vomiting lately, but today she went out and ate grass and came in and threw it up. I'm wondering if there is anything else I can give her for upset stomach? She is also allergic to lactose which most probiotics are made from lactose acidopholis so I can only give her one digestive enzymes that is lactose free and she is also allergic to pumpkin, gives her gray diarrhea.
we adopted a dog from mexico about 6 months ago and it has been great she is 2 years old and a chihauaX(mabye jack)

So my almost 2 month old boxer/husky puppy has been throwing up yellow vomit in the past two mornings! Yesterday he vomited about 5 times and what looked like pieces of a chewy bone we got for his teething and something else I could not recognize. And then this morning hes thrown up twice so far what I think are pieces of non stuffed animals fur(he destroyed them and I had to take the stuffing out). He has had diarrhea the past 3 to 4 days. We have changed his food like about two weeks ago and he's eating and drinking regularly. He's only thrown up in the early to late mornings when he hasn't eaten or drank yet. And after he vomits he's fine with lots of energy then takes a couple naps during the day. I'm wondering should I take him to the vet or wait it out another day and take away his animals? He's had his first set of shots but not dewormed. Thanks for any help:)
I just wanted to tell you that I had originally found your site because my 9 mo. old puppy had regurgitated then vomited for two days. We had just gotten her from the pound and I didn't know what to do. I read about the chicken and rice and cooked up some for her. I fed it to her for a day and she was back to normal.
Now, for the MIRACULOUS part, I have a geriatric cat (about 17 1/2) who has been skin and bones, literally, for a few years. Tried meds (slight thyroid problem), nothing helped. I had read that elderly cats only eat stuff with strong smells and tried a high calorie booster. Well, apparently, not so! When I had made chicken and rice for Yolee ( my puppy), I had put in one large, (Knorr, I believe) chicken bullion cube with about a cup or so of water and the chopped chicken ( a lb or so) and left-over rice from the Chinese restaurant I always order from. My kitty, Miki, actually ate it! I am happy to report that I now make the exact same thing for my beloved cat but I use the food chopper to mince the chicken before I cook it. She has been eating this for two+ weeks now and hasn't eaten this much in years. I noticed today that she actually seems to be getting some meat (muscle) on her bones. I want to THANK YOU WITH ALL MY HEART!!!!!!! She's always been finicky and would only eat dry food, except she would lick the gravy from canned cat food. She'd never actually eat the meat part. I know your blog is about dogs but, I'm convinced, you have helped my Miss Kitty (aka Miki) regain some of her health and provided her more time with us! I am forever grateful and I think what you are doing to help folks (and critters) is an amazing thing!
I have a 2yr old boxer that has been diagnosed with a sensitive stomach so I finally got him straightened out with chicken and rice dog food with no additives and had been doing good since January but last week he chewed on wood and started throwing up after he eats! He will go a while before he does this and it is food like a tube shape that I saw you mentioned in another post. The Vet had even given some pills for night to help as needed but they aren't working! I am wondering if his stomach is inflamed and if you have any suggestions before I go spend money I really don't have for them to tell me its his sensitive stomach again. Thanks for any suggestions!
Took Kilo to the Vet and they did a barium X-ray that shows he has a megaesphogus! Not very good news especially since there seems to be no cure just different options to help the food go to the stomach! He's a white boxer and that's one of his special needs it just took a little longer to catch it! But I love him and am gonna do what I can to help his problem!
my puppy is puking out foamy white stuff and pooping out blood. do you know what this is called?? and how i can get rid of it???
I have a 11 week old staffy I have only had him 5 days he hasn't had. Any ov his ingections or anything I am booked in for the vet friday, we got him off a friend who has taken him outside walking then she sold him to someone else then got him back now. We have him, we haven't let him outside as like he said hasn't had any shots, I'm concerend about him, he hasn't eaten much over the last 2 daays, and his nose is relly dry, he is drinking puppy milk and water tho and hasn't been sick but I'm just scared incase there's something rong with him,
My dog was vomiting bile and I gave him pepto and no more vomiting but still won't drink or ready I make him walk to go potty but he is very weak made poop finally lets me feed him but still very weak walks like a drunk :(
what do i do when my dog eats the foam out of my couch and tries to eat, but pukes it back up ,will drink, not sure about bowel movement yet
I have an adult pomeranian that burbs after eating or drinking. Food is out for her all day. She eats when she wants. She eats nothing but dog food (science diet small bites) and pepperoni treats. She is throwing up bile pretty regularly. She just threw up twice. Alot of liquid never any food. What do I need to look for in her habits to see what might be causing this?
hi my shitzu potchi a 1 year and 8 months dog has been vomiting yellow brown liquid with some saliva for the last 4 days. she doesnt have fever even diarrhea and she's still barking as usual but always want to take a nap.she ask for food but after a couple of hours (maybe 5 hrs) vomit it out. what could be the problem? please help :(
potchi is my first dog and was treated by the whole family just like a baby
i already gave my dog home remedies and it help a lot. we also went to the vet and the vet injected some antibiotics. can i ask what to give my dog for her to gain energy? thank you!
btw she's not dehydrated and vomiting decreased a lot.
My yorkie has been sick for about week. He is drinking water a lot and throwing it up right away. Also he was having diarrhea last couple of days. His stool was jelly like watery red brown and not eating well. I checked his temperature making sure he is having fever or nor. His temperature was 100 which is normal. Surprisingly, he was normal yesterday like having so much energy and eating well, so I thought he had tummy problem. But this morning, he was drinking water a lot and throwing it up again and was crying. Looked very uncomfortable, so I brought him a vet right away. He had tests and exams, and my vet suggested to take xray because she said that my pup might swallow something and it is bothering him. If there is blockage and then my pup needs surgery. Thankfully, there wasn't problem with stomach. So she gave my pup some medication and shot. Total cost was around $450.
Actually, I was guessing correct that he is having tummy problem. But I'd recommend you bring your pet to vet first to just make sure there is no serious thing going on.
the dog in this picutre looks exactly like my lillie, we rescued her a few years ago.
My dog is diabetic. Shes been having diarrhea since 11:00am yesterday and I had to feed her to give her insulin. Since then she's been drinking a lot and vomiting water and mucus. I was told to never take away her water but In this case I think I need too. Can you give me your opinion? I'm trying to get her through the night and I'm bringing her to the vet first thing in the morning.
If I can't go buy rice is just bread okay as a bland diet? And are there any other foods I can feed my golden retriever? She has been vomiting about a couple times. You can see her dog food In the vomit. So please answer soon about what other foods are bland for dogs

Thank you so much for this article - I was hoping for your opinion about my situation. I have a 3 yr old husky/shepherd mix who weighs about 45 lbs - so on the smaller side for both breeds. She had thrown up in the middle of the night on two consecutive nights. Just one round of vomiting each night. The vomit was only dog food - very thick and rounded in a mound on the floor. It smelled just like dog food - not particularly foul. It was well chewed - no actual pieces of food. There was a blade of grass in one of them. Then the third day, I didn't let her eat later in the day as she had been. I also watched her in the yard and confirmed that she had at least one bowel movement. I actually looked through her bowel movement to make sure there were no foreign objects - it was fibrous with possible grass material and smelled beyond foul (more than normal). That night she did not vomit, the next night no vomit. But, last night vomit again - the same consistency. She seems to be well hydrated - can keep water down. She plays, runs around, acts happy and her normal self all day. She ate well this morning, but I am considering fasting her per your article's advice. Have you ever heard of this before? What would you do?
(And no, I cannot believe I have spent the last several days sorting through dog vomit and bowel movements?! We really love our pup!)
Thanks for your quick reply. I refer to her as a "pup" but she is actually 3+ years old. She actually eats very slowly - just taking a mouthful at a time, dropping it on the floor, then picking up each individual piece to chew and swallow - we actually find her dainty approach humorous. I am definately fasting her - wish I had read this before we fed her this morning! We'll see how she does, thanks for the advice! (also, I am not super panicked as she still acts normal and happy.)
I have a Yorkie and she is 7 months and she is throwing up and its pinkish and it had some of her food in it, what should I do?
I've a 5 year old mix breed (some alsation and some sharpei) she was fine last night but this morning she is lethargic, disorientated and weak. Her gums are white with only a light pinkish shade, she drinks water then shortly after it just pours back out looks slimy. She is on Rymidal for pain, born with hip displasia but hasn't had one in weeks as the weather was fine and she didn't complain about the hip as she usually does. Also I checked for dehydration but her skin went back immediately.
My four-year-old female corgi/jack russell mix has been regurgitating her food for the past two days. I feed her three times a day (due to her brother's bile issues) and she seems to be keeping every other meal down. She never gets sick so this is really worrying me. I hand fed her the last two meals since she has a tendency to eat too fast, and I stuck to plain dry food. She kept her 'lunch' down, but threw up her dinner about 15 minutes after eating it. Please help!
my puppy is sick..he hasn't eaten for 3days now..he manage to drink small amount of water but doesn't want to eat..his belly is turning yellowish and he sometimes vomits..i'm so scared..i don't have enough budget to take him to a vet right away and also there is no nearby vet clinics around here..what should i do? and what probably causes it? i don't want to lose him..pls any info will do..thanks!

I have a 16 year old male poodle. very healthy two weeks ago he stopped eating and started throwing up yellow bile. Took him to the vet he was dehydrated, spent 3 day in hospital given Iv and meds. home for a week and he threw up bile again, back to vets more meds given. Now one week later and he has thrown up again. Should I go back to vets, should I worry? Spending lots on vets, but if that's what I have to do!! He is eating running around doesnt appear to be sick. What should I do??
Hi i hve a question my dog has been trowing up white slimmy foamy vomit, but when she does she coaughs or gags?she eats well, drinks well, and is full of energywhat could she have?
my two dogs out of four are vomiting after they eat. I had them at vet. twice now. They are on ampoxilin, pain meds. and science diet food, dry. I missed the pills by two hours late yesterday, my older dog twelve, went into kithcen and vomited. What should I do next, they look so healthy and are acting fine. The pills will only last three more days!!!
you vet should suggest more exams in order to find out why your dogs are vomiting...
Blood tests, X.Rays and Ultrassonography are good starting points if they do not help endoscopy could also be used.
In general, if a dog is vomiting it should be treated with injectable medications until it resumes vomiting, normally there“s no use in giving pills to a dog who will throw them up a few moments after...
I have a 9month old mix and she just started being in heat. She threw up twice yesterday and once today. Is that a normal symptom of being in heat?
For those of you who also have a pup with overactive stomach acid (where they vomit bile after not eating for an extended amount of time), I'm going to try this product: http://www.lilyofthedesert.com/our_products/item/h
Maybe a half teaspoon in the morning to see how it works? Can any of you please let me know if you've tried something like this and what the results were? I have to hand feed my pup three times a day on a schedule and he never wants to eat - very frustrating. Hoping this will help!
Thanks!
Hi, wondering if you can help. I have a 2 and a half yr old pit bull. He gets fed at night.(mixture of rice cooked with ground beef and lamb.) in the morning he gets some Evo chow. His water is changed twice daily. He may even get more chow around 2pm. Within the past couple weeks I have noticed, in the morning, his dinner thrown up on the lawn. I don't see this every day, more like 2 or 3 times a week. He has been eating this rice dinner all his life with no problem. I reduced the amt and am thinking of switching dinner to lunchtime to see if this helps. Behaviour and appetite is fine. If I didn't see the vomit in the mornings I would never know there is anything wrong.
Thanks for replying so quickly. He threw up again some time last night even though I changed dinner to lunch time. He ate chow at dinner time and what was interesting was that he threw up the rice meal. So I guess if the rice is the problem I should stop it . I know he eats too fast, but he's a pit! What do you think about me soaking his chow in water or broth and eliminating rice? I mean does he really need rice anyway?
My mini schnazer threw up yellow mucus and then hour later had diarrhea. He has not lost his appettite and he is still drinking water. should I be concerned?
Hi
My 9 1/2 year old pommeranian started vomiting yesterday. Lots of yellow. It seemed to get better last night but started back this morning after drinking water. He is lethargic and doesn't even want to go out to the bathroom.
I was reading earlier comments about the yellowness of the liquid and that it is because he is vomiting on an empty stomach. This makes sense to me because he really didn't eat much on Wednesday or Thursday and nothing at all today - Friday. He has no interest in food just a few sips of water every now and then. My questions is, how do I get him to eat so solve the empty stomac issue.
Thanks!!
My 11 week puppy was fine thos morning and then threw up this afternoon. Now he looks really sad and doesnt want to do much. He has his first two shots and takes his next shot on Friday
What should we do
My one year old bichon/yorkie mix has been vomiting for 3 days. The first day she threw up 3 times in a row 4-5 hours after she ate. I fasted her the second day and today I fed her this morning and she just puked 3 times in a row again. Any suggestions on what to try first?
my 4 month diabetic yorky was very sick all week. but now is fin except her h6ard stools are yellow since 3 days, what could that mean, sh6e also as pancreitis,
We use Phytomucil religiously for gags and runs. I like it because its an herbal remedy and actually works.
my dog has been taking meds the past couple of days for kennel cough, 2 days ago found segments of tapeworms in his poop. so called the vet again and they gave me a pill that would kill the tapeworm. he was feeling fine, til this morning. he has thrown up a couple of times and its just yellow foam. should I call the vet and see or just wait til later on in the day if he starts to feel better. he is a pomeranian, so just a small dog.
Hi! I've read your article while searching for home treatments for vomiting dogs. My dog has suddenly started vomiting this morning. Vomit looks like saliva and no solids. She drinks small amount of water but vomits again. Now, she's weak and we can't force her to drink/eat anymore. Aside from providing hydration, what medication can we give her?
My 6 year old cocker spaniel has been vomiting every night at four am for a week now. I have been down this road before with him, as two years ago he vomited every night for about a month. I quit giving him raw hide and switched his food to sensitive stomach food and he stopped. Now it is happening again and I don't know what to try. He has hypertension and takes medicine twice a day for that, so do you think it could be related to his blood pressure being too high? His throw up is sometimes with food in it and sometimes with bile, depending on of he ate late at night or not. He doesn't act sick and is fine the next day. I may try the late night snack thing. O, I also just leave his food out and he eats periodically throughout the day. Please help, at this point I'm tired of spending money on vets.
For the past week, in the middle of the night my pomeranian has woken me up because she does a little scream, then tries to vomit, but nothing comes up. A few minutes later she's fine, and for the rest of the day she acts normally. She eats, drinks, poops--even chases the cat. I am worried about her but due to my husband loosing his job, money is tight and if she's fine 99% of the time, I am not sure if I can afford an expensive vet bill if it turns out to be nothing.
Any idea what this could be? Could she have eaten something that could be stuck floating around in her stomach?
She hasn't been around other dogs, but there are some foxes in the area. She has been throughly vaccinated. She hasn't vomited, only retches.
But, I stuffed her Kong with treats before bed last night, and she was fine! I guess it was like one of the first comments on this thread... Just acid reflux. I just didn't think the acid could make her cry so badly!
Thanks for this post!
Help please! I have a 5 mth old boxer utd on all shots and wormers. She got into the trash 4 nights ago and ate cheesy noodle hamburger pasta and the next threw up nothing but the noodles and liquid heaving all day. I fasted her water only (she didn't drink much) for the day. But has since at least 2-3 times everyday since throws up chewed up food mixed with grass the consistency of can food. She passes all the dehydration tests and is still active like nothings wrong and having good bowel movements. I only feed her a small amount at a time replenishing it as she eats. She chews constantly ever since she was 10 weeks old and started going outside on every pinecone and stick in the yard. Redid change her food a few days before the trash incident from purina puppy chow to beneful
My shintzu dog just recover from Kenneth cough, eat lots of medicine. Now he don't have appetite, not eating anything. Canned food, raw n even boil. All no use. What should I do ? He,s getting thinner n thinner
My dog is 10 yrs old, he normaly eats and is able to keep him food down, I fed him earlier hours later he threw up and the food was undigested. He's drinking and asking to eat. How sould i treat him?
My little pug is throwing up every time we feed her and dosen't wont to be around us so ineed help figuring it out
I have a nearly 2 year old Maltipoo that has been vomitting since yesterday! It started out gradual then very intense. She is lathargic, has nothing elst to throw up but is still trying to vomit. She is very sick. She recently had her yearly parvo shot and has been wormed etc. rabies shots and all. But this seems like parvo. How can I hydrate her until the vet opens tomorrow?
Hi. Alexadry. It's been a week now since she had her shots. Her vomitting just started yesterday evening. The ice cubes was a good suggestion & frozen pedialyte. She is still bad but I gave her 1/2 tsp. of Pepto Bismol and that stopped her vomitting!! It really did work, BUT she still wont eat or drink anything at all and is still lethargic looking. and I know she is dehydrated. I am going to take her to her vet as soon as the office opens up!! Thank you for your help.

Leah Kay, The Pup 3 years ago
Recentely our little Leah was getting sick and throwin up all the time. At first it ony was a little bit, but eventually was getting worse. Took her to the vet and they said she had a partcial blockage. We had to give her pedialite for 24 hours. She now is on Purina's dog food for sensitive stomach. That stuff smells awfull!!! Like dead fish.
Anyways, we now have to hand feed her and no more denta-bones or rawhides.
I liked you story and will be helpful for future with Leah! Thanks!!
