Causes of Blood in Dog Urine
91
It is not uncommon for dog owners to get alarmed upon seeing traces of blood in their dog's urine. They often rush their dogs to the vet fearing the worse. More often than not, however, the cause may be minor. Making use of the better safe than sorry approach, is always a savvy way to go, even because the quicker treatment is started the quicker the recovery time.
Blood in the urine often may appear of a pinkish tint because it mixes within the urine altering its color. When the blood appears bright red (frank blood) it is usually not mixed in the urine but rather coming from the vaginal or rectal area. It is important therefore for owners to be able to detect if the blood is diluted in the urine, mixed within, or simply coming from the dog's behind, regardless of urinating.
Causes of Dog Blood in Urine
Following are the most common (and not so common) causes of blood in the urine in dogs. Please see your vet for a proper diagnosis and treatment.
Causes of Blood in Dog Urine
- Urinary Tract Infections
Affected dogs exhibit blood in the urine often accompanied by other key symptoms such as frequent urination, painful urination, straining, licking genitals and fever. The condition can be easily treated with a course of antibiotics.
- Bladder stones
Bladder stones also known as uroliths, are not uncommon in dogs. The two most common types of bladder stones found in dogs are: struvite stones and calcium oxalate stones. Dogs will bladder stones will develop painful urination, straining and bloody urine. Treatment mainly consists of dietary changes and in the case of large stones, surgical removal.
- Prostate Infections
Prostrate infections occur only in intact male dogs. Symptoms suggesting prostate infection in dogs consist of: bloody urine, enlarged prostrate, difficult and painful urination, straining, lack of appetite and fever.
- Estrus Cycle
While it may be obvious that an intact female dog will bleed during their heat cycle, there are novice dog owners that may not be aware of this occurrence. A dog will go in heat around six months of age and will produce some vaginal bleeding and vaginal swelling during their first week. Then the bleeding will halt after approximately 7-10 days and will be replaced by a straw colored fluid. This is generally when the dog is ready to mate.
- Uterine Infections (Pyometra)
Uterine Infections occur only in intact female dogs. Often owners confuse pyometra with the dog's heat cycle, but are often surprised that a second heat has occurred only a few weeks after the last heat. This however, is typical of pyometra, presenting often between 4 to 8 weeks after the last heat. This condition can become quickly life-threatening.
When the pyometra is open female dogs will develop a foul, mucous, bloody vaginal discharge often resembling tomato soup. In this case, dogs are often given antibiotics to clear up the infections, fluids to hydrate them and often they uterus is removed.
- Tick Born diseases
These annoying and disgusting creatures are known to cause various tick borne diseases that may cause bloody urine among other symptoms.
- Poisons
The most common poison that causes bloody discharges is rodent poison. Dogs that ingest rat poisons containing Warfarin will develop blood clotting disorders and bloody urine may be a symptom.
There can be other various causes of bloody urine in dogs. Among these are trauma to the bladder and some forms of cancer involving the urinary or reproductive system.
Dogs exhibiting blood in the urine should always be seen by a veterinarian. In order to help a veterinarian come to a diagnosis quickly, a urine sample may be helpful. A small teaspoon size will generally suffix and the urine should be collected in a sterile container, possibly dated with the pet's name and the time it was collected.Urine samples should be very fresh, not older than 4 hours long. It is best to refrigerate the sample.

My dog is peeing blood does not see to be in pain but not sure if I should worry?
well, my dog has traces of blood in his stool, can someone help explain if this is normal or is something not right with my dog ? thanks.
MY DOG IS 8YEARDS OLD HE HAS BLOOD IN URINE TOOK HIM TO THE VET GAVE ME MED FOR HIM BUT STILL HAS BLOOD IN URINE MY DOG IS NOT FIXS
I have a Female dog who is in heat, but found that my Male dog is now peeing blood, my male dog is a big dog that can not mate with the small female...why is he peeing blood? Please help!!
My dog is peeing blood, it's not mixed in and seems to be separate from the urine. Try to imagine oil and water, the blood is relatively red and in the middle of the urine. She is around 8 years old reaching 9 and is overweight. But she doesn't seem to be in pain. She urinates more frequent now and in small lots. I am not sure if she is in heat becuase it has been a few weeks now and doesn't heat usually go for a few days? Advice please! Thanks.
My dog was peeing blood and wen tto the vet twice...
His problem is because he is not fixed and that would be a prostate infection.
There are other reasons of blood in urine-STONES, OR SEVERE URINARY TRACT INFECTION.
tAKE THEM TO THE VET IF IT CONTINUE AND THEY WILL BE GIVEN AN ANTIBIOTIC.
Carrot or anyone else that can help please email me. My dog finished being in heat about a week ago . Now tho there's traces of blood in her urine. It's seperate too just like carrots post. Little drops of blood in the 1st few drops of pee. What is it? It's like oil in water... Please email! She draggs me thru vets office and am scared to go back!
I would suggest that if you dog has bloody stools or blood in urine to get them checked out immediately. Our dog started out throwing up then the diarreah started and for a month she was in and out of the vet. Blood work was done and also X-Rays. We took her to a internist and found out she has cancer. Couldn't believe it because she was still very playful and everything but she just couldn't stop throwing up. So I would suggest to keep up on this and also look up your dog food on consumeraffairs.com.
My 5 month old female puppy has light blood comeing out every few hours with her pee..What could be the main cause of this..a UTI or would you say she may be going into heat. She does lick down there, is acting tired, and usually is very energetic.
My 8 year old femal shitzu is spayed & tonight after being at groomers she pee'd on a doggy pad after the urine, 4-6 drops of blood came out. This has happened twice, the blood drops at the end of urinating. She has been urinating more often but does not seem to be in pain. I am scared beyond words, unemployed & my dogs are my world please help me.
My pug has just started to pee blood. The first thing thats strange is she is having accidents indoors and that highly unlikely of her. It was just urine, with a drop of blood straight in the middle of it to begin with. Then the next time it came out all pink and mixed together. She hasn't been liking her dog food lately and has been throwing up here and there. Also when she has an accident, it makes the whole room smell like rotten seafood. Very stressed about this, and I cannot bear anymore in my already stressful life. If anyone has a good idea, please let me know...aside from taking her to a vet.
my dog bella 2 yrs old, had puppies two weeks after delivering, was very poorly and being sick, we took to the vets, she was kept in and they done all sorts of tests, xrays blood tests. couldnt fine what was wrong. she is now home, better but not 100%, she has started having bright red jelly like blood in her pee, took her back to the vets and theyve given me more antibiotics, she s been on them for 4 days now and seems the same, pups are now 8 weeks old. im puzzled!
I would guess that if they did all of the other tests, they also did a urinalysis. If nothing showed up, there could still be cause for concern and a urinary culture may be in order. Cultures are grown for several days and are done by specialized labs. I would be more concerned that the issue is vaginal and not urinary. Spaying her and not going through any more trauma is probably the best thing after she's feeling better.
My female labrador is in heat. At first there was no blood but the male dog smells vagina and goes on top of her. I let the male dog do it freely but he has been unsuccessful for a week or two. Now, I separated the female and noticed a little brown blood stain in her vagina which I wiped out. Then she started to pee and there was blood, not mixed, with the urine. What could this be? Is this UTI? I am giving her anti-biotics and observing her at the moment. Please help, I really don't know what's happening.
My dog was peeing blood, is aggressive(he usually is not), and has swollen paws. The vet can't diagnose him either(Banfield located in PetSmart). What could this mean? He is about 9 months old. Today is when it happened. He was at his trainer's house. Which is in a rural are.
All of these people who are supposedly concerned yet refuse to take their dog to the vet really bother me. Quit asking people online for advice when you already know your responsibility is to take the poor thing to be looked at by a professional. If you won't take care of them as they should be, don't get a pet.
I agree with Kelly. Blood is NEVER normal in a dog's urine or stool, excepting the cases when it looks as if a female in heat has blood in her urine, frequently it is just mixing with the blood from her heat. Sometimes it is due to a simple urinary tract infection. Nevertheless, you should NEVER just go online & hope some faceless stranger will help you out, saving you on a vet bill. Your dog needs to see a professional; even if it is a minor infection, things could get a whole lot worse without treatment (for a UTI, they usually just a short regimen of antibiotics, & some mild pain killers as UTIs can be irritating & painful). If your male dog has blood in his urine, it is a VERY alarming sign & he needs to see the vet right away. UTIs are very rare in males, & therefore blood in the urine could indicate a much more serious problem (think, bladder or prostate cancer). Please don't delay in taking your dog to the vet. At the first sign of blood in his or her urine or stool, you need to be on the phone WITH A VET, making an appointment. If you can't be bothered to take your animal to the doctor when they are sick, then you have no business owning a pet in the first place.
Our 2 yr. old german short-hair was in heat 6 weeks ago and was mated accidently by a black lab for a very short time. We think she may me pregnant because her nipples are still enlarged and now she just started peeing spots / small clumps of blood. Could this be a miss carriage or UTI?
some people can not take there pets to the vet due to not having the money, my 3 yr old fixed female started having some bloody urine today but there is no means for me to take her to the vet becuase of the lack of money in my family so to the person who said you shouldn't have pets your crazy my pet is my baby and of course i want to do what is best for her i just can't
You should not own a pet if you cannot afford to take proper care of them. Do you have kids? If they were peeing blood would you refuse to take them to the doctor. If you don't have money...find a nice home for your pet with people who do have money. Stop being so selfish!
I agree. Save your pet from suffering and give it up for adoption.
Just a different point of view for you, my dogs have the best of everything, are well loved and cared for, and are happy and healthy. My kids are the same, but they have a little thing called health insurance. Imaging if your kid needed treatment, and you had to pay full price for every part of the care he/she received. How much money do you have for that? Dogs have been man's best friend and looked to humans for companionship since long before vets and supplements existed, so to tell someone who is not wealthy that they should not be allowed to care for their beloved dog shows that you are an ignorant spoiled turd. You should not have dogs or kids. Thanks.
My dog is peeing blood-sometimes mixed with urine, sometimes straight bright blood. She is 14 years old-I have just lost my job and cannot take her to the vet. She doesn't seem to be in pain is there anything I can do for her.
Like Susan, my dog is also 14 years old & is peeing with blood. sometimes with urine at the end & sometimes it's very red. i already took him to the vet & found a stone in him. with his age, i've decided not to have him go thru surgery. when he was younger, maybe 6 yrs old when i discover a few drop of blood at the end of pee, i took him to TWO different vet who gave him antibiotic & it DIDN'T work. So for those who critize us owners for not taking our dog in for treatment should keep their opinion to themselves.
my dachshund has traces of blood in his urine, is not i any pain or anything
my puppys peeing blood hes a staffy it started off clumps off blood now its mixed with pee. i took him to the vet last week and they gave him antibiotics and a pee cup to take back. i took his urine sample in the next day and it came up with nothing but alot of blood in it.have had him on antibiotics for 7 days now and still blood in urine shud i go back to or wait till all the antibiotics are finished
My 4 yr shih tzu has blood in urine for 1 day but I only see it after he has urinated many times because he goes a little at a time. It looks like he is straining. Eat normal ,sleeps well and drinks lots of water. What r the chances of bladder stones???
blood in urine could certainly be a urinary tract infection, and it could also be a secondary infection that leads to a much larger problem: KIDNEY FAILURE
Some people like to down play the significance of changes in your dogs appearance or behavior, and say pet owners rush off to the vet only to find there's nothing wrong. And those people would be right probably 85% of the time.
If there is blood in your dogs urine, go ahead and push to run blood work to make sure the kidneys are okay. You don't have to run a full panel -you can isolate. Or, conversely, insist on having your urinalysis also include a test for SPECIFIC GRAVITY. You're already going to have the urine examined -check the gravity. If it's below 1.020, you have something wrong with the kidneys.
My vet didn't investigate beyond the urinary tract infection . Even after my dog had reoccurring problems over 2 years, combined over 3 tests, I was still told don't worry. I believed him, I wanted to believe.
All I can think about is -had my vet actually done his job and ran a simple blood test, tested SG, or run an Xray-- I could have been aware of my dog's kidney failure at least a year and a half ahead of time --possibly keeping my dog at stage 2!
People say " oh, don't worry, it's nothing". And we also know the majority of animals reach 75% complete failure before a trained professional properly diagnoses the problem.
And all I can tell you is, if all vets operate like my vet, or with the attitude of the OP I would suspect the reason the majority of dogs and cats aren't diagnosed until stage 4 KIDNEY FAILURE is because the vets aren't looking!
They're too busy saying people are rushing in over spilled milk. And they'd be right most of the time. But veterinary science isn't conjecture -- it's empirical.
But that doesn't change the fact, when I first came in the vet should have run a partial blood panel, weighed for the urine's SG. Had I the knowledge I do now about Kidney Failure --as any vet should-- I would have known to look. I would have never sugar coated.
I could have kept my dog at stage 2 for sometime, but because she was nearing an advance stage 4 by the time the diagnostic was performed, she died in less than 3 months.
Starved to death.
My 11 years old dog was having trouble when urinating, we took him to the Vet like a month ago and he told us he had stones and did surgery but like a week ago he is now bleeding after peeing, the Vet prescibed him with antibiotics since friday but he keeps bleeding.
My DOG GOT into a fight, && now is sick. bleeding when pee's. he has injured testicals. and i am no where near a vet. he is not eating. just drinking water. very weak. :( anyone know anything plz help.
My female dog recently started showing blood in her urine. It is only at the end of the stream and usually only a couple of drops. She is eating and drinking no problem. She has recently had a bad case of fleas and we have taken steps to solve this problem with a pill. Could this be the cause? Pet bills can be expensive especially if there is no need :)
Thanks!
Hi i have a six month old wippet cross pointer who was really poorly 2weeks ago as he was peeing blood i took him 2 the vets they told me it was an infection and gave him antibiotics which he finished on tuesday all seemed fine but then last nite i notice there was a small amount of blood in his urine again he is on a diet of meat and biscults could that be a problem also he was born with only 1 ball could that be a problem 4 him 2 :)
My yorkie who is 7 years old has had stones for about 2 years now. She has had 2 surgeries to remove them, but she still has them. They come and go. Some days she is miserable and some days she is fine. She will pee blood and have a hard time peeing. She is my baby. We have run blood work on her twice, because they started causing seizures from the pain. She is on special food and on vitamins. The vitamins have helped a little. She is on pain meds when a stone gets stuck. I will not put her through anymore surgeries, because she is even more miserable after the surgeries. I will do whatever I can for my baby. After all she is like my child. Antibiotics don't help, just the pain meds do and eventually she passes the stone. Of course this has caused her to not be house broke anymore, but there is one constillation she does go on a pee pad or on the linoluem floor.
i wan playing soccer in the back yard with my nephew and the dog was chasint the ball we were kicking back and forth and the dog got kicked in the side peed blood what should i do
Hi, Donna I am so sorry to hear your baby is hurting. My little dog Alph had stones too so I know how it feels. What worked for him was EDTA I gave him 1/4 of a 625 mg capsule, he weighed 10 lbs. and one drop of grapefruit seed oil. I put them both inside of a ground meat ball. Within a week he was going normally. The Vet had wanted to operate. But he told me they usually come back and my dog was getting pretty old so I tried this first. EDTA removes excess calcium from places it shouldn't be, like in the UT. It will also remove heavy metals , like the mercury preservative they put in the vaccines. There are a lot of natural herbs that would be good for her, like parsley or Chianca piedra they call this one the "stone breaker", it's an amazon tree, that is safe for dogs. They usually have an infection along with the stones. Please for your sake, and your little one, do some research online on her issues and you might find you can make life much better for her (and you)very quickly.Another thing that I am giving my babies, and it's really helped there itching, and urinary tract issues is Total's enzymes and probiotics. They repair the damage done to the helpful life in their bellys by the antibiotics. Yogurt is suggested as a good thing to eat for UTI problems ,and yeast infections, which occur fairly commonly after taking an antibiotic.I am also giving mine chicken livers, and gizzards, because they are loaded with vitamins and they love them! They get one half of a liver and one gizzard every morning and night. It really seems to help them.I keep track of possible infections by using urine ph strips that also test for, blood in the urine etc.it has 10 different diagnostics,it is a great help to me.These things have all tremendously helped my dogs. I really hope your baby gets well soon!
my dog has bleeding from its urine part from 2 days vet told dat it has some prob wid its tail wat to do plzzzzzz suggest.............

Hello I just can not express the anxiety I am feeling right now, its almost midnight here in Massachusetts and my VET is closed till tomorrow morning, my 1 1/2 yr old female Japanese Chin Daisy had been having some bile vomit like once a day for like 4 days, I would make her a bland diet, but then her stool got soft and sometimes even with diarrhea, we just noticed tonight she has been urinating frequently with light blood mixed in, she's been her normal self, BUT I have had some traumatizing experience with it comes to Daisy, last March of 2010 she was having bile vomiting, diarrhea, and dark almost burgundy colored urine, I rushed her to the VET and blood work & xray were done & it was determined she had swallowed 2 pennies which were killing all her red blood cells, Daisy was gravely ill and was going to die, now this little girl means the world to me, people, friends, family & co-workers tell me I am crazy, because I would give my life for hers, the joy she has brought me after going through a miscarriage words can not describe, I LOVE HER! I knew something was seriously wrong back in 2010 & I spent $3,337.00 she needed the pennies removed emergency blood transfusion for 2 days, antibiotics & fluids to get her hydrated, shes a trooper she bounced back 100% 3 weeks go by & my other female Japanese Chin gets into my Migraine medication goes crazy while I am feeding my Daisy shredded boiled chicken I had made for her & viciously out of no where attacks my Daisy & my poor little angel looses her right eye. it was so traumatizing, it happened in front of myself and my kids the pain & screams Daisy made were heart wrenching!I had to pay another $1,000 to have her eye removed due to the nerve damage, she once again bounced back like the trooper she is, she is absolutely adorable! I PRAY to God that she has not gotten into anything and its something minor, due to I am financially struggling like every hard working America, but I can't allow my sweet Daisy to be in pain or in danger, she's playing, eating normal I just cant figure out what is going on, does anyone know why light blood would be in her urine? this just started today & she was fixed months ago so she's not in heat! please pray for my Daisy I would die without her :(
Sincerely,
Eve
My 7yr old dachshund is peeing blood..she seems fine except for that. It happened a few months ago and she was on 3weeks of antibiotic and vitamins. I did everything the vet said but why does she keep bleeding????????? :(
Try 2 tablespoons of raw, unfiltered apple cider vinegar with 1/4 cup of organic yogurt for urinary infections. You can also buy fishmox amoxicillin tablets at the pet store. They are recommended at 10mg for every 10 lbs of weight and come in 250 mg pills. Good Luck. (Many people have saved their dogs and thier money)
I have a 3month old puppy. He has been peing blood for 3 weeks. We have done blood test that showed only high white blood cells and he has been on antibiotic for 2 weeks and today he peed blood again. We seen to think that it might be related to excercise. We went outside and played and a few minutes lates her peed once (pee with blood).. and 2 more time a bit darker but still not pure blood. My vet also a few days ago extracted some pee directly from his bladder and it came back negative for infection. She still wants him to finish his 5 more days of meds before doing more test but now i feel that he need somethine done soon. He asks completly normal, full of energy but pee's frequently. Yesterday he just went outside twice but today we went together and with our other dog and they ran and played together so i'm guessing it's related to the excercise. He's still playing and does not show sign of pain but please if someone can help me please do. (sorry for the spelling erros i'm french). This blog is great and i would appreciate any help or advise.
also this is the 2nd vet we go to so changing vets is no longer an option. She's great but it's very allarming when you're puppy pee's blood.
i checked it out. He pee's alot but does not drip. yesterday he had an xray done and it cam eback negative. He also have lyme test done and negative and antoher blood test that where waiting for result. Second blood test. I will definately let my vet know if this since it's a possibility. and thank you for you're response. poor little guy, test and more test and nothing pointing us in any direction.
he's not longer on antibiotic since clearly that did nto change anything. He has not pee's blood for 5 days. he does pee often but does not drip.. he just pee's. He does eat can food (suggested by the vet) and lots of water which i think is why he pees avery hour. He pees on the peepad to check if it's bloody .. but often right beside . about 2-3 pees every 2 hours. it;s alot but he drinks every hour. Again told by our vet.
he's still not in pain, running around and playing like any puppy. Which make this waiting a lot easier but we hope to have results soon since blood in urine is definately not normal and he's not a complainer so it might hurt but if it does he definately shows no sign of it.
thank you again i appreciate it.
My 14 year old male yorkie just started to have little accidents in the house. he peed on the kitchen floor and when he walked away he dripped pink tinged urine on the floor. he does'nt seem to be in any pain, however he is squatting to pee insetead of lifting his leg like normal. I also have a 2 year old male husky who whines and is constantly sniffing my yorkies under belly. any suggestions? i cant get to the vet till tomorrow and even then i really cant afford to have a bunch of test done. :(

Hi!
Just want to ask why my dog is urinating small little blood clot?
It usually comes today and gone tomorrow.
And it always appear when she's urinating for the second time (she usually urine quite a lot for the first time)
Thank you !
Never EVER go to Banfield inside Petsmart!!! They will have you paying astronomical amounts of money.....very little experienced. Nice, unfortunately will leave you in debt and brokenhearted!
My dog has urinated blood on several occassions. It really is disturbing when you see it! It goes away and occasionally returns for no apparent reason. I just found out yesterday, while looking for dog food recipes that onions are very toxic to dogs and other dog owners stated that there dog peed blood after eating onions in human food. It makes since because the last time my dog peed blood he had eaten some chili I made with lots of onion. I think I finally found the solution now that I think back. The onion causes a type of anemia "hemostylic" something like that. It causes the red blood cells to burst and therefore turn the urine dark. Hope this helps and had never heard of this and want to let as many people know as possible.
hi, doctor i have a pug male and he is 1 year old but he has birth with one ball so is that will be problem for him in future.

Hello,
I have a 2yr old neuturted terrier mix. He had a dental cleaning and one extraction 4 days ago. Today I noticed blood in his urine. His pre-op blood work was all normal and he is on amoxicillin and a medicine for urine spasms. I called the clinic and was told this was normal. Is this normal and why? Or should I consult another vet?
Thank you for any feed back
Hi,
Is it common for a dog (going to be 2 years old) to pee and poo after 12hours a day? Will they suffer from any illness from this behaviour? Also how can I train them to pee and poo at home?
He likes to pee and poo outside the house. We can only walk him before and after work which is at around 12 hours interval or even longer sometimes. We got him when he is around 9 month old. He is with us for around 7 month now. We try to toilet train him at home first but failed in using his pee tray then we try outside during walk and he likes it. I am a first time owner too. Please help!
But is it possible to ask the dog to do it at home beside outside? These few days i try to ask him to pee and poo on certain place during our walk but if he don't feel like it he won't pee and poo. Hi! My 18mo yorkie just had her 2nd heat cycle. Its been a little over 3weeks. She tied up with my neighbors dog while on a walk with me a couple days ago. Today, I noticed some blood mixed in her pee on the pad, with several drops on and around the pad. Im thinking its just the end of her cycle. She still eats & drinks normally and plays even while on our normal walk.I will be taking her into the vet in a month to see if she is preggers. Her cycle started on march 19th & she mated once on April 10th. Any help would be appreciated. avoid 1 that bill then that would be great. Thanks!
And before I am told that I shouldnt have let her tie up, my neighbors dog is a chi & we already talked abt breeding them on her next cycle. It wasn't done purposely this time, but they had their own agenda. LoL
My dog started bleeding with urine I don't know why? Please somebody help.
