How to Treat Minor Cases at Home

Wondering how to cure your dog's upset stomach? After working for a veterinary hospital for some time, I have learned about some effective vet-approved, natural home remedies for a dog's upset stomach. We offered these tips as an option to clients when we had no same-day appointments and dogs were suffering from a minor upset stomach. Often, these clients failed to re-schedule because their dogs recovered nicely using these vet-approved dog upset stomach home remedies using a home-made diet boasting ngredients straight from their kitchen's pantry!

If followed carefully, these natural home remedies may help sooth your dog's self-limiting upset stomach or even heal it in the best cases. However, while many cases may benefit from a home remedy, there are some instances, where home remedies are not sufficient and where medical treatment is the only choice. Please see your vet if your dog is acting sick, lethargic and not acting as its normal self. In some cases, the upset stomach may be caused by an underlying cause that needs promptly addressed. These are cases where an upset stomach may be due to serious conditions such as Parvo virus, an instestinal obstruction, gastro-enteritis and pancreatitis.

*Note: These vet-approved home remedies for a dog upset stomach may therefore help those dogs that have an indigestion due to an abrupt diet change or underwent a recent dietary indiscretion. Do not try home remedies for your dog's upset stomach if he is acting lethargic, vomiting continuously, having continuous squirts of diarrhea. dog has bloody stools, and is getting quickly dehydrated. This is for mild cases only mostly due to dietary indiscretions or abrupt diet changes. Seek your vet if your dog is sick.

Signs your dog is suffering from an upset stomach:

  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Profuse salivation
  • Desire to eat grass
  • Loss of appetite
  • Passing gas
  • Gurgling noises from the stomach

*Note: if your dog's stomach appears distended, your dog is pacing nervously, drooling and retching without producing vomit, see your vet immediately as this may be bloat, a life-threatening condition seen more often in deep-chested dogs.

Checking Your Dog's Hydration Levels

If your dog is vomiting or has diarrhea, you need to make sure your he is not becoming dehydrated. Vomiting and repeated liquid diarrhea, may lead to a fast loss of fluids especially when continuous. This is one of the biggest problems dogs suffering from vomiting and diarrhea face and the most dangerous. Keep in mind that small dogs and puppies tend to dehydrated at a quicker rate than larger dogs. To check your dog;s hydration levels check the following:

  • Check for Skin Elasticity

The skin is quick to lose elasticity in a dehydrated dog because it starts lacking moisture. Among the tests we used to do to check for hydration levels was checking for skin elasticity. To check your dog's level of skin elasticity do the following: gently lift the skin on the back or between shoulder blades in a tent using two fingers. If the skin snaps back quickly into position; good. If it delays or worse, stays lifted then the dog needs to be re-hydrated quickly and often this entails subcutaneous fluids from the vet.

  • Check the Gums

It is good practice to check the gums as well; in a well-hydrated and healthy dog typically the gums are a nice salmon pink and coated with a slimy film of saliva. Run your finger over your dog's gums and check for sliminess. Dry or tacky gums are a warning sign of dehydration.

Another way we used to assess a dog's level of dehydration was by checking the dog's gum capillary refill time (CRT). When dehydration takes place, a reduction of the normal volume of circulating blood takes place. The gums are the best place to look for this. To check for capillary refill time do the following: press on your dog's gums with your fingertip until the the area becomes white, then remove your finger and count how long it takes for the gum's surface to return to its normal pink color. Generally, the normal refill time in dogs is less than two seconds. The average capillary refill time in a dog is 1.5 seconds. More than that may suggest the blood is not flowing normally.

Keep food away for about 24 hours

Fasting Your Dog

Now that you have checked your dog's hydration levels, and your dog checked out fine, you can proceed to fasting your dog. This means picking up all food and no longer giving any treats. The purpose of this is to allow the dog's gastro-intestinal tract to rest and recover if inflamed. Dogs may do this naturally by losing their appetite for a few hours after being sick, but not all dogs are this sick and eating may further upset their stomach. Fasting your dog for a few hours will do no harm and in this case it it considered therapeutic.Indeed, according to veterinarian Nancy Scanlan in an article for Veterinary Practice News "Complete or modified fasting is a natural part of a wild canine's diet and fasting or some form of reduced calories also benefits their health. ".

The general protocol for dogs vomiting or with diarrhea is to fast for a minimum of 12 to 24 hours. Puppies and small dogs should not be fasted for more than 12 hours, usually the whole night will suffix. The fast will consist of no food or treats. The purposes of fasting is to allow the stomach to rest. With no food to digest, the dog's stomach gets some time to rest and hopefully recover. If you own a small dog or young puppy, rubbing a little bit of pancake syrup on the dog's gums may help keep energy levels up and prevent glucose level from dropping if a 12 hour fast is needed.

Avoid your dog gulping too much water at once.

Keeping Your Dog Hydrated

Often, water may further upset a vomiting dog further exacerbating dehydration and creating significant problems. This takes place when dogs have an upset stomach and they gobble down large quantities all at once. Shortly, all the water comes back up and the dog is back to square one.

Offering ice chips may be a good alternative to allowing the dog to gobble down water, at least until the dog feels better. You can also try to freeze some Gatorade and offer it to lick. If your dog had not vomited for at least 4 hours, you can try to give some a little bit of water in small quantities. Don't let your dog gulp lots of water at once; try 1/4 to 1/2 cup an hour depending on your dog's size (unless otherwise directed by your veterinarian).

If your dog is able to keep down some water, you can then try offering some clear liquids such as plain Pedialyte, Gatorade, apple juice diluted 50:50 with water, or chicken/beef broth -with no onion or garlic- diluted 50:50 with water.

Vet-approved remedies for dog diarrhea and upset stomach

Dog Upset Stomach Bland Diet

After the 12-24 hour fast if your dog has still not vomited and has been able to keep down small quantities of liquids, you may then offer a bland diet. A bland diet is a diet that is easy on the dog's stomach similar to the BRAT diet in humans. Following is the recipe:

Dog Upset Stomach Bland Diet Recipe

You will need:

  • Boiled rice
  • White Meat Chicken or extra-lean hamburger

The recipe must contain 75% boiled white rice, and 25% low fat protein (the chicken or ground beef). The rice is the bulk of the meal for the purpose of binding while the meat is mostly there to work as an enticing ingredient to encourage the dog to eat. If you choose chicken, make sure the skin is taken off and there are no bones. If you choose hamburger, make sure the meat is lean and the fat is drained off after cooking. Fat may cause pancreatitis and exacerbate a dog's upset stomach.

*Note: Do not add any oils, fats or spices to the bland diet! Offer the bland diet in 3-4 small meals throughout the day for a few days until your dog is feeling better.

According to veterinarian Jon Rappaport in an article for Pet Place.com you can start by giving a small amount such as a tablespoon and if it is successfully kept down you can then offer more two hours later. If still doing well on it, the quantity can be gradually increased and so the frequency, therefore, you would go from 2 Tbsp every 2 hours, to ½ cup to a cup every 3 or 4 hours.

What if My Dog Does not Like the Bland Diet?

If you do not have any rice and chicken or ground beef or if your dog does not like the bland diet, you can try to feed some meat-based baby food with no onion or garlic in it. This is very bland and most dogs find it tasty. Warming the canned food up or adding a little bit of warm broth( with no onion or garlic in it) may make the food further enticing. Keep in mind though that a lack of appetite suggests your dog is not feeling very well which is indicative that a vet visit is a better option than trying to force your dog to eat.

An Extra Bonus For Diarrhea:

Adding a dollop of plain yogurt or cottage cheese will help sooth and the inflamed stomach and intestines, especially if the dog upset stomach is accompanied by diarrhea. Probiotics such as Fortiflora or Culturelle may be also helpful for diarrhea so to promote the growth of good bacteria. (See more about these below) Plain canned pumpkin (without spices, not the pie mix) may further help a dog with diarrhea as it firms up the stools. One to four tablespoons depending on your dog's size would help.

Not looking forward to cooking? Soothing Diets for Dog Upset Stomach

If you are not to eager to cook up the bland diet, or you want to keep your dog on a diet for dogs with sensitive tummies, there are commercial diets that are quite bland. According to veterinarian Debra Promovic the following are some commercial bland diets for dogs:

  • Hill'sprescription diet i/d
  • Iams Recovery Diet
  • Provision EN
  • WalthamLow Fat

What About Dog Upset Stomach Over the Counter Meds?

While there are some over the counter medications that may prove helpful for dog diarrhea (see what medications veterinarian Adrienne Mulligan recommends for diarrhea in the video above) it is best to err on the side of caution when using these. Always consult with your vet before trying any over the counter meds. The most common over-the-counter meds used to treat diarrhea in dogs are Immodium A/D (loperamide)and Pepto/Bismol. While these are for the most part safe when given in the correct dosage, they may cause side effects.

Loperamide, for instance, can cause allergies in dogs sensitive to it and should be used with caution in dogs suffering from hypothyroidism, kidney disease and Addison's disease. It should not be given to elderly patients or severely debilitated animals dogs unless recommended by a vet. Because dogs suffering from diarrhea due to ingestion on toxins or presence of bacteria must clear their system from such toxins and bacteria, products such as loperamide should be avoided. According to veterinarian Dawn Ruben, due to the potential for overdose, dogs weighing under 20 pounds should not be preferably given loperamide in liquid form and not tablets. Constipation, bloating, and sedation are known side effects of loperamide.

And what about Peptol-bismol (kaopectate)? Not everyone is aware that pepto contains salicylate. Just two tablespoons of Pepto contains as much salicylate as an aspirin, according to veterinarian Mark Papich. As other meds, they can cause allergies to sensitive dogs. While no serious complications are associated with the use of pepto, there seems to be no agreement that it is helpful either, further explains Mark Papich. A darkening of the dog's stools after giving pepto is considered normal.

Dog Upset Stomach: Vet approved protocols

Monitoring Your Dog

Now that your dog was checked for dehydration, fasted, offered liquids and a bland diet you must monitor your dog for progress -hopefully- or signs of worsening. So monitor your dog carefully during this time. Do not hesitate to have your dog seen if he becomes lethargic, laying around and not acting its normal self. Ensure that following the bland diet your dog has no more vomiting episodes and that the stools are better formed.

What if My Dog Still Has an Upset Stomach?

If your dog is still having an upset stomach despite the fasting and bland diet it often means that your dog's upset stomach is severe and home remedies will not work, requiring a more intense treatment such as meds from your vet. It also often means that there may be a problem that needs to be addressed such as intestinal parasites, presence of protozoans such as giardia or even serious conditions such as a dog intestinal obstruction, parvo virus which is common in puppies, gastro-enteritis, pancreatitis, a dog intestinal blockage and other conditions affecting the gastro-intestinal tract. At times, other organs may be affected such as the liver and kidneys. So have your dog seen if you think your dog has more than a mild upset tummy and don't try home remedies.

A seen, the natural home remedy of a bland diet may be therefore helpful in many cases, however there are those cases that need immediate vet attention. Usually, your dog's behavior will give you hints on what to do. Chances, are if your dog is not acting right the vet may need seen the same day.

What if the Bland Diet Worked?

If the bland diet worked and your dog is feeling better (no more vomiting/ more solid looking bowel movements) then it is time to switch again to a regular diet. Be very careful; countless people switch to fast only to cause another upset stomach! Following are some guidelines:

How to Reintroduce Regular Food

At this point gradually add the regular diet and taper off the rice meal. This is best done very gradually and slowly over the course of a few days. For example: offer 75% of a the rice bland diet with 25% of the dog's regular kibble and give it for three days. If the does well, then offer half rice diet and half dog kibble in a 50-50 mixture for another three days. If your dog seems comfortable then start feeding 100% of your dog's regular diet again. This is the same protocol used when introducing any new food to your dog.

*Note: if your dog tends to get an upset stomach when on its normal food, consider asking your vet to switch foods. At times, a special diet for sensitive stomachs may be recommended such as Hill's I/D or a home-made diet.

What About Using Probiotics?

Probiotics are great for restoring good bacteria in your dog's gut. If your dog has been prescribed antibiotics , these may have wiped away the good bacteria along with the good. There are several types of probiotics on the market, Prostora made by Iams , Proviable made from Nutramax Labs and Fortiflora made from Purina. These are all pretty good. Prostora comes in tasty tablets, Proviable comes in paste, and Fortiflora is sprinkled on food.

*Note: some dog owners obtain good results from giving low fat, active culture yogurt(look for the names of active bacteria in the ingredients) with no colors or artificial sweeteners added. Generally, 1-2 teaspoons given twice daily will suffix.

There is a bit of controversy of when to give these probiotics if the dog has been taking antibiotics. The problem is that if probiotics are given with antibiotics, they may be ineffective because they kill good and bad bacteria. Some vets, therefore, may decide to prescribe them only after the dog has finished the whole course. According to veterinarian Lorie Houston quoted " "Using antibiotics, such as metronidazole, with probiotics is a somewhat controversial topic. Some veterinarians recommend using one or the other but not both. Others feel that the two products can be used together. In this case, the worse case scenario is that the antibiotics might kill some or all of the bacteria contained in the probiotic, rendering the probiotic ineffective." Some vets still recommend giving the probiotics several hours before or after the administration of antibiotics to prevent this from happening.

If your dog has a sensitive stomach and repeated diarrhea, it may be helpful to get some probiotics to help him restore some healthy bacteria. Keep in mind though that because probiotics are live they must be stored in a cool place and they have a short shelf life. If you are planning to re-utilize some probiotics for your dog upset stomach, check the expiration date to make sure they are still fresh..

Thank you so much for the tip. My dog has been to the Vet she is on Metronidazole and Pepcid. Her diarrhea has stopped and her stools are better formed but when fed bland food and water she feels like vommitting after an hour or so she will calm down. There are lots of gas in her tummy. The Vet haven't given anything for it do you any idea as to what to do.

Thanks

The stools forming well are a good sign, but perhaps her stomach is yet not ready to accept food. It could be she gulps it down too fast or it just too much for her now. As you can read from my article above, water can also further upset an already irritated stomach.

Did she fast already? It may help to give her tummy a bit of rest and instead of offering water, some ice cubes she will lick may help her stay hydrated while not irritating her stomach as water. Keep an eye on her hydration levels at all times as described above.

Perhaps you can try an alternative to the boiled rice and chicken. A little bit of meat based baby food (with no onion or garlic in it) given every now and then, may be more subtle on her stomach. The key is giving it very sloowly so she will not gulp it down or eat too much at once.

Did they do an x-ray to rule out an obstruction? Did they come to a diagnosis? Please consult with your vet if she does not seem to be getting better as this may be sign there is something more going on. Best wishes for a speedy recovery!

shanti smith 2 years ago

Thanks for replying back so quickly. Yes, I forgot to mention the vet did a blood test and X-ray. The test was ok

They cause of the abdominal pain is still not known except that she was dehydrated and put her on IV for the nite in the hospital. They gave her Metoclopramide CRI, Metronidazole 250mg PO BID and Buprenex for the nite it seemed to settle her and gave her some food in the morning.

She looked fine and we took her home yesterday and we were asked to continue giving her the antibiotic and pepcid. It was only after I gave her the tablets and drinks that she started to have this vomitting spasm. It is more like she was burbing to release gas there is nothing coming out only gas.

Do you think I should start fasting her and just giving her only water for now. I am suppose to give her the tablets twice daily - every 12 hours.

I have given her the ice cube she enjoys licking it and

have given her little bit of boiled rice with a bit of yogurt will see if this settle her tummy.

Thanks

I would really ask your vet about this. It could be the medications are causing her problems. I thought she had nausea and vomiting but now that I read this last comment it looks like she is just retching and gagging without producing anything. In particular if your dog is a deep chested large breed this can be a sign of bloat which is a medical emergency. You can read more about this here:http://www.peteducation.com/article.cfm?c=2+1571&a

Do not want to concern you, but a call to the vet would be the best since he/she has been treating her and knows best. Hope all clears up soon..

Thanks for the tips and reminders. My dog started out going to a holistic vet which I'm thankful for. She had a "holistic" vet which was great for her. He never gave her any shots that weren't required by law. When he did give her shots he'd give her a liquid herbal mixture to help her system deal with the shot. I think all vets should be holistic vets but I'm prejudiced.

HOPING THIS REMEDY WORKS....WE HAD JUST GOTTEN BACK FROM PICKING THE DOGS UP FROM THE KENNEL...THEY WERE THE ONLY DOGS THERE THAT WEEK....MY DOG PLAYS WITH THE OTHER DOGS LIKE NOTHING IS WRONG BUT HE SPITS UP / THROWS UP ABOUT EVERY 8-12 HOURS, ITS BEEN MOSTLY FLUIDS - IVE BEEN HOLDING BACK IN FEEDING HIM ANY FOOD AT ALL...HES SMART ENOUGH TO KNOW IF HE EATS ALOT, CHANCES ARE ITS COMING OUT 1 END OR THE OTHER.....HES BEEN DRINKING WATER, BUT I WILL TRY THE ICE CHIPS. I JUST WENT TO THE STORE TO GET SOME RICE......HOPE ALL GOES WELL

alexadry profile image

alexadry Hub Author 2 years ago

Steve, is he coughing up fluids more than vomiting? Sometimes coughing up mucous is confused with vomiting. Coughing up is more as a gagging, retching sound and the fluid comes right up. Vomiting on the other hand creates forceful stomach contractions. Does he do this right after drinking? It could be he is drinking too much too fast. I would give ice chips for now. Is he up to date on his boredetella shot?

hey ..hi mydog dont want to eat nothing .... n when she tries she vomits ...wat can i get her to feel better

alexadry profile image

alexadry Hub Author 2 years ago

Jesse I think your dog should be seem by a vet, with all these symptoms showing up all at once, there may be something systemic going on and only a vet can tell.

Judy, a dog that is sick to its stomach normally would not want to eat anything and if she is vomiting after eating it means that her stomach is not ready to take food. Giver her tummy a rest as suggested in my article above and then try to offer a bland diet.

However, have her seen if she becomes lethargic, does not improve or gets worse. There may be an obstruction going on or something else needing prompt vet attention. Do not delay treatment if you feel something is not right.

Great article....woke up this am with evidence my red bone coon hound had been sick during the night. She is still not able to keep things down. I am going to try the fast...and just sent my hubby to get the yogurt and pediylite.

Again...thanks for the tips and if she is not better we will be off to the vet. :)

Hope your dog is better by now, I am sorry I was not able to get to this in timely matter. I always suggest to have a dog seen if he has an upset stomach and is acting lethargic, laying around, not eating or having bloody diarrhea, or appears dehydrated. If he seems like he is not acting like his normal self( playful, alert) then a prompt vet visit is recommended.

omg my dog won't stop licking everything and eating leaves

WHAT DO I DO

we tired rice she THREW UP UGHHH

alexadry profile image

alexadry Hub Author 2 years ago

If your dog is licking everything and eating leaves very likely she is nauseous. It is too early to feed her at this point. You need to fast her first and then feed the rice when her stomach is settled. This is why a 12-24 hour fast is recommended before giving any food. Eating leaves and grass is a way dogs try to find relief from upset tummies, since they cause vomiting. I would consult with a vet if she is not acting her normal self.

You are such a sweet girl to take your time out to do this! Praying right now that the turkey breast and rice stays down in my little toy poodle Penny Lane. She is my lil Angel and has been with me for 9 years. She is not one to get into things to often but took a day trip for mothers day (have a 2 yr old) and came back to find her seeming ok but then woke up to her vomiting then thought maybe she had acid stomach and needed food at 3am or so because often when my other poodle Mac who had parvo as a pup has acid stomach quite often an throws up stomach acid if he is too hungry. I believe because the parvo was so severe he has has some intestinal/ stomach issues. After feeding her the diareah came.. I was up with the poor lil girl all night as she threw up alot and still has diareah. Pedialite, pepto bismol and now trying a little bit of food she goobled and it has been a half an hour with no incident.. she did have slight watery blood spots with her diareah I beleive is from her irritated bowls. Vaccinations are in tact. Any advice for a mommy? On both of my pups? P.s. House is really clean so I doubt she got into anything.. Thankyou Ingrid, Penny & Mac

Sorry, it took a bit to respond. We are on different time zones (I am Italy right now, working on dog training). I deleted your second post since your e-mail was listed to protect your privacy, I hope you do not mind.

I also hope that by now Penny is feeling better. If she is still acting fine, alert, and has a good appetite that is a good sign.

If she has kept the food down it is good. We often tend to over worry when pets have diarrhea and vomit but often forget that these conditions are needed at times to help the body get rid of something that the body has felt to be not good for them. If the blood was limited to a few specks of blood, generally this is not a big concern, but if it is more than that, I would consult a vet.

Bless your heart for saving these poor critters and rehabilitating them! The only concern I can think of in regards to a bunny, is perhaps getting coccidia from rabbit poop. This takes place when a dog eats a bunny' s contaminated feces. Being that dogs are eager rabbit poop eaters, this can be uncommon, but possible. Any chances she may have drank contaminated water from somewhere? Giardia, is another possibility. If she seems not to get better have your vet check a stool sample. Best wishes!

not sure if you still get on this but..my puppy did eat a foreign object about 2 weeks ago but he ended up throwing it back up. I still took him to the vet and they gave me some special diet food to feed him for about 3-4 days and then start adding his regular food. I tried to add the regular food too quickly I think and he threw it back up. So I stuck with the diet and then slowly began to add regular food. He has had his regular food in there now, majority, for ..about 3-4 days; and he has kept it down. His stool looks fine and solid. everything is getting back to normal. Tonight I fed him but i fed him all just his regular food and about 2 hours later he threw it up. Do you think he just may still have some pain in his stomach from what he ate (an extension cord) or something else?

OMG 23 months ago

Thank you soooooo much my dog is so much better

alexadry profile image

alexadry Hub Author 23 months ago

Brittney, sometimes puppies and dogs develop ''partial obstructions'' these are obstructions where the blockage is not that severe to cause significant symptoms nor that moderate to make a dog feel well 100%. I would have your puppy seen by the vet and possibly x-rayed just to be on the safe side (if you did not do this already). You never know what could be in the tummy of a puppy who likes to ingest foreign objects. Other thoughts, has your pup been dewormed? Ask your vet if you can continue to feed the special diet for a few extra days since he seems to be having a hard time readjusting to his former food. Best wishes!

It sounded like your dog was doing much better but then had a relapse? Please read the hub thoroughly, the remedies are not meant to cure all dogs. ''The natural home remedy of a bland diet may be therefore helpful in many cases, however there are those cases that need immediate vet attention. Usually, your dog's behavior will give you hints on what to do. Chances, are if your dog is not acting right the vet may need seen the same day.''

If the bland diet is not helping there may be an underlying issue that needs taken care of, ie parasites, parvo, intestinal obstruction, gastro-enteritis and so forth. Please have your dog seen by a vet!

I am so sad when my 4 legged babies are not feeling good! this was very helpful. Hi my labradoodle girl Chili started vomitted 2 days ago, about 3-4 times in total, but not consistently. The first time she threw up i thought she ate too fast and too much. She is acting the same, stool is normal, being playful, not dyhydrated, still interested in treats. i let her skip 1 meal since the 1st time she vomitted, and it turned out ok for her. however, she doesnt wanna take her dry food this morning after woke up and trying to ask me for a cookie treat. I didnt give it to her, and after awhile, she decided to eat her dry food. but she vomitted in 5 mins after she finished it. i found some undigested beans from the stuff she threw up, which i never fed her. I wonder if she had them by accident when i took her out to play. my vet is booked and i wont be able to go until the day after tomorrow, should i fast her for tonight or tomorrow all day? she's 1 year old and around 60lbs. Thanks!

Hi there,

I've been having stomach probs with my Shepherd since he was a pup...diarhea off and on. I've changed his food to no grain holistic - Orijen - and for the first couple months his bowel movements were perfect. but now for the last 2 months he's had wet stool. He's been to the vet and his stool's been checked...nothing in there. The vet thinks he may have colitis. What kind of natural remedie can i use to help him out? everything else is ok with him, his only "symptom" of something wrong is the diarhea. He had Metronidazole for a week but it didn't really help this time. Any advice would be helpful...Thanks! ~Amy (oh, he's an almost 1.5yr old Shiloh Shepherd and is approx. 75lbs - 2 of his brothers have been put on the raw food diet to help their bowel probs and it's worked for them but I'm still resisting trying it..)

Thank you for all the responses on here, I've taken the advice listed above and am trying it now. I have a 2 and half year old Heeler/Basenji mix. About a week ago I changed her food so that her and our other puppy could try to get on the same food. Immediately after switching the food, she came down with loose stool, and over the past week, has gotten sick twice. I changed her food back to her old food, and her stomach didnt come back to normal. Now she has fasted for 24 hours and I have her on Boiled chicken and rice. This morning was her first meal on this. She still had loose stool this morning, which I figured it would not be instantaneous, but the stool had some blood in it this morning, which caused some concern. Does the blood = serious concern, or is that something that dogs go through when they have diarrhea? Thanks for any guidance.

Steve

To add on to above, she is acting completely normal other that the loose stool, she's playing tug of war with her brother, wants to chase a ball 24 hours a day, nothing is off with her personality.

Our miniature daschund Holly, back in March, got really sick, throwing up, diarrhea, pain in her abdomen! She would not hurt a flea, but she would nip at us when she would have these sharp pains in her tummy. Long story short, the vet put her on 5 meds. for GI tract. She got better, however, not about once a month, the same thing happens!!!! She doesn't get as sick, probably b/c immediately give her plain yogurt and rice. But we'll notice her behavior is different as soon as she experiences these pains! She is the most sweetest, most playful little dog, but when this happens, she will be up all night, will not lay down due to pain. She cannot get comfortable. It's just strange b/c she gets better, then it happens again. Thank you so much for your time!!

I am worried about my lab mix. All day she has been vomiting. Noticed her appatite not good last nite. Got up this morning saw vomit. All day i gave her NO food but she was drinking water but every time she drink it she vomit. So I will take your advice thanks, Fingers crossed she get better. Im thinking i bring her to the vet if she still the same tomorrow. She has no energy also. Not her self. Shes 4 yrs. This never happen before

You are better off offering ice cubes or frozen gatorade or pedialyte to lick off if you are concerned of her getting dehydrated. Gulping down water will cause more vomiting. Yes, have her seen if her behavior concerns you, a dog vomiting all day should be seen,... Best wishes!

Megan 21 months ago

Hi, thanks for all the information it has been very helpful! My dog has been throwing up for the past three morning before eating. It is a good amount of greenish/yellowish foamy liquid (bile im assuming?) He had diarhea this morning as well. He would not eat his first meal until a few hours after he vomited. He would then eat dinner fairly normally (not long after I put it down) Typically however, he eats the entire bowl as soon as it's on the ground. I took him to the vet today and he said his liver and intestines seem swollen/sore. He whined when the vet squeezed his stomach. The vet thinks he ate something he shouldn't have and that with a fast for 48 hours, ice chips and pepto bismol it should pass. Other than the vomiting he seems okay. His stool just now was softer but not diarhea. I am extremely nervous and concerned for him. The vet said whatever it was did not seem very big because he could not palpate it. Is there anything else I can do besides wait around?? Could it be something more serious than just eating a few tissues?? (which is the only thing I can think of since when I am not home he is in his crate)

i had a stray dog adopt us. I immediately took her to the vet and had her scanned for a microchip. She did have one but the information was two years out of date and the lady that did own her moved to Detroit almost two years ago which is about three and a half hours from where I live. She had an injury to her paw and a problem with her eyes which the vet prescribed meds for and have since cleared up. She was weighted and found to be 15 lbs underweight. She has been eating fairly well for the past 3 or 4 days now. Today she had thrown up 3 times today and and its always right after she eats. Any suggestions???

Does this happen right after she eats? You need to first determine if your dog is vomiting or actually regurgitating. This may help you:

You can try mashed potatoes with no milk but water added instead, plain bread or plain boiled skinless and boneless chicken. But it seems that rice works the best. Don't forget to fast first or the stomach may not be ready yet to get food. Best wishes!

Kipper's Dad 18 months ago

I realize that you can't offer medical advice. I do plan to see the vet if things don't start improving by tomorrow afternoon.

Puppy 11 weeks - Golden Retriever. Very loose stool (not watery every time) for three days. Fasted for 12-14 hours and started on plain rize and a little bit of boiled chicken breast today. First stool was better formed but still very loose - subsequent (3) "poops" left-overs were mucousy. This on the same walk.

He doesn't go more than normal. He's acting his normal goofy self and drinks water as normal. My wife says not to panic and to just wait it out as he's not acting sick. How long should I try the rize and chicken? He has had all his shots and one deworming left to do in a week and a half.

alexadry profile image

alexadry Hub Author 18 months ago

You should use the bland diet of rice and chicken until the stools are better formed and solid for a whole day. There should be more rice than chicken to work well, the rice is what really helps, whereas the chicken is just there to appeal more.

Many times, walking causes pups and dogs to poop more, so try to limit walking for a few days (just keep it brief). The presence of mucous indicates there is irritation in his gastro- intestinal system.

Of course, I cannot say what is causing this and if he should see the vet as of yet, but being goofy and having a good appetite are generally good signs.

Upon the stools looking better make sure to gradually introduce the normal diet over 2-3 days. Don't do it too fast or your pup may go back to having diarrhea.

Best wishes!

Kipper's Dad 18 months ago

Thank you very much for taking the time, alexadry. I'll see how things work out, and I'll post an update. Probably gave him a bit too much chicken for the first meal - but he'll eat anything rice-like I put in the bowl now...

It's an amazingly attentative and smart pup. Would hate to screw it up - oth, running to the vet like a nervous ninny is not very appealing either.

Again, thank you.

Kipper's Dad 18 months ago

I'm happy to report that he's doing better. It took about 48 hours for the rice to kick in. Still doing some tests at the vet to rule out any parasites and worms.

Will be changing his food to a better quality one. Now mixing rice and his new food. It's loose-ish on accasion but not the way it was.

Waiting for results from the vet.

I have an 18 month old Rotty/Bull Mastiff mix. I stopped feeding him two meals a day about a week ago. Now, just once in the am. He's been vomiting 7 hrs. after he eats and eats grass to induce vomiting. His stool is firm. I usually just feed him dry dog food and water. He does gulp it down. Adding other foods like chicken, fried eggs, mac & cheese does not agree with him. When there is a lot of commotion (people walking by or other dogs on the property), I notice he gets diarrhea (I guess from nerves). He gets very excited.

hello there. What a fantastic article. Full of useful information. Our shih tzu became extremely lethargic yesterday - unable to walk more than a few paces and not eating or drinking, he wasn't vomitting and his poo was normal, but his stomach was extremely noisy. The vet gave him a couple of shots and sent us home with zitac, but it is now nearly 24 hours later and he doesn't seem any better. do you think I am expecting too much too soon. I am off to boil some rice as per your advice to see if I can tempt him.

kind regards and thanks for all the time you spend giving people worthwhile advice.

Hi there Alexadry. Magnificient blog u have here. Sorry to take your time.

i'f been having some problems with my 7 month Toy Poodle named Rumble. The problem started when i gave him a deworm tablet (that was intended for a 10 kg dog). Rumble is only 2.8kgs. He refused to eat em as usual. i mixed half of em into his food. But he instead refused to eat much of his food(boiled chicken, wet food and a little dry kibble). frustrated me, decided to put another quarter of the deworm down his throat forcefully. After successfully doing that, i went on to clean his bowl, i cleaned it carefully and to my suprise found out that the other half of the deworm has also been eaten by rumble.

Rumble started having terrible diarrhea 13 hours after and for a short period he also drooled (sliver coming out profusely from the mouth) Also to note that regardless of this, Rumble has been his true self, without showing any signs of fatigue or lethargie. He took a poop almost once every 2- 3 hours for the next 18 hrs. Every time he did it, the stool was dark brown waterish, some sessions had a little spots of blood in em. He even pooped some mustard-ish colored poop once. All of his poop (all ten times in 18 hrs) were in small quantity.

After goin to the vet, he priscribed antibiotics, and some enzime + vitamins for Rumble. Now, Rumble's diarrhea has stopped, but i'm in for the opposite problem. Rumble hasn't pooped for 66 hours now. I'm worried and haven't gone to college today. Rumble's attitude and energy has been perfectly fine. eating habits perfectly fine. Drinking good amount of water. Since the going to the vet, he has been eating boiled chicken, some small cubes of carrot and a very little mashed potatoes. He also runs around the house alot as usual. He runs easily 300-500 meters a day and plays hide and seek with my family, and many other games. Nothing is abnormal, except the part when he doesn't poop. His stomach is a tiny bit big (a result of 5 meals in 3 days without pooping).

Should i be worried? Or should i do something with the diet? Or should i just wait?

Dear Chris,

That is very nice of you to skip school to keep an eye on your canine friend! It sounds like he has had so much vomiting and diarrhea going on that there was simply nothing left in his tummy to form a stool. By now though he should have went. I have a hub with remedies for dog constipation if you want to try any..canned plain pumpkin without spices may help.. a good long walk also stimulates the bowels.. it is good he is still doing well, but he may need perhaps a stool softener prescribed by your vet if he starts acting lethargic..best wishes and fingers crossed he will go soon!

Gaby, I am wondering if you may be dealing with a case of coughing rather than vomiting, are there stomach contractions? does it happen right after drinking? does it sound like there is something stuck in his throat and then he brings up the fluid? I do not think a cat would cause that, generally cats do not transmit much to dogs other than parasites..

Julie 13 months ago

Hi, I just had an awful day after my Lab/Border Collie mix woke me at 4:30 am after having diahrea with mucous, on the floor in several places in my bedroom. I had to spend the day cleaning the carpet, naturally she couldn't have done it on the hard floor. Then, she had almost watery bloody diarhea. I was so afraid, I am out of work, and have no money for a vet right now. But the vet said she could have had a parasite from eating dirt, which she does all the time, even though I try to watch her and not let her, or it could be from diet change, which she has had, since I have been buying whatever dog food is on sale or I have a coupon for. I did get some inexpensive Imodium, gave it to her, along with a Pepto Bismal tablet. She seems much better, and has not done anything but pee since early today. Is it okay to just give her cooked hamburger or chicken, veggies and potatoes, and maybe rice and oatmeal? I think it would be better than dog food. Please advise. Thanks.

alexadry profile image

alexadry Hub Author 13 months ago

The recipe I give in the article above is what most vets recommend for upset tummies. The rice is the most important factor to treat diarrhea and the meat is added just to convince the dog to eat. Since you already gave imodium, and the pepto and she has had not any diarrhea there are some chances though that the rice and chicken may cause the opposite problem-constipation- at this point.

You should stick with a good diet instead of switching brands over and over. You can also feed a home made diet and there are a variety of books and websites offering a plethora of advice on how to feed this. I will not go into details as I would have to write a book on this topic there is so much to say.. You can also purchase a de-wormer over the counter that works against a variety of parasites, one of the best and safest is safeguard, read the label carefully before using and determine the correct dosage..best wishes!

I am puppy sitting for my sister right now and he puppy has a really upset stomach, i can hear it popping and hissing. He also has diarrhea that has some blood in it. He hasn't eaten all night so he has already done the fast, but he also has no interest in his food. He was just to the vet before I got him and he has some kind of worm and he is on a med that is either called Albon Suspension or PET Boston Round, those are the two names on the medication bottle that i can see. Do you have any advice. He is a toy maltipoo and only weighs about 4.5 lbs. I gave him a sliver of a pepto tablet to see if that would calm his stomach down.

alexadry profile image

alexadry Hub Author 12 months ago

If your puppy was prescribed Albon, very likely he is suffering from coccidia which also causes bloody stools. If you cannot entice him to eat you can try feeding some meat based baby food but with no chicken or onion amongst the ingredients. Rub some pancake syrup on his gums to give him a burst of energy and keep his blood glucose levels high since toy breeds are prone to hypoglycemia. Have him seen again if he does not eat or get better, best wishes!

My 1 year old samoyed went to the vet 1 month ago for HGE because he was vomitting blood and runny stool with mostly blood in it. He was treated overnight at the vet and went home with famotidine and metronidazole and precribed a bland diet. This happened 1 month ago and was fine.

I am affraid his past symptoms are returning because yesterday his stool was very runny and today it looked solid and normal with some grass in it. He wants to eat grass a lot because of the upset tummy and did eat grass and shortly after he threw up the grass.

He has not eaten anything yet and his stomach is making really loud gurgling noises. I know you said dogs should fast for 1 or 2 days but can I give him maybe some plain yogurt to help his tummy? he doesnt have diarrhea for now and only is vomits when he eats grass. He doesnt have intrest in food right now.

Hi my toy poodle was vomitting for about a day. Yesterday followed the bland diet without ypgurt n no.vomitting. pedialyte has helped. He is playful n barking, but has not pooped. He now has hiccups too. Xray was good except vet said i its a fabric it would not show up. Is it normal for no bowel movements? He never had diarrhea. Poop was always firmed n last one was yesterday am. Very little. Thanks.

alexadry profile image

alexadry Hub Author 11 months ago

If your poodle has vomited a lot, it could be he simply has not enough food in its bowels to produce a bowel movement. However, lack of bowel movements and vomiting are also a sign of intestinal obstruction, keep an eye on him and if he seems to be worsening or not getting better, have him seen immediately.

I have a 5yr old Yorkie. She is very attached to me. Sometimes I have to be in the same room with her or she wont eat her food. So sometimes she does get upset tummy b/c she did not eat and throws up that yellow frothy stuff. Lately, she has been acting weird. Not all the time but every other day or so, she acts like she is uncomfortable and cant find a position or spot to lay and constantly moves around from chair to floor and she shakes and sometimes yelps or crys. I do not believe she hurt herself. When this is going on she will not eat (even with offered lunch meat or her fav canned dog food Before Grain). Then when the situation is over and she is ok she will come to me and not be shaking and happy and normal again. Sometimes I wonder if its because she ate food and has digestion problems or gas. Sometimes during her episodes when I pick her up she and hold her just right she lets out a very large burp. This seems to help relieve her. I have call in to vet to get an appt. She is still going to the bathroom fine. Anyone else experience this with their dogs?

But living in a place that has no emergency clinic or a vet not open on Sundays really makes it hard when that's when your puppy feels ill. Thank you so very very much!

Ashley, you are very welcome, please remember that a bland diet may be helpful in many cases, however there are cases that need immediate vet attention. If your puppy is not acting right (lethargic, not eating, acting sick and depressed) the vet may need seen the same day.

Is bread or crackers ok to give a dog in place of rice?

alexadry profile image

alexadry Hub Author 6 months ago

While bread and crackers will likely not hurt (as long as they do not contain dangerous ingredients such as onion, garlic, raisins) they do little for a tummy ache. Rice helps because it absorbs excess water in the intestinal tract likely allowing the stools to become firm.

hiya ive got 3 miniature yorkshire terriers my youngest who is 19 weeks old started with a upset tummy bout a week or so ago then my middle dog who is 12 month old started with it now my 15 month old dog has got it i tried fasting them n the chicken n rice but it really upset there tummy aswell ive just heard that cornflour mixed with water can help have u got anything else that may help please x

alexadry profile image

alexadry Hub Author 6 months ago

Pippa, since this is spreading from one puppy to another, I would be concerned about conditions such as coccidia, giardia or other intestinal parasites, please have a vet examine a stool sample for a proper diagnosis. If the home remedies are not working, there is likely some underlying cause that needs addressed. Best wishes.

Victoria, anytime any thing different is added to a dog's diet it may trigger an upset tummy. But my dogs seem to get one every now and then regardless. The fact he has lost his appetite is nature's way to take care of the upset tummy, his tummy may likely need some rest. A 12/24 hour fast will not hurt. If he is a young puppy or a toy/teacup breed, it may help to rub his gums with some pancake syrup if he stays without eating for a while. You can keep an eye on him, and report to your vet if it doesn't get better. If you notice any diarrhea, you can try a bland diet for a few days.

Best wishes!

I have a four pound teacup yorkie with a englarged stomach from either getting into the trash or i found a whole bunch of reesus cup wrappers all over the floor. He is still very energetic and if i flash a toy his way he will respond immediately. His stomach is hard and he had a bowel movement about an hour ago. I am not sure if that is a good or bad thing. He is acting his normal self but also isn't in a way but it possibly be my paranoia after losing my dog a few years ago do to the expansion of dried apricots in his stomach which caused heart failure. His stomach was somewhat similar and that makes me nervous. I am only sixteen however and do not have a way to get him to a vet to seek any help and have contemplated walking there myself with him however it is not a short hike and i don't know of any local vets open right now near me. Do you have any other suggestions as to things i can to at home that might sooth his stomach. I am very greatful. Thank you so much. and your information is beyond helpful. You are doing a great thing for dog's and us dog lovers. Thank you. -Sarah

Sarah, if your gut feeling is he is not doing well, very likely you are right. The symptoms you are seeing are worrisome especially since you are talking about a tiny dog as a teacup and there are several chocolate wrappers on the floor! Can you find somebody to take you there? look in your yellow pages or do a Google search for ''mobile vets'' in your area. Some come to your home. Please do not wait until he gets worse, he is small and things can get downhill fast, hoping the best, best wishes.

I have a 4.8 LB long hair chihuahua. Since yesterday morning he has been vomiting/gagging and bringing up a thick white mucous. I took him to the vet and they are waiting for results on the "vomiting complete blood profile" The vet said to give him a 1/4 tablet of pepcid 10 mg and well had to settle for the drug stores own brand but is very very comparable. I gave 1 dosage last night hidden in a small piece of chicken so he would eat it. He started bring up more and more of the mucous and we are very worried and concerned being xmas and have no idea how long to get test results.

Other than that he is still active and drinks his water. it was a sleepless night as he kept bringing up the mucous.

Any ideas? He is still showing to be active and loves his walks still so that is a good sign and seems his stool is still looking normal.

Rosyln, chicken skin is fat and can lead to pancreatitis, not much left to do now than monitor. Turkey is ok, only if in limited amounts and using white meat from the breast, but since he already ate the chicken skin I would not feed turkey until you are sure his tummy is fine, best wishes! you can read about turkey here:

I would think by now he would be sick from the chicken skin, any way keep monitoring him, some over the counter flea shampoos (like Hartz) have a history of making dogs sick. If you used a product known for causing reactions, it may be worth it to further rinse him with diluted Dawn dish detergent and water. best wishes

thank you so much i am unemployed and we just had spent 140 at the vet as my dog was attacked by another dog.. he is fine.. the chicken was roasted in olive oil so maybe that made it okay i hope.. he seems to be okay.. the shampoo was about three weeks ago and i did rerinse him it was lavaggio.. and the manufacterer said it was okay but still i think i should have rinsed better..

i used dawn before and i will go back to that.. and dilute it.. i am going to buy rice and skinless boneless chicken to day i think would that be okay to give him.. he didnt eat much yesterday i appreciate this so much.

Our Golden Retriever was attacked by a pit bull on monday. We didnt' notice any wounds, and his behavior was fine. On friday my groomer noticed some blood in the crate and advised us to watch him as she could not find any wound. We then did a once over and realized that his whole left side, shoulder to under his ribs (down armpit area) was a huge bump. Still could not find a bite mark, so we decided it was a bad bruise.

Sat evening, Jake was licking like mad, and we then saw the puss, more red in color, no white or yellow. We then squeezed it out as much as possible and washed it out. Used Peroxide and neosporin. Then put him in an old shirt to cover the wound. There are no vets or feed stores open this weekend to get fish-flex or fish-mox. :( Jake had a rough night, trying to lick and lick, then he threw up twice. He also makes this chomping noise and sometimes shivers his lower jaw. Today is sunday, and we cleaned the wound we can clearly see one puncture and scrap. Looks like the other dogs tooth pulled his skin away from his muscle and it filled with fluid. It is only weeping now, and we are keeping it clean. Our issue is he is constantly trying to eat leaves when we take him out to go potty, and he has not pooped since late yesterday which is rare.

I am worried about him. He reluctantly ate his breakfast. We took a sheet and twisted it up to wrap around his neck acting like a barrier to keep him from licking. In place of a cone thing.

What do I do about his nausea/tummy issue with the leave eating? and we are so broke, going to the vet is something we are trying not to do, even though his vet is awesome. I would like to just try fish flex first.

So any thoughts?

Thank you so much for any thoughts

p.s. Yes I called animal control on that dog and they have an upcoming court date. Seems this is not a new issue for these people.

alexadry profile image

alexadry Hub Author 4 months ago

As you may already know, eating leaves is a sign of nausea. Dogs tend to eat grass when they are nauseous and if no grass is available they may try to eat leaves or carpet. The fact he did not poop last night can be normal if he vomited (no food in the stomach, no bowel movements). Are you able to take his rectal temperature? Any chances you can pick-up an Elizabethan collar at Petsmart so to make him no longer lick or chew the area? I am concerned about him having an infection that is spreading and causing him to need antibiotics orally at this point. A vet visit is a must, in my opinion, my very best wishes.

Since he is keeping down scrambled eggs it could be he may need a bland diet. Have you already tried a vet prescription diet such as Hill's I/D or some other sensitive stomach diet? You claim this happens after he eats, could it be he is eating too fast? Sounds like he is regurgitating rather than vomiting, here are two helpful articles:

Hello,

My dog taz (bijon and pekingese mix) sat next to our new heater all night (the type that looks like a fireplace) and today acted lethargic and then threw-up 2 piles of his dry dogfood. Can sitting to close to a heat source make a dog sick?

alexadry profile image

alexadry Hub Author 4 months ago

Anthony, that is a very interesting question! Since your dog is part pekingese which is a brachycephalic breed, over heating may cause problems. If Taz's nose is short and smashed in, this is what brachycephalic means. I would normally think it would not cause problems but due to the breed, I cannot see why a dog cannot over heat by laying too close to a heater and get sick from it, here is a link about brachycephalic dogs:

http://www.marvistavet.com/html/body_brachycephali

The only way to truly know is by taking the dog's rectal temperature, anything above norm is sign of hyperthermia, best wishes!

Anntony 4 months ago

Thanks for your response! Taz is back to normal now. It's so nice to have someone out there that has your experience and answers everyone's questions so thoroughly.

Taz is not quite brachycephalic, but he is a little odd looking. He has the big bug eyes, body shape, and underbite like a peke -- But has the white wavy hair, face with long snout, and personality (or DOGality)of a Bijon.

The link was very interesting and I saved it for future reference. He relates to a few other things in that article.

Thanks for what you do!

alexadry profile image

alexadry Hub Author 4 months ago

Yes, please have him checked by a vet. At times, ornage stools may be due to some sort of bile duct problem or the destruction of red blood cells in the body. Did you remove the tick right away or do you think it was on for more than 24 hours?

Kirst 3 months ago

I've been searching and searching for something to give me a good answer about my dogs upset tummy (10 month old golden retriever). She is acting normal, happy and everything but has been off her food for a week or so and has been vomiting here and there. By off her food I mean eating, but not a lot and very fussy. She has been keeping it down, but sometimes she vomits sometimes she doesn't. It isn't constant...vomit one day once....4 days later it happens again.

I gave her plain chicken with some pumpkin, carrot and sweet potato the other night and she seemed to like that and there was no vomiting.

She vomited 4 times this morning, white foamy clear stuff, but hadn't had anything to eat except out of her treat toy. She did have dog food and biscuit last night. I gave her some food this morning as she was giving me the hungry look and she threw up once but only a little and hasn't again.

I haven't fasted her or anything yet, so will try the fasting, ice chips and bland food and see how she goes.

Her hydration levels seem ok (skin snapped back) and she is happy and playing and alert, so thinking it is just her poor little tummy that is making her feel yucky.

If she doesn't improve with her eating after this, off to the vet she goes.

Thanks for the tips!

add some water to the kibble or add some broth with no garlic or onion in it. Most dogs will lap this up readily. usually when a dog does not drink enough the urine color should be very concentrated dark yellow...

alexadry--I thought I had read this hub. I did 3 months ago! Thanks for answering my question on the feed. Gizmo gets an upset stomach now and then. He is fine now, as he often is by the end of the day. I just wait it out and he gets over it. Maybe it's gas? I don't know. His appetite is back and he's playing. So, I guess I shouldn't worry when he gets these upset stomachs unless it goes on for more than a day? Then I should take him to the vet, I would think. Your input? Thanks again for directing me to this hub!

alexadry profile image

alexadry Hub Author 2 months ago

I would still mention it to your vet if they come and go. I would also carefully watch what he is eating (does he go outside and perhaps eat grass, dirt, sticks?, do you give table scraps?)I would bring a stool sample as these need checked at least once a year so to rule out parasites and protozoans. Maybe he needs a change of diet, there could be something that in the food that is causing this. Ask your vet, best wishes!

My 15 week 5 lbs puppy started puking tonight. Sometimes his belly gurgles but not often, and he has retched before but not often but today I gave him some ddewormer from the vet and 2-3 hours later he just started puking nonstop. 5 times! He threw up everything he ate and I'm sure his meds as well but not sure it was powder and I'm not sure if it was the meds causing it or if I should be worried. He was acting sluggish before he got sick and now that he threw up he's acting more normal and playing like normal and i wasn't sure if I should finish the worm med or not

My english bulldog lately has been having diarrhea and I saw worms in the stool. I am guessing that these home remedies will not help in my case for my dog's upset stomach, right? alexadry profile image

alexadry Hub Author 4 weeks ago

A bland diet will not hurt, but yes, you really need the worms taken care of so to go to the root of the problem, if the diarrhea is caused by them. If they are long, it sounds like roundworms, my article below has pictures of them. It is best though to have a vet run a fecal just to make sure they are the only worms your dog has, and also you may need another fecal test to repeat in 3 weeks to make sure your dog got rid of them entirely. At times, they need a second treatment, best wishes! Here is the link: http://alexadry.hubpages.com/hub/Canine-Roundworms

Cookie is a puppy and he has had an upset stomach from the day I adopted him. He is 8 weeks old and has been vomiting and having diarrhea since he came to my new home. According to the breeder he was fine before we got him home, indeed he looked fine when we got him. Could moving to a new home make his tummy upset? Is this something that I can treat at home or would you suggest seeing a vet? I am tempted to try the bland diet but then your descriptions of Parvo frighten me. I did not see blood in his stools, but he has been vomiting almost non-stop today and did not want to eat. He also at times moans a bit as if in pain. I contacted Cookie's breeder but he is no longer responding to my calls. Is this more than an upset stomach?

alexadry profile image

alexadry Hub Author 2 weeks ago

While the stress of moving to a new home may upset a tummy, it sounds like there is more to it. Please see the vet, it could be parvo, gastro-enteritis and your puppy may dehydrate quickly. I think this is more than a dog upset stomach.

My dog has been suffering from an upset stomach after a recent diet change. I wished I had encountered this article before! He is doing OK so far after putting him on a bland diet. I wished the people at the pet store would have told me about switching gradually the food. I told them I was looking for an easier to digest diet and got a premium dog food brand, but nobody said anything. I had to discover this the hard way. Only now I see, the bag was saying something about switching gradually! I think pet store owners should emphasize this though. Not all busy dog owners can read all the labels on the bag! I wished it said it by the feeding instructions as I would not have missed it, instead it was to the side, oh well. Well, I know what to do next time to prevent an upset stomach again, thank you so much for sharing your vet approved bland diet for upset stomach in dogs!

You are right. Even if you try to treat your dog's upset stomach at home, if there is an underlying cause for it, such as worms, it will come back. And many worms you do not actually see. This may appear like a long post, but just wanted to share my story. My puppy hospitalized last week; he had vomiting, diarrhea. I though it was just an upset stomach, but he refused to eat, was mopey and started to moan in pain. So we rushed him to the vet. The vet was closed and of course was a saturday, Emergency vet; they thought it was parvo. They ran a test and no thankfully it was not. They decided to keep him overnight and asked my $100 dollars upfront. Two nights later, they had charged my credit card $1,000 FOR iv fluids, meds and a bunch of other tests they ran. They found nothing... so frustrating and costly! At the end upon being discharged and feeling better they told me he had gastro-enteritis. They told me they knew nothing how he got it and what to do to prevent it in the future. I went online and found that gastro-enteritis just means inflammation of the stomach and intestines! All that money for just an upset stomach? I am terrified now if he gets the same thing again and I have no control on what caused it or prevent it.. so frustrating! is anybody in the same situation?

SARAH, my dog was hospitalized as well for what looked like an upset stomach and they never figured out as well what was causing it. I did not spend the amount of money you did but it was an equally frustrating ordeal. They run many tests but I had to put a stop to it otherwise they would dry up all my bank account. So we left it at that, a solitary episode which fortunately stopped that day and it has been one year since he felt so sick.

At times, a real causes cannot be found. In these cases, it helps to monitor the dog closely and possibly put the dog on sensitive stomach diet per the vet's advice. My male Rott got diarrhea so severe as a pup he was also hospitalized and it really got costly. I got dog insurance that same day. Thankfully, even in my episode it was a solitary event as well but the underlying cause for thid dog upset stomach remained a mystery...

My rottweiler has been sick several weeks, it comes and goes. We do the bland diet, he gets better and then it returns. I do not see any worms in his stools and he is always on the same diet. Any ideas what may be causing him to get sick every now and then? I wish I could see a pattern, but so far I am noticing anything in particular that could trigger these bouts of diarrhea and vomiting. I do feed the same food and treats we have been feeding him for years.
